A Song for the Hardened Heart- Chapter 1: "Vacation"

Notes: Hiei fans, forgive me if this bites but this is my first time writing a Hiei fic. No, this is not yaoi… You know, I used to hate Hiei and really like Kuwabara but it got me thinking: I opened up possibilities of me liking Kuwabara and looked beyond his…::cough, cough:: `rough' exterior. I'm trying my hardest to do that with Hiei because everyone has a reason for acting a certain way.

Steam blew into Hiei's eyes as he stepped into the men's bath at the hot spring. The tingling, warm sensation was new to him, sending exhilarating shivers up his back.
Days ago Yusuke had earned himself, Kuwabara, Kurama and Hiei a vacation (as Koenma put it). For this, the boys picked the just the place for relaxation: a hot spring. Hiei wasn't quite sure what had made him come along. Maybe it was Kurama asking him or maybe it was the way Kuwabara had hoped he wouldn't come. Whatever the reason, he was there and that was that.
Yusuke sat nearby, his hands behind his head and his eyes half closed, ready for sleep. Hiei shifted his eyes to Kurama who was sitting in his robe nearby drinking sake. The clouds about drifted by and Hiei sank into the hazy waters until only his head showed above the water. The silence Hiei seemed to be enjoying came abruptly to a halt when Yusuke yelled, water splashing over his head and springing his hair out of place. "Kuwabara!" Kuwabara splashed around in the water while trying not to laugh himself to death. "You should've seen your face when I popped up in front of you Urameshi!" Kuwabara's overly large smile distorted his cheeks and stretching out his face a bit.
"What juvenile children." Hiei grunted as Yusuke and Kuwabara continued to wrestle and ram each other into the water. Kurama tear-dropped and offered Hiei some sake. "I think you'll need this." Kurama said. Hiei took the sake gratefully and drank 1/5 of the bottle. Kurama looked at him strangely. "Aren't you afraid of getting drunk?" Hiei wiped his mouth on the back of his hand and replied, "It takes a damn lot to get me smashed."
Yusuke sat at the table, kneeling down, practically drooling over the food laid out on the table by the waiter so far. Kuwabara was as well and Kurama and Hiei on the other side of the table. Kurama watched as the waiter came back in balancing two trays of food in the palms of his hand. "Here you are sirs. Enjoy!" he said sitting the food down. Each fighter took his dinner and began to eat. Hiei had barely taken a bit of his rice when he noticed someone looking at him out of the corner of his eye. It was a girl, about 14 sitting at the table behind them. Her jet-black hair hung down to her waist and matched her equally seductive eyes. Hiei took a glance at her, sensing her ki. Then he cautiously turned back around and continued his dinner.
By the time dinner was finished, they had gone through two pitchers of tea and soda, three orders of egg rolls, and more noodles then you could envision. Right off the bat Yusuke suggested going to the game room. "I'm for that. I've been eager to challenge Hiei to another game of pool." Kurama said slyly. Hiei smirked in reply. "Yeah, and feather punch here still can't beat me in the punching game." Yusuke laughed pointing to Kuwabara. Kuwabara turned bright red and then remarked, "Hmm. I guess I should mention the time I kicked your ass in Rocks, Paper, Scissors!" The two rivals rammed their heads together growling as Kurama and Hiei walked out of the dining room. "We'll see you two idiots down there." Hiei exclaimed following his partner down the stairs. Yusuke and Kuwabara ran after the two, still yelling challenges at each other.
Hiei sat in the corner watching as Kuwabara and Yusuke fought over who was better. Kurama sat keeping score. "Well, so far Yusuke's beaten Kuwabara in two out of five rounds of Tetris, one out of five rounds of pinball, and five out of five rounds of the punching game. Kuwabara's beaten Yusuke in three out of five rounds of Tetris, four out of five rounds in pinball and zero out of five rounds of the punching game." Yusuke slammed his fist on the pool table. "Damn! That means it's a tie!" he cried. Hiei smirked. "What childish ningens." He thought to himself. Anyway, the game room war continued on into the night as Hiei watched, entertained by the two boys' fighting.
It was eleven o'clock when the group returned to their rooms. Kurama was half asleep and Yusuke and Kuwabara had exhausted themselves from fighting. Hiei waited until everyone had gone to bed before he slipped out into the gardens.
The moon was bright that night and Hiei could see everything perfectly like it was morning. A tiny breeze blew ripples across the duck pond rocking the water lilies back and forth. Suddenly, a noise caught Hiei's attention. "Who's there?" Hiei turned around to face the girl from the dining hall. Her black hair was in a braid and she was wearing a black party dress. "Hello, Hiei." Hiei's eyes widened. "How do you know my name ningen?" The girl smiled and approached Hiei. "For one Hiei, I am not a ningen. Second, I know lots about you." Hiei reached for his katana. "Like what?" "You and your friends are in danger here." Hiei drew the sword and pointed it at the girl. "Is that a threat?" The girl chuckled and pushed the blade away. "No, it is a warning…"
