The House

She's not alone. Phoenix lifted her head.

“Oh, hello.” She sat up.

“What is this place?”

“I don't know.”

“Why are we here?”

“I don't know.”

“What do you remember?”

“Hm… I was going to bed and then I woke up outside at the door. You?”

“Same.”

“So… It's just us here?”

Phoenix looked around. “Yeah. Pretty much.”

“Oh.”

“Is… that a bad thing?”

“No, no. It's not that.”

“What?”

He shook his head. He turned to the hallway. Phoenix cocked her head to the side.

“Where are you going?” she asked.

“I don't know. Just looking around.”

“Who are you? I mean, what is your name?”

He looked over his shoulder. “Jimmy.”

She smiled. “I'm Phoenix.”

Two in the house. Two rooms opened up. Thirty-five more to go.

Phoenix laid back down on the floor. Where had she seen him before? She hadn't. The girl shrugged to herself. She closed her eyes and dozed off.

The house was big. Maybe too big. How could this be real? Jimmy whistled.

“Damn. What is this place?” He pulled out his phone. No service here. Go figure.

“Heh,” he said. Suddenly, the doorbell rang.

Downstairs, Phoenix opened her eyes. The door opened again. She turned her head as the footsteps grew closer.

“Oh, you're here,” she said. “How did you find me?”
