Is she studying right?
How are her grades?
Is she passing her classes?
Is she getting enough sleep?
Is she getting along with her peers?
Are her friends treating her right?
Will she graduate to high school?
Will she have a good future?
Will she pick a good husband?

I ask these questions every day.

VII: Understanding:

Knock on the door at night
“Go away!”
The door opens anyway
“Hey, you asleep?”
Back turned in a huff
“Yes.”
I sat down on the bed
“Listen, you may think we're trying to smother you
But consider this:
Papa and I love you dearly and miss you every day.
We just want to know how you are doing.”
“Fine, now go away!”
“You never act like it.”
*Snort*
“Can't you at least try to be nice and talk to us for a change?”
Silence.
“Just know, that I'm proud of your grades and I love you.”
Off of the bed and out the door.
Nothing more there.
