Hierarchy

Kogure has always been the second person: his father's second son, Akagi's second-in-command, basketball's second-rate player. He was content with this -- not quite reaching the stars is preferable to a fall from grace.

One day, while they were idly practicing in the gym after the entrance exams, Mitsui abruptly clenched the basketball between his hands and turned to Kogure.

"Anzai-sensei wasn't the only reason I came back."

Mitsui's eyes were spilling secrets before his mouth could, and Kogure thought he could sense a familiar pattern etched into the pause. Kogure smiled, warm and pleasant.

"Oh?"

"You were the third."
