Red quit speaking when he was fourteen. No one knew the reason. It seemed that there was no cause - one day he had been cheerfully bantering with a challenger as their Pokémon battled, and the next he was mute. He was somewhat more withdrawn also, and Yellow eyed him worriedly as they sat around a table at Professor Oak's lab. The scientist had discovered something new to show them, and as Red listened to him speak; he stroked Pika's fur with an almost agitated expression.
What was bothering him?
“So,” Oak finished, “This is what we have to do. I'm sending all four of you to Johto. I am confident that even without the help of the Gym Leaders you will be able to take care of this threat.”
Blue grinned. Green nodded seriously, his eyes narrowed. Red looked up, gave him a thumb up and said no more.
“So, when do we leave?” Yellow asked.
“Tomorrow morning. You should all be packed before then.”
“We will be,” Green promised.

Red returned home. He packed quickly, ignoring Pika's worried chirps. The electric rat did not know why Master Red was so depressed, but he guessed it had something to do with the trips Master took every week. He would leave for a few hours, taking only Aeroy and Gyara, and return, usually very happy or exhausted and sad.
He wonders whom Master is seeing.
Sometimes, he wonders if Master Red has a Mate. But then, why wouldn't they stay together?
It confuses Pika very much.

Red sneaks off that night, after Pika is asleep and he is packed. Lance looks up as he enters the room. The doors are warded and sealed, guarded by her twin Hakuryuu, and aside from Red, few others can venture in and escape alive.
“What's wrong?”
“They found out about Johto.”
“You mean Team Rocket's actions with the Radio Wave?”
He nods, and she half-smiles. “Well, at least they're doing something about it.”
“I'm frightened, Lance….”
“Why? You've fought wild Pokémon, dragons included, before. And it won't hurt me.” She pointed out.

“Really,” He looks at her, asking the question again.
“Really,” Lance replies.
“But Lance… you're Dragon Master...”
She pulls Red into her embrace. He really is quite thoughtful. “Yes, but those poor Magikarp being forcefully evolved will die if the wave is not stopped. I can endure pain for their sake.”
“You're so brave. I wish I could be like you.”

Lance gives a strained laugh. “Why, Red? Everyone hates me.”
I don't hate you!”
You are different from all of them.”
“Yes.” Red nods. “I suppose I am.” He tips his head up as Lance kisses him, and sighs as his lover begins to trail kisses down his throat.
He relaxes.

No one could know of this relationship, and ever since she had begun teaching him the Songs, he had been unable to speak to anyone but the Dragon Master.
He didn't care. With his new power, he would be able to save the Pokémon. A few months of silence meant nothing.
It also kept him from talking - from telling anyone about his new love, intentionally or not. That way, Lance would be safe, for Red was the only one who knew she was alive, and his lips were sealed.
Red whimpered as Lance continued to kiss him, and sighed.
* My wife… *
Silence could be so wonderful…
