Disclaimer: I do NOT own Inuyasha or the characters in this story they belong to Yomiuri TV/Sunrise and Rumiko Takahashi.
Inuyasha and Kagome were just staring at each other, eyes fixed on one another, the breeze flowing through their hair. Kagome just couldn’t come to tell him that final goodbye. The leaves were rustling and the branches of the Sacred Tree bending. This was where they first met, where she awakened him from his slumber that was supposed to be eternal.
Finally Kagome decided that she should break the silence so she started, “Inuyasha..” but she was silenced.
Inuyasha had launched himself at her hugging her as though he would never let go. Neither of them could remember the last time they hugged like this, after he had to send her home because he thought his world was too dangerous for her. The dam that was holding back the tears was finally released as she said that painful word that she thought she would never have to tell him, “goodbye…”
At that time she started to feel a wetness form at her shoulder where his head was laying. Is…is he crying? She thought he would never cry for her like she did him. She then took her hands and brought his face up so that she could see his eyes. Sure enough, those gorgeous amber orbs had more tears that were threatening to fall. The sight only made her cry more. But she didn’t look away and just let her tears fall. She then took her thumb and wiped away a tear that was falling down his cheek.
“Inuyasha…I…” a clawed finger was placed upon her lips so that she couldn’t say those next two words.
“Never forget me?” he said as more of a question than a command.
She couldn’t come up with any words so she launched herself at him, pressing her lips against his. He didn’t push her away, but actually kissed her back. This kiss was more passionate than they had at the fight with Kaguya. It was a peck-type kiss but with more passion added.
Kagome didn’t want it to end but she knew it had to. After they broke apart the only word that she could say to him was, “never…”
He took her into another hug. And just stared at the Sacred Tree that was behind her. Kagome was tying to figure out what he was staring at and turned him loose and looked at him. She then turned her head enough to see what he was staring at. Kagome turned her head back around to look into his eyes that were still locked onto the tree.
Inuyasha was brought to the here and now upon hearing Kagome’s voice, “This is where it all began…” with that said she tugged on the rosary and his eyes flew open, “and this is where it will end.” That last statement made his heart ache.
She started to walk away back to the well when she was halted by him taking the rosary out of her hands. She turned around to find him putting it back on, around his neck.
“Inuyasha…what…what are you doing? You…you don’t need them anymore.” Kagome was shocked that she could even able to form words, she too baffled that he put the rosary that he hated so much back around his neck. He disliked it so much because his face could be slammed into the ground with one little word, but he was not willing to part with it.
“Please don’t take it, I want…something to remember you by, and this is the one thing of yours that I know nobody will be able to take away from me.”
She started to cry again so Inuyasha just took his hand and cupped her face with it and wiped a straying tear away.
“But…what will I have to remember you by?”
“Look behind you…” Inuyasha turned her around in his arms as he continued, “The Sacred Tree, it will remind you of me. There is a spot that has no bark, that is the spot that I was sealed to. And I know it will last. Whenever you miss me just look to the tree and look to that spot.” With that she turned around to look at him once again. Her eyes were gleaming with tears.
“Never forget me?” she finally got the nerve to ask him his question.
He took her in another hug and whispered in her ear, “never…”
She looked at him one last time and said those two words that she thought she would never have to put together, “Goodbye…Inuyasha…” a single tear ran down her cheek.
He regretted saying his next two words, “Goodbye…Kagome…”
She ran to the well as soon as he said her name. She didn’t want to get caught up in another hug, she figured the sooner she got it over with the better. The smell of her tears still clung to his nose and his clothes. He hated to see her go but figured it would be for the best. She didn’t belong here in his world, she was from a different time.
Before she knew it she was at the bone eater’s well. She sat one the edge of it with her feet dangling to the darkness below. This was the only thing that kept her going between both of her homes, this and Inuyasha. She suddenly felt Kikyo’s aura and said quietly to herself, “I hope you two are happy together.” a single tear fell to the grassy ground and she turned to look into the darkness once more and jumped.
Once on the other side she just looked up and saw the ceiling of the well house and sighed heavily. Once she calmed herself down to go into the house she grabbed the ladder and started to climb her way out. She landed with two feet on the ground and pulled the ladder out of the well. She opened the doors and slowly walked thru. Once she was outside she took in a deep breath and turned back around to shut the doors looking at the well the entire time. Slowly she started her journey to the house but stopped for some reason. Suddenly she looked towards the Sacred Tree and said at a whisper, “I love you, Inuyasha.” She reached the door of the house and took her shoes off and set her empty pack down to go into the kitchen.
“Hi everyone, I’m home” And this time, for good. she thought to herself.
She nearly made him jump out of his skin, a sight you rarely got from him. Still taking in all that happened with him and Kagome, he just simply replied with a soft “Yeah.”
Kikyo gave him the jewel. She knew that since he was doing this for her that the jewel would not be tainted. He made his wish out loud and the jewel started to glow.
“Do you think Kagome made the right choice to let Inuyasha make Kikyo alive again with the Sacred Jewel?”
Kaede, Sango, and Miroku just looked at each other as if to say ‘no’. The young fox demon wanted an answer for he knew how much of a baka Inuyasha was at sometimes.
“Kagome loved him, so she let him go.” Miroku said quietly hoping that the half-demon wasn’t outside listening to the conversation.
“What do you mean?”
“He means, Shippo, that Kagome loved Inuyasha enough to let him do what he thought was right. Even if it meant that she had to leave him.” Sango replied. For it was true.
“Well if she loved him why didn’t she stay?”
The three adult’s looked at each other and Miroku said one word that he dare not say in front of Kagome, “Kikyo.”
That stopped Shippo’s tirade of questions. He knew how hurt she got after seeing Inuyasha and Kikyo together. After a while of thinking he figured that it would hurt her even worse to see the two together forever rather that just the times he would run after her.
“Don’t get too carried away. I wanted to see if the jewel had granted your wish.”
His eyes sprang open, “ Ki…Kikyo, you mean I was a test to see if you were really alive.”
“Yes, Inuyasha, I can never love you. You are a half-demon and I am a priestess. The only way we could be together would be if your demon side was purified…”
“You mean to tell me that you only loved me as a human. You would have taken away my demon side. You would never have loved me as I am?” He said that last part with a disgusted tone in his voice because he knew that her reincarnation told him he loved him as a half-demon and never wanted to take his demon side away, because she knew how much he hated being human.
“No, Inuyasha. A priestess and a half-demon can never be.” she said that as to mean that even he and Kagome would never had worked out.
“You’re wrong!” he practically yelled in her face.
She was shocked that he would argue with her and accuse her of being wrong. “Oh, I am, am I?”
“Yes, because YOUR reincarnation once told me that she loved me as a half-demon, that she knew how much I HATED being human! She would never have changed me just so that she could be with me. She loved me as I am.”
“Then why is it, that you are here with me?”
He opened his mouth but nothing came out. He didn’t know what to say. She was right though, why was he here with her? As soon as he came to his senses, he shut his mouth and started to walk back to the village, to Kaede’s. Kikyo didn’t do anything about and went on her own way. Inuyasha didn’t even turn his head around to look at Kikyo , but he wanted to make sure that she left. And was relieved to feel her aura start to disappear.
Kagome…Kagome I’m so sorry I made the wrong choice. I’m sorry that I didn’t say this sooner…but…it was you that I was in love with. It was true that he loved Kikyo but he was never in love with her, not like he was with her. He figured out what that saying that Kagome was always telling him, ‘You never know what you have until it’s gone’. He now realized how much he loved her. But, unfortunately, it was too late, the well was already sealed up and he can‘t get back to her.
“Hey sis! Where’s Inuyasha?”
She was silent. She didn’t know how to break it to Sota that he would never be able to see his hero again. Then she finally realized, she would never see him again. Her eyes started to tear up at the thought.
“Kagome, what’s the matter dear?” Mama Higurashi was getting worried. Did something happen to Inuyasha? She practically treated him like a second son. She had heard the stories that Kagome had told her about his life as living hell, so it was only natural for her to be worried about him.
“Did something happen to him?” Sota was now a bit worried seeing the sudden build up of tears at the mention of his name.
“No, nothing happened to him.”
Kagome started on the story of how they defeated Naraku and making the jewel whole again. And when grandpa asked about it being purified Sota had to get some tissues. She told them that the jewel would be purified by bringing Kikyo back to life and that Inuyasha would be staying with her.
Well, everyone was sad to hear that he chose Kikyo. Well…everyone but grandpa, he was happy that his only granddaughter wouldn’t be around that half-dog demon boy anymore.
“I’m so sorry honey.” Mama took her sobbing daughter in her arms. She knew how much her daughter was hurting.
“It’s o.k. mama. I’m the one who let him make the decision.”
“And you showed more heart and love to Inuyasha to let him choose on his own.” Mama said as she turned her loose.
“Thanks mama. I think I’m just gonna go up to take a bath and go to bed. Tomorrow’s a school day and I want to be well rested.”
Mama looked at Kagome and nodded and watched her daughter walk up the stairs.

She ran as fast as she could to the well she didn’t want to stay another second in this time it was just too painful. She had already said her goodbye’s to the others it hurt her bad enough to tell Shippo. He wailed the entire time she was telling them goodbye. It even hurt her to tell Sango goodbye, she was practically a sister to her. The person she knew would hurt her the most to say goodbye to was the stubborn half-dog demon that she has come to love so much. She wanted to tell him in private and he knew he wanted to too. Before she knew it she was at the bone eater’s well. She sat one the edge of it with her feet dangling to the darkness below. Back in Kaede’s hut it was silent. Shippo was coloring with his crayons because he would cherish the drawings that he would make with them. Sango was petting a sulking Kirara in her lap. Even though she was a firecat demon and could not speak she still felt the same as the others. Miroku and Kaede just sat and watched the fire flicker. Not saying one word until Shippo had enough of it.“Do you think Kagome made the right choice to let Inuyasha make Kikyo alive again with the Sacred Jewel?”
Kaede, Sango, and Miroku just looked at each other as if to say ‘no’. The young fox demon wanted an answer for he knew how much of a baka Inuyasha was at sometimes.

The Jewel of four Souls was activated and started to leave Inuyasha’s hands and float to the sky above, along with Kikyo. Suddenly the sky was filled with a bright light and then vanished. The jewel was finally purified. Kikyo was still in the sky and started to drift back to the ground. Inuyasha never took his eyes off her. When her feet finally touched the ground the glow around her started to dissipate. Inuyasha ran to her and hugged her tightly. He suddenly felt her push away only to pulled back into a kiss. As soon as he tried to grant access to her mouth with his tongue he felt a sharp pain cut thru his neck. He put his hand to his now bleeding neck, he knew it wasn’t fatal but it still hurt. Kikyo had pulled out her little pocket knife and cut him along his neck.“Don’t get too carried away. I wanted to see if the jewel had granted your wish.”
His eyes sprang open, “ Ki…Kikyo, you mean I was a test to see if you were really alive.”

“Hello, Kagome. How are you dear?” Mama Higurashi said before she took another bite of her rice. Kagome arrived home just in time for dinner.“Hey sis! Where’s Inuyasha?”

It was silent in Kaede’s hut. All of them off to themselves until they were brought to the here and now when the mat hanging from the door way was thrown to the side and a red and white blur came rushing in.
