She's never pulled anybody from a burning building
She's never rocked Central Park to a half a million fans
Screaming out her name
She's never hit a shot to win the game

She's never left her foot prints on the moon
She's never made a solo hot air balloon ride
Around the world
No she's just your everyday average girl

“Mommy, lookit me!”

Mrs. Higurashi glanced up from where she was playing “Patty-Cake” with her 9-month-old son, Souta. She smiled at her four-year-old daughter, Kagome. Kagome had been showing off how she could now “pump” her legs on the swing. She had refused to be pushed all afternoon wanting to show off her skill by going higher and higher without any help. Now though, a flicker of worry crossed Mrs. Higurashi's face. Kagome was much too high for her comfort.

“Kagome, be careful!”she called.

“Why don't you come have your snack now?” she suggested, hoping to deter her from any more unsafe activity.

“I brought your favorite!”

Kagome's face lit up. But she had one more trick to show her mother before she got off. Hands tightening on the chains, she pulled herself up into a standing position, precariously balancing on the swing as it swung back and forth. Mrs. Higurashi gasped.

“Kagome!” she called anxiously, “Get down from there!”

Kagome giggled and gave her mother an impish grin- and complied. Mrs. Higurashi's heart skipped about five beats when her daughter leapt from the swing- and cried out in pain when she hit the merciless blacktop on her hands and knees.

Mrs. Higurashi left Souta sitting on the bench and ran frantically to Kagome who was now sobbing piteously and holding her knee.

But she's somebody's hero

She knelled beside Kagome and gently removed her hands from her knee. It actually wasn't that bad.

“Shhhhhhh. It's okay.” She soothed.

She pressed her lips to the hurt knee.

“There all better.”

Kagome's cries became hiccups as Mrs. Higurashi wiped the tears from her eyes.

“Mommy?”

“Hmm?”

“Can I have my snack now?”

“Of course dear.”

“Cheerios, right?”

“Mmmhhmm.”

“Yayy!!!” Kagome screeched, her pain apparently forgotten.

Later that evening, Mrs. Higurashi put Souta to bed and then went to Kagome's room to tuck her in. Kagome was sitting up in bed with a worn book in her hands.

“You want me to read that story again?” Mrs. Higurashi asked, feigning surprise, for that was the same story Kagome always wanted her to read.

Giggling, Kagome said, “Of course Mommy! It's my favorite!”

“Okay, if you're sure.” She said as she took the book.
Kagome smiled and her brown eyes lit up as her mother began to read.
