Japanese animation studio Gonzo\'s adaptation of Alexandre Dumas\'s novel The Count of Monte Cristo transplants the classic tale of betrayal and vengence to the far future. A chance encounter with the incredibly wealthy Count of Monte Cristo at the Lunar Carnival (Think Rio de Jainero, not a sideshow) plunges young Albert de Morcerf of Paris into a nightmare of revenge for deeds done a generation ago. His family and friends are inexorably pulled into the Count\'s web of charm and secrecy.

This adaptation departs greatly from the original novel, but it does so in a way that creates a new tale, a good one.
