The Watcher

It was six in the north
and six in the south
that was the life she lived.
Always looking down
at the world below.
They treated her like a china doll
as though she were something special.
They locked her up
in a flying case.
They took her around the world.

Even though she looked like them
she was all alone.
The only one of her kind
in that flying case.
There were books and people everywhere
and yet she wanted nothing to do with them.
She wanted to escape.

Her brothers and sisters all over the world
they were free.
They could come and go as they pleased.
They could do whatever they wanted.
One was an artist
painting her pictures.
One flew an airplane
soaring through the sky.
One made deliveries
learning all she could.
And one ran a café
living a simple life.

She was the watcher
made to observe,
recording all she saw.
She hoped and she prayed
almost every single day.
She wished she could leave
and return to her home.
But as long as they were there
that could never happen.

She heard it one day
the sweet sound of freedom.
It called to her.
Fly, fly away.
Into the water you must go.
Jump in and be free.

And so she did.
Jumping into the water.
Soaring through the air.
She was free,
free as a bird.
Touching the clouds
she was free.
Free to soar.
Free to fly.
Free to be.

And then she heard it.
It was soft and gentle.
It was old and wise.
It was kind and caring.
It pulled her back in.
It was the voice of the aged,
the voice of an old woman.

Climbing from the water she smiled.
She knew, one day she would be free once more.
