Chapter 23
A/N: For better or worse, I managed to jump start my muse and this is what she gave me.
You Know What I'm Saying Baby…I'm Sorry Kagome
The empty school hall echoed with their footsteps. Kagome and InuYasha made their way to the huge board with a list of all the student's names and scores. Her heart thumping with anxiety, she scanned it for her name. She held her breath when she found them. Passed…Passed…Passed…Passed…Passed…Failed. Kagome staggered back, deeply disappointed despite the fact that she had not been very confident anyway. InuYasha put an arm out and caught her.
“I'm guessing your scores weren't good,” he said.
Kagome turned her head and buried it in his shoulder.
“I failed my last exam,” was her muffled reply.
A wave of guilt hit him, and he took her in his arms and held her tight.
“I'm sorry Kagome.” He whispered. “Is there anything that can be done about it?”
She pulled slightly away from him so she could wipe away the tears from her eyes.
“I can see if there is a make up exam” she said, “but if I can't take it and pass before the day of graduation, I won't be allowed to attend the ceremonies.”
“So let's go see if they will let you take this make up exam.”
Kagome gave him a wan smile and nodded her head.
InuYasha waited while Kagome was in the school office. He fidgeted anxiously, wondering if everything would be all right, and pissed that this might interfere with their return. Gods, I really messed things up this time, he thought morosely. I can't believe she didn't get angry with me. If it weren't for me and the god damned youkai rut, I know she would've passed. He clenched his fists and smacked them up against the wall he was leaning on. I really am sick and tired of Tokyo, he thought wearily, but I can't go back with out her.
Kagome finally came out of the office and gave him a reassuring smile.
“I can take a make up exam,” she said, “they made an exception for me because I've been sick through most of high school but always took my tests.”
She shook her head and gave a short, rueful laugh.
“Hard to believe, but all those maladies my grandfather made up to cover my absences made them take pity on me.”
“So, when will you take this exam?”
“In five days.” She replied. “Why the glum look?”
“Does this mean we are not going back?” He said, not able to keep the disappointment from his face.
Kagome took his hand and squeezed it.
“We can go back,” she said, “I think the others are probably running out of the snacks and other stuff I left behind.”
“Hmph,” said InuYasha, with a one- sided smirk.
“But no shard hunting,” she said, “and you are just going to have to wait to kill Naraku until after I graduate.”
They started to walk out of the school.
“Fine,” he said, “but there's one thing we never discussed. When you are finished with school, then what?”
“You mean what I will do?” she replied.
“Yeah.”
“I guess that really depends on you,” she said seriously, “you still have yet to define what our relationship is to be, in the feudal era.”
InuYasha couldn't answer. He was taken aback because he knew she was right. So instead he just nodded and pulled her over to him so he could put his arm around her as they walked.
“I understand.” He said. “You deserve that.”
But he was unable to tell her what was to become of their relationship yet.
It was all a muddle in his mind, and he couldn't make sense of his thoughts and feelings when it came to them.
Kagome knew better than to say anything else. He had told her he loved her, and that was more than she had ever hoped to have from him. She only hoped he would figure things out, with time.
Soon they had walked back to the shrine. They briefly stopped in to see her grandfather at the gift store. He had Sota working there, putting out merchandise. The old man said it was to keep him out of trouble. Kagome and InuYasha gave each other meaningful looks. Grandpa didn't know the half of all the trouble Sota had recently got into.
When they got to the house, her mother was home, and Kagome had to tell her about the failed exam and the make up she had scheduled. Her mother listened, and assured her that she believed she would pass it and get to graduate with her friends.
“Kagome,” she said, “I have something to show you.”
Her mother held out a copy of the Japan Times to her, open to page five.
The headline read, “Mysterious Young Couple Sets Harajuku on Fire With Lust.”
Kagomes jaw dropped and her face turned bright red.
“What is it Kagome?” said InuYasha, looking over her shoulder curiously.
“You don't want to know,” she said, her voice low and a little shaky as she began to read the article.
It said; Last night in Tokyo's Harajuku district, a mysterious young and beautiful couple had Club Zero buzzing with their antics. This couple was so passionately attracted to one another, that it is said they commandeered an elevator to pursue their lust for one another. Later they were reportedly on the dance floor, where the young women danced so provocatively for her partner he picked her up and carried her out of the club. We interviewed some young people that were there and this is what they had to say.
“They were so beautiful, it made my heart race just to watch them.” Said Yuri Hamamoko.
“Yes, and you should have seen the guy, he was to die for. All that long silver hair and those golden eyes, he made me swoon!” said Michiko Yamamoto.
“I saw them in the elevator” said Shinji Watanabe, “I couldn't believe my eyes. I had to have many cups of cold water after witnessing them together.”
No one could say who the mysterious young lovers were. But the club goers in Harajuku will not be forgetting them soon. - by Kaoru Yamagata.
Kagome groaned and hung her head in mortification.
InuYasha was growing more and more impatient to find out what she was reading.
“Kagome, tell me what's going on!” he growled in annoyance.
She put the paper down and looked at him speechless, and then turned to her mother
“Mom…did you…read this?”
“Yes,” her mother replied.
“I mean…the whole thing?” she said, her last words ending in a squeak.
“Yes, the whole thing.” She said, “And I surmised they might be talking about you and InuYasha.”
“Ohhhhh…” Kagome fell down backwards and InuYasha had to catch her before she hit the floor.
“Will someone please tell me what's going on?” he growled testily.
“This article is about two mysterious lovers in Club Zero in Harajuku last night,” said Kagomes mother, “I guess it was my own fault, sending you out there looking like that InuYasha. Tokyo is just not ready to handle a man as beautiful and sexy as you.”
InuYasha looked shocked. He paled and his mouth fell open, then he shut it quickly and turned as red as Kagome. With a thump he sat on the floor, Kagome in his lap.
“Don't worry,” said Mrs. Higurashi, “your dad and I did some crazy things too when we were dating.”
“Kagome, I want to go home,” said InuYasha weakly, “Can we please leave now?”
