Soldier boy
We send you to fight our battles
Your monument is not of marble in our capital
It is the rifle jammed in the ground with a bloody helmet over the stock
Shinning tags hang
It lies on a far shore
In a dark lonely jungle
A forgotten field so far away

Rifle in your hand pistol at waist
You march away
Never knowing if you'll live another day
To some it seems a waste
To you a few inches is enough to lay down your life
To you the price of freedom is not a waste
You pay the price for those who'll never know your name

Your tribute is the blood you spill for your country
Your monument lies in a far off land
Your song is that of the battle that claimed your life
You march away
Throw your humanity away
Your life away
To take on more hill

For the cause you lay yourself at the mercy of the soulless tools of murder
To the mercy of the machine gun and the mine
To the mercy of the bayonet
To the mercy of another man
You lay yourself to the mercy of death
For the freedom of those who'll never know your name.

You might never see your home again
You might never see your children grow
You might never see your love again
You might never hear the bullet that takes your life
You might never come home
You might come back scarred to where you'll never be the same

Boys like you have fought since the days of the past
The weapons have changed
Spear giving way to the rifle
Sword giving way to the bayonet
Horse giving way to the tank
Your heart remains the same.
Knight and marine
Your heart beats the same
Resounding through the ages

You march away
Rifle in hand, pistol at waist
For a dirt cheap price
You march away, leaving those you love behind
To rest on a field in a far off land

Soldier boy
Your monument is not in the capital
It is not made of marble
It lies in a forgotten patch of nowhere
From the fields of Europe, to the Islands of the oceans
It is made of your own blood and tears
Built by your courage and pain
Your body lays in the shifting sands or a miserable jungle
Sent home in a flag draped box

Your monument lies in the hearts of the men who serve the way you did
Who die as you did
To turn back the tide of our enemies you fight and die
You fight with darkness in your heart
No matter how many Hitlers, Saddams, Kiasers, Stalins, or Osamas arise
All will fall
Against the ones who gladly throw their lives away today
So someone else can live tomorrow

The sun sets and the sword rusts
The wounds heal until only scars remain
The blood dries
But you live on
Even if it is only in the memory of your loved ones
May you find the peace you died for someone else to have
Your soul need not haunt the land
Your duty done
