I really wouldn't know how to describe this story but it takes place during two time periods. The first one: On the day of Inuyasha's birth during a time way before him getting pinned to the sacred tree. We get a glimpse of his mother, father, and Sesshoumaru. The second period takes place right after he gets pinned to the tree where we have an orphaned Kaede who is under the care of a healer woman who knows more about InuYasha than she leads on.
