Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha. Unless you count the plastic model on my shelf. If that's the case, then I own Sesshoumaru too. Ha. (Inuyasha and all associated characters in this fanfic are owned by Rumiko Takahashi. The only one I own is Yashamaru.)

"Ha! Let that be a lesson to you!" Jaken screeched at the fading form of Magatsuhi, the evil spirit of the Shikon no Tama that they had just defeated. "Sesshoumaru-sama is undefeatable! He is such an amazing taiyoukai that he even snatched his arm back out of the depths of the underworld! And he created Bakusaiga - the greatest sword of all!"
"Jaken-sama..." Rin warned. "You know Sesshoumaru-sama will step on you if you do any more of that."
"-No one can hurt him! He's the Lord of the West! Now-" Squish. Rin knelt down to help the kappa up while reprimanding him.
"I told you so, Jaken-sama! You should listen to Rin next time!" the young girl pestered him.
Inuyasha pulled Kagome to her feet roughly, asking Miroku, Sango, and Shippo if they were okay.
"Yes, we're fine..." Sango trailed off as she noticed a wary look creep over Inuyasha's face.
"Hey, Sesshoumaru!" Inuyasha demanded. "Why is there someone approaching that smells exactly like you? You have a twin or something? There's blood, too!" The group's interest had been piqued - they waited for the demon to answer Inuyasha.
"Blood..." Sesshoumaru replied distantly, as if his mind was far away. "For once, hanyou, you are correct. Something must have happened to her." He strode over to a flat section of the cliff and kneeled. The group was puzzled by his cryptic response and behavior.
A flash of white light appeared before Sesshoumaru, blinding all but Inuyasha and the older demon. Before they realized what was going on, Sesshoumaru ordered, "Leave. This is none of your business."
"Like hell we will!" Inuyasha spit at him.
While everyone else's eyes cleared, Jaken asked, "Shall I clear them off?"
"No." Sesshoumaru answered. "If they insist, they might as well stay...as long as they do not interfere."
There was a woman lying next to Sesshoumaru - no, at second glance, a demoness. Most of her body was obscured by his fur pelt, but even the humans could smell - and when they shifted to look past the inuyoukai - see the blood.
"How did this happen?" he asked her, almost tenderly.
"I...was...fighting a lesser taiyoukai...and his accomplices suddenly turned on me...as well..." she answered, obviously in great pain.
"How many, and what happened to them?" Sesshoumaru inquired analytically.
"Maybe...five or so...they were trying to capture me...to force you to relinquish the Western Lands...to them." She paused, coughing up blood. "You don't want to know...what happened to them, but they're...good and dead." She sighed and winced before her sparkling blue eyes closed for the final time, her knee-length silver hair fanned out about her. Sesshoumaru rose and paused, studying her frail, bloodied form.
"Who is important enough to Sesshoumaru that a taiyoukai would attempt to hold her hostage? And for the Western Lands, no less!" Kagome whispered to her friends, oblivious to the fact that Sesshoumaru could hear her every word loud and clear through his sharp ears.
"I don't know. Maybe a lover?" Miroku muttered jokingly.
"You've got to be kidding!" Inuyasha replied. "Sesshoumaru would never even think about something like that!"
He broke off as his brother slid the newly transformed Tenseiga out of its sheath and swept it over the demoness, effectively ressurecting her. Sesshoumaru lifted the woman's head up and asked her, "Feeling better?"
"That is so unlike Sesshoumaru! Usually he acts like he's doesn't have a heart!" Inuyasha hissed, stunned.
Kagome knelt down and asked the woman her name before Sesshoumaru could stop her. The woman motioned at the group, seemingly asking Sesshoumaru if she could talk to them for a few minutes. Sesshoumaru acknowledged the wave before laying her down and saying, "I will expect you later, Yashamaru." She nodded, and he gathered up Rin and Jaken and quickly left.
"I'm sorry - it seems that you all are not on good terms with him." She sighed. "I shouldn't be surprised. My mate doesn't really associate with humans or hanyous much - no offense, of course." she finished quickly.
"None taken, dear lady." answered Miroku. "But I must admit that I'm quite curious as to what you just said - mate? You're Sesshoumaru's mate?" he asked incredulously.
She looked at him in curiosity. "Of course. I know your hanyou companion smelled Sesshoumaru instead of me - I guess you're not familiar with demon mating rituals?"
Sango blushed. "I guess that's a kind of obvious."
Yashamaru picked up again. "When demons mate, the male infuses his scent in the female by biting her so she will always smell like her mate and therefore warn interested demons away."
"And your kimono?" asked Kagome, for she had noticed that Yashamaru's kimono was the same as Sesshoumaru's haori, but the sakuras patterns were the same color blue that her eyes were.
"Oh, this?” she asked, looking down at her blood-spattered kimono. “That's the symbol for the Western regions - the red pattern means that he is the Lord of the West and the blue is its counterpart, meaning that I am the Lady of the West."
By the end of her explanation, Inuyasha was openly staring at her, mouth agape, clearly stunned.
