Chapter 1
Disaster

Count D placed the tea tray on the table and took a seat on the couch opposite the blond headed LAPD detective.

“So…uh…” Leon cast about for something to say. He had no idea why but over the past few weeks he had become increasingly uncomfortable around the pet shop owner. “How's Chris?” he finally finished lamely.

“Fine, I believe he's playing with Pon-chan and T-chan,” D replied with one of his unnerving smiles. Not knowing what else to say, Leon took a sip of his tea and remained silent. The pet shop had always had an…odd feel to it, but he had never been this unnerved simply by being here. What was causing this?

The front door's bell twinkled and D looked up to greet his new customer. He had half-risen from the couch when he froze, eyes wide and polite smile frozen in place. Leon looked up and nearly choked on his tea. He had never seen a man like this one before. He was wearing a flowing cheongsam much like D's but it had layer upon layer of fabric and trailed almost out the door behind him. He didn't really look Chinese, or any nationality for that matter. A look of pure hatred shone in his black, pupil-less eyes.

“Count D,” his voice was dark and rumbling, almost like an earthquake personified. “You will pay for your deceit.” He raised an arm and for the first time Leon noticed a long staff with the head of serpent on top. He pointed it threateningly towards D.

“Hey Count!

It was at that exact moment that Chris came running into the room to ask some question or other. He was practically in front of the couch before he even noticed the man at the front entrance. The serpent's eyes glowed ruby and a bright light filled the room. Chris was directly in the line of fire.

“CHRIS!” Leon found himself screaming in sync with D just before a blinding flash of light made him cry out in pain and cover his eyes.

“Chris! Chris!” Leon must have been temporarily knocked out because he found himself regaining consciousness to the sound of D's frightened cries. D? Frightened? Leon shot up as his brain slowly processed that horrifying thought. He glanced at the door and found the strange man gone. Scrambling to his feat, Leon saw D crouched on the floor over Chris looking panicked.

“Chris!” He stumbled over and collapsed to his knees beside the Count. “What the hell happened?” He demanded. He turned to glare at D but stopped. D's normally pale skin had taken on a sickly pallor and he looked downright scared.

“I—I don't know,” D said shakily, looking up at Leon. Then his mismatched gaze fell on Chris's prone form once more and he said almost to himself, “That spell was not meant to be used on humans.” Leon reached out and grabbed the front of D's robes.

“Damn it, D! If you know so much about it, then do something!” He shook hard in frustration. D's hands came up to cover Leon's and, suddenly embarrassed, the detective stopped shaking. They stared at each other for a long moment.

“Detective,” D whispered finally, “would you please let go of me?” Slightly startled, Leon hastily let go. D slowly got up, his normal grace completely gone. Leon could have sworn he was shaking slightly.

“I know someone who may be able to help us,” D said quietly, straining to retain some semblance of calm. “Could you…pick up Chris, please?” It sounded as though it hurt D just to say it. Leon carefully gathered his brother into his arms. D gazed at Chris for a moment and then turned and started towards the back of the shop. Not knowing what else to do, Leon followed.

They passed down a long corridor that seemed to never end. Leon glanced at the hundreds of doors all around them and couldn't help but notice how ominously quiet it had become. He couldn't hear any animals at all. No squawks or barks or meows. Not even the scurry of small feet or the flap of a bird's wings. There was nothing.

D stopped before a door. This one was different from the others. Leon couldn't say why. Physically it looked the same. But it felt different.

“Ms. Yuko, please,” D spoke to the door. Leon blinked but didn't question it. He had learned not to question many things that D did. D looked back at Chris once more and then at Leon. He hesitated for a moment, then reached out and opened the door. A bright light prevented Leon from seeing what was beyond the door and at the last second he wondered whether he should trust D. Then he followed the Count through the doorway.

“Naruto!” Sakura called as her teammate was thrown back into a tree. Sasuke already lay prone on the ground and she herself was wounded as well.

Kakashi glanced back at the children in his team as he battled the ninja before them. They had been lied to again. This mission had been classified as D but it was most definitely an A class challenge. There were too many for him to fight on his own and at any rate if the kids stayed they would be killed.

“Sakura,” he called. “Get Sasuke and both of you get to Naruto.” His only option was to send them away. He did not have enough Chakra left to send them back to the village. However, if it was done correctly, he might have enough for a trans-dimensional portal. The space-time witch was the safest place to send them. She was neutral ground. They'd be safe there.

He didn't have time to wait for Sakura. He'd have to summon the portal and hope she got there with Sasuke in time. He clasped his hands together and began to work the signs, moving as fast as he could.

Isou Ninjutsu!” (Ninja art of Transportation)

A hole of blackness opened under Naruto's motionless form. Sakura had slung Sasuke's arm over her shoulder and was half-dragging him to the portal. Naruto slowly blinked and turned his head.

“Sakura? Sasuke?” he whispered as the fuzzy edges of his vision began to clear. He was slowly aware that he was sinking and looked to find himself being swallowed by a pool of nothingness beneath him. Crying out, he tried to struggle away but found he couldn't move. The blackness had a hold of him and he couldn't break free. He looked up again to watch as the ground in front of Sakura and Sasuke exploded.

“Sakura! Sasuke!” he screamed, struggling to break free. “Let. Me. Go!” he yelled at the blankness, desperate to get away. He was sinking faster now. “No! Let go!” The blackness was up to his neck. He couldn't move. He couldn't get away. “Sakura!” He was completely submerged in darkness and the small opening of light above him was closing. “Sasuke!” The light disappeared and he felt himself falling.

“It worked, Brother, it worked!” Al cried excitedly.

“Yeah, Al,” Ed sighed. “It did.” He couldn't keep a smile from his face as he gazed at the gate they had summoned. It wasn't the gate, but it was a gate. A gate that lead to Risenbol, to Winry, and most importantly, to home. Personally, he had been content to stay in this world, but Al had become obsessed with finding a way back. Now that they had done it, Ed was glad they had.

“Well,” Al broke Ed from his thoughts, “shall we go, brother?” He took a step towards the gate but a hand on his arm stopped him. “Brother?”

“You stay here Al,” Ed said quietly.

“What?” Al demanded. “No! Brother—”

“I've already gambled with your life too many times, I won't do it again,” Ed said seriously. His eyes took on a pleading look. “Please, Al? If it's okay, I'll come right back and then we'll go through together. Okay?” Al stared at his brother for a long moment. They had been separated for so long. He didn't like the idea of possibly being separated again. What if Ed couldn't come back? What if the gate didn't lead to home and Ed was trapped, alone, in some strange world. But Ed looked so worried… Well, Al thought, if Ed doesn't come back I can always just go in after him.

“Alright,” Al whispered, hanging his head a little.

“Promise me that if I don't come back you won't go in after me,” Ed said. Al's head shot up and he secretly wondered if his brother had read his mind.

“No, Brother!”
“Al!” Ed suddenly looked much older then he was. “Please. I don't want you to be hurt anymore. I'm asking you, please just stay here until I get back. I will come back Al. Even if something happens and I can't come back right away, I will come back.” Al stared at his brother and then slowly lowered his gaze to stare at the ground.

“Okay, Brother. I promise I won't go through the gate without you.” Al was surprised when arms suddenly wrapped around him and he returned his brother's hug almost desperately.

“Don't worry Al, I'll be careful,” Ed whispered. “I said I'd get your body back and I did. Now I'm telling you I'll be back and you better believe I will.” Ed held onto his little brother for a few more minutes, grateful that it was flesh and bone beneath his touch and not the cold metal of a suit of armor. Slowly he broke away and flashed his brother a smile.

“See ya,” he said cheerfully. Then he turned and walked towards the gate. As he approached the doors they began to move and open. He was relieved when he found only a bight light and not a sea of eyes behind the doors. Turning on last time, he gave Al a thumbs up and then he walked through the gate, the heavy doors closing behind him.

It was raining. The first thing Leon was aware of was the pressure of the drops against his skin. Looking around he saw a traditional looking Japanese house and found himself standing with D in the backyard. A woman in an exotic black dress with long black hair done up in some bizarre ponytail stood before them.

“Ms. Yuko,” D bowed to the woman.

“Why Count D, how lovely to see you again,” the woman replied, although her eyes were on Chris.

“This child's name is Chris, correct?” she asked, approaching Leon.

“Uh…yeah,” Leon stuttered awkwardly. Briefly he wondered if this was a dream but dismissed the idea. He didn't have dreams that were quite this detailed, or about women who were wearing quite that much.

“This child,” Yuko stretched out a hand to gently stroke Chris's wet cheek, “has lost something very important. This something has been scattered among many worlds.” She paused and then looked up at Leon. It was a gaze to rival D's and Leon couldn't help but shiver, subconsciously blaming it on the cold rain pelting him.

“If nothing is done,” Yuko never broke eye-contact with Leon, “this child will die.” Leon felt himself gasp and from the corner of his eye he saw D stiffen beside him.

“You wish to save this child?” Now she turned to D. “He is human, you know.”

“I am aware,” D practically growled, making Leon jump. He had never seen D angry before. Well, not at anyone other then himself anyway.

“There is a price,” Yuko admonished.

“I will pay any price,” D replied coolly. Yuko turned and addressed a boy that Leon had not noticed before. He was dressed in all black (a school uniform?) and had black hair and glasses.

“Watanuki,” she said, “got to the Treasure Room. There is something there I'd like you to bring back.” The boy ran off as asked and they were left alone it the yard with Yuko. Leon was about to open his mouth to say something when Yuko cut him off.

“Ah, they've arrived,” Yuko said quietly. He blinked in surprise, but his unasked question was soon answered. What looked like a black hole opened in the air nearly seven feet above the ground and a boy suddenly fell out onto the wet grass below. He had blond hair and blue eyes and was wearing some sort of orange jumpsuit. A headband on his head displayed a strip of metal with an odd symbol Leon had never seen before carved into it. He was bleeding in several places.

“Sakura! Sasuke!” the boy cried, jumping to his feet. “Where am I? What happened? Where are Sakura and Sasuke?” Yuko held up a hand to stop the constant flow of questions.

“Be calm,” she said soothingly. The boy looked about to yell something back to her when a huge set of doors suddenly appeared to his left. With a cry, the boy fell back. The doors slowly opened and a blinding light made them all turn away. When they looked back, the doors were gone and a new boy stood in the yard. He was no taller then the last one, but he did look older. Long blond hair was braided behind him and golden eyes blinked at his surroundings. He turned to look behind him and cursed.

“Ah crap, the gate's gone!” he cried.

“Welcome,” Yuko said to both the newcomers, both of whom turned to stare at her.

“Who are you, lady?” they both asked in unison.

“I'd like to have your names first, if you don't mind,” she said. The two looked at each other and then the one in the orange jumpsuit stood up.

“I'm Uzumaki Naruto,” he said, pointing to himself, “and I'm gonna be the next Hokage.”

“An admirable goal,” Yuko smiled while everyone else wondered what the hell he was talking about. “And where are you from?”

“I'm the number one ninja from the Village Hidden in the Leaves,” he boasted. Still smiling, Yuko turned to the other boy.

“And you?” she prompted.

“Me?” the boy asked. “I'm Edward Elric. I'm from…uh…Risenbol.”

“Ah, the Fullmetal Alchemist,” Yuko said. “You have quite the reputation for one so young.”

“Not anymore,” Ed whispered while Naruto shot him a glare for the witch's praise.

“And you, Chris's brother?” she turned to Leon.

“Um…well…” he stumbled, wishing she'd stop staring at him. “I'm Leon Orcot. I'm a cop from LA.”

“Now then,” Yuko turned back to the group as a whole and Leon, Ed, and Naruto all wondered simultaneously why she had skipped D. “You have all come here because you each have a wish.”

“A wish?” Naruto asked. “Well, I didn't really come here on purpose or anything, but I guess I'd like to get back home,” he said, thinking of Sakura, Sasuke, and Kakashi.

“To get back to Al,” Ed whispered as he prayed Al kept his promise and didn't go through the gate, if the gate was even still there.

“Chris…” Leon found himself saying. He looked up to find the Count's eyes on him and suddenly had to lower his head again, fighting a blush.

“Hmm…” Yuko said thoughtfully. “Even if each of you offers the most precious things you own, none of you have enough to pay the price for these wishes. However,” she gazed at them all in turn, “perhaps if all four of you paid together…yes, then you'd have enough.”

They all remained silent, just staring.

“In your hearts, all four of your wishes are essentially the same,” She said. Turning to Leon and D she continued, “You wish to travel to many worlds to return the memories of this child.” Next she gazed at Naruto. “You wish to return to your own world with your friends.” Now she looked at Ed. “And you…you wish to return your brother, though you're not sure which world you would rather be in. Perhaps this journey will help you make up your mind,” she added, smiling at him.

“You each have different reasons, but the method is the same. You all wish to travel to different dimensions. You cannot individually make even one of those wishes come true, but if you work together and combine payment you may be able to afford it.”

“You keep mentioning payment,” Leon said suspiciously, “what payment do we owe you?”

“The thing most precious to you,” she said simply. Turning to D she smiled and Leon saw D tense again.

“For you, for example, I'd ask for you lovely shop,” she said. D opened his mouth to say something but stopped. He turned to stare at Chris and Leon knew he was remembering what the witch had said earlier.

“If nothing is done this child will die.”

Clenching his fists, or doing so as best he could with his absurd fingernails, D lowered his gaze and said quietly, “Fine. It's yours.”

Yuko smiled and with a wave of her hand produced a piece of paper and a quill from thin air. She handed them both to the Count and Leon marveled that the paper remained dry and unaffected by the rain. D paused for only a moment before signing the paper (apparently it was stiff enough to write on) and handing it back. Yuko took it and it promptly vanished once more. D stared at the ground and would not lift his gaze.

“From you,” Yuko turned to Naruto and the boy looked almost scared for the first time since being in the yard. “I'm afraid I must ask for your dear Kyuubi.”

Naruto blinked. Was that even possible?

Extending a hand, Yuko curled one long finger toward herself and Naruto cried out and fell to his knees. He felt as though he was being torn in half. He screamed as something red began to pull away from his being. His soul was on fire and his curled his fingers into the wet earth. Then the pain ceased and he wondered for a moment if he had died.

Looking up, he saw the nine-tailed fox thrashing in the air between him and Yuko. As with the paper, Yuko waved her hand and a glass bottle materialized. Removing the cork, she held it towards the fox and in an instant it dissolved into a cloud of red smoke and was drawn into the bottle. When she was finished, she re-corked the bottle and it too disappeared.

Naruto looked around to find everyone staring at him and glanced embarrassedly at the ground. While all eyes were still locked on Naruto, Yuko turned to Ed.

“And you, Fullmetal.”

The boy jumped and looked up, obviously fearing whatever she would ask. He glanced back at Naruto nervously before giving the witch his full attention.

“You have done great things with your powers, but I believe you can do great things without them as well. You must also remember that powers such as yours are nonexistent in many worlds. I say all this because I must ask you for your alchemy, Edward.” Ed gazed at her and then finally inclined his head. So long as he could return to Al as he had promised he would give anything, even his other arm and leg.

Yuko produced a third object from thin air, this time a glass orb. It floated through the air until it was directly before Ed.

“Please clap your hands together and touch the orb,” Yuko instructed. Ed nodded and then slowly raised his hands, aware that this was probably the last time that doing so would have any effect. He then placed his palms, metal and flesh, on the glass. A moment ago he had wondered what could have made Naruto scream so horribly, now he knew. He cried out and struggled to remain standing. He felt as though his alchemic knowledge was being physically ripped from him. The orb glowed red and Ed yelled one final time before his hands came away from the glass and he sank to his knees. The orb floated back to Yuko and disappeared as all the others had.

“And me? What do I have to give?” Leon asked almost fearfully. He couldn't think of anything terribly important, at least not anything that had to be ripped from his body the way the last two payments had been.

“You Leon Orcot, you must perhaps give the hardest payment of anyone.” She turned to look at him and her gaze had turned almost sad. Leon felt himself swallow. “I can send you to other worlds, but finding the child's memories is something you must do on your own. However,” she paused and lowered her gaze to Chris, “as your payment, you will never recover his memories of you. Even if everything else is restored, the relationship between you two will never be the same again.” Leon blinked and wanted to say something, wanted to swear and yell and maybe even draw his gun. But he remained silent, stunned.

“Is this what you wanted?” Watanuki had returned and he had two small creatures in his arms, one black and the other white.

“Yes, thank you,” Yuko smiled, taking the white one from him. She turned back to the group. “This young one is Mokona Modoki. Mokona will lead you through the worlds. This one,” she pointed to the black one, “has the power to communicate with Mokona and so we will keep in touch through them. Mokona can take you to different dimensions, but there is no way to determine which dimensions. For that reason, only fate will decide when your wishes are granted. So, you must remember there are not coincidences in the world, any world. There is only `hitsuzen,' the same thing that brought you all together here.”

Yuko sighed and looked at the group.

“There is still time to take back your payments,” she said quietly. “Once you accept Mokona, it is final.” She looked at them all in turn, lingering longest on Leon. Leon glared right back.

“We're going,” he said. Yuko nodded.

“Very well then,” she whispered. She turned to address them all. “There are many other worlds out there. You can tell just by looking at each other that you each come from very different worlds. People you know may exist in these other worlds, but they have developed under completely different circumstance. You may meet different versions of the same person in world after world, and just because they were nice to you in one world in no indication if the same is true in the next. You'll find worlds where you can't communicate, where common sense is nonexistent. Scientific development, standards of living, laws…they all differ with each world. There are worlds locked in constant wars, worlds of liars, worlds of criminals…and you must make it through them all. It will be a hard journey in that you will never know quite where you are or how close you will be to collecting all of the pieces of this child's fractured memory.

“That said, I will ask you one more time. Are you certain you wish to go through with this?”

“Yes,” all four of them answered as one.

“You are all very sincere and determined. Both traits are necessary to accomplish anything. And so,” she raised the hand holding Mokona and the white creature floated above them, “you may go!”

A set of enormous wings suddenly sprouted from the creature's back and spread, it's new ten-foot wingspan greatly overshadowing the small creature itself. Then it opened its mouth wider then any of them would have thought possible and they were surrounded by wind and found themselves being sucked into the gaping mouth.

Ed and Naruto cried out, even the Count gasped. Leon clung to Chris, remembering Yuko's words as she disappeared and everything around him was lost to the wind.

You will never recover his memories of you. Even if everything else is restored, the relationship between you two will never be the same again.
