Bitter Irony
by Grey Fox
written 2-10-2002

Oh what bitter irony it was
That both your life
And the lives of your saviors
Were destroyed by them.

And what bitter irony
That your rescuers took you in.
Raised you.
Trained you.
Empowered you.
So that you could fight
Those who destroyed your world and theirs.
That those who they left as survivors
Would work together to forge the warrior
That would one day rise against them.

What bitter irony that was.
You hunted and killed them
And were piad for it.

And what amusing irony
That the only one tough enough for the job,
Man enough for the job,
Was thought to be a man,
But was actually
A woman.

What bitter irony
When they made their diabolical move
You had to go and stop them.
Back to where they decimated
The lives of your benefactors.
There, in those ruins,
You confronted them.
Defeated them.
Left them for dead.
Aided by the relics of the race
They tried to genocide.

And what painful irony
That it wasn't over yet.
You would have to go
And make sure it never
Would happen again.

Did it surprise you
To find the same relics
On that other world where they lived?

And when the last one sensed you,
Clung to you,
Thought you its mother,
What was going on,
In your head,
In your heart?
You were going to kill it,
But you did not.
Why?
Did it strike a chord in your heart?
Or did it remind you perhaps,
Of when your rescuers found you?
Did you feel guilty,
Seeing yourself like the ones who
Pillaged your world?
Did you sense bitter irony,
That you took up the role
Of the pillager?

You took the last one,
Thinking it was now over.
But the bitterest irony of all,
It was not over.

They came back.
The scourge who ravaged your world.
They took the last of the race
And left you alone
With your frustration
And your rage.
You went after them.
Did you simply want to end it?
Or was it something more?

You defeated the underlings,
And confronted her.
A most bitter battle
Was now fought.
Almost defeated were you
Until it came to save you.
What bitter irony
That the last of such a danger
And the one you came to rescue
Now came to your rescue
Revitalizing you.
Giving its life
For you.

And with the power bestowed to you
You won the final battle
Avenging the loss
Of the closest thing you had
To a child of your own.
What bitter irony it was
That the last of a race you helped destroy
Would come to mean so much to you.

And what bitter irony it is now,
That the race you helped to destroy
Is now
A part
Of you.......

Thanks for reading. This was just something I wanted to do for a while; a free-verse poem reflecting
on the life of Samus Aran. For the details of her past, I used what was told in that old Nintendo Power
comic. I figured it's the real deal, since I saw in a Super Smash Bros. Melee FAQ, for the descriptions
of the trophies, for the Sam trophy, they describe her past just like they did in that comic. And yeah,
for the very end of this poem, I drew from the E3 2001 teaser movie of Metroid IV.
