A New Life

Haily walked into the house wide-eyed. It was like walking into another dimension. Her family had just moved to this rich neighborhood in Bayside from a middle class section of New York City, and this house was a far cry from what she was used to.

Her old house had been just that, old. Spider webs strung across corners of the high ceilings where they were either overlooked or ignored. Cumbersome antique furniture graced every corner of the large house, making it seem tiny. It had been painted dark, dreary colors by the previous owner and they never painted over them because her father liked them.

He himself was a dark man and the house suited him perfectly. The only reason he could afford to live in such an expensive house was because he got it from some poor old man whom he had gambled out of his money. the man gave him the house as a last resort along with all the furniture. Of course, her mother didn't even know this at the time.

This new house wasn't a mansion, but it was big. Especially considering there was much more living space than the house her family had called home for ten years. It was also empty. They could do whatever they liked here. Her mother bought a new wine-red couch along with a brown leather recliner the minute they found the house, and it had been delivered before they moved in. They hadn't painted yet, but her mother was talking about it. So far, this was all the furniture in the room, but more was coming. She was going shopping tomorrow.

All of the walls had been painted a crisp white, adding to the clean cut look of the house. In all, there were four bedrooms, two with their own bathrooms, a bathroom downstairs and upstairs, a kitchen with adjoining dining room, living room, and remodeled basement. Only the living room and kitchen had any decor at all. The kitchen contained cabinets, a fridge, and a stove.

--------------------

Her mother and father divorced nearly six years ago, and her mom had finally remarried just over two months ago. The first thing they did was move out of New York City and into this house in Bayside. The man she married was undoubtedly rich. He was a New York City cop, but quit last week. Haily suspected that he had a rich relative or someone that he inherited some of it from though, because he blew his money almost as fast as he got it. Haily was only hoping that their wealth would last and the family wouldn't end up deep in debt.

Haily's mother's name was Midori. She was only thirty-five years old, pretty young for the mother of a sixteen year old. Her dark brown hair was cut into a short but stylish bob, and looked well on her. All through her childhood, Haily had clung to her mother for support, but the past few years had been a little troublesome. Her feelings about her mom didn't change though, and she still loved her very much. She was her rock. It seemed as though her mom was the only person that she could trust, and for her sake, she withheld most of her feelings from her. Midori was so upset after the divorce, she didn't have the heart to add to that despair.

Haily's twelve year old brother was Jay. He was starting seventh grade tomorrow and she silently thanked the heavens that the high school and middle school were separate. Not that she hated him exactly, in fact, she loved him dearly, but he was a huge pain. She caught sight of his sandy brown hair as he rushed in and flung himself onto the new sofa.

"You better take off you shoes, or mom'll fucking kill you."

Jay got up and walked into the porch to take off his shoes. As he walked past Haily he remarked, "And she'd kill you if she heard you swearing." He smiled at her and laid back down.

Haily glared at him and walked into the kitchen. Standing there with her mother was the newest member of the Domay household, Shawn. She was not particularly thrilled with the man her mom had chosen to marry, but she had to admit that it was better than her first choice. Shawn had short blond hair, and was very muscular for a man in his forties. This had to be what drew her mom to him in the first place because she couldn't see much else going for him. That was probably just because she didn't want to see anything else.

Midori yelled at her daughter from up the stairs. "Haily, which room do you want."

"Um... just a minute, I'll be up in a sec." It didn't even register in her mind that her mother was now upstairs instead of in the kitchen where she had last seen her. 'I must be daydreaming again.' Haily tended to space out every once in a while when she daydreamed.

She definitely wanted one of the rooms with a bathroom. What teenage girl wouldn't? She was also sure that the adults would want the other one.

Haily was halfway up the stairs when Jay rushes past her. He smirked, "I get to choose first."
As he pushed her out of the way, she grabbed his arm and held him back as she ran up the stairs. "The hell you are!"

Spotting one of the rooms that she wanted, Haily ran in and claimed it as hers. "I've got this one, so if you were hoping for a bathroom, you're outta luck kid."

"I really wish you wouldn't call me a kid, it makes me sound eight years old. I'm in seventh grade."

"And still a brat."

"Dammit Haily, shut up."

"Look who's swearing now." She was referring to the remark he made earlier. With a smirk on her face, she shut the door and took a quick survey of her new room.

It was rather roomy, but not huge. It was bigger than her room in their old apartment though, and it seemed bigger than the room in their old house. After her parents divorced, Jay, her mother and her moved into an old apartment building. Her room, of course, was small and smelled like mold. The rest of the apartment was no better.

The bathroom door was on the right side of the wall facing you as you walked in. She opened the door and looked in. the walls were painted a light mocha brown while the tiled were white. She thought to herself, 'I'm definitely repainting... or replacing the tiles.’ It would probably be the first because she had no idea how to replace tiles and didn't think Shawn would let her anyway.

"At least there's a shower and not a tub." Noticing the mirror over the sink, Haily walked over to take a look. She had dark brown hair falling down past her shoulders. It was straight, but not limp or lifeless at all, not too think, not to thin. She pulled out the band holding her hair up and let it fall in front of her face. Though it had been up for the past six hours, it fell straight as though it had never been up. She was one of those people who never got ponytail bumps.

She had often thought about cutting her hair short, but decided against it purely because she didn't think that it would look all that great. Her eyes were a deep shade of brown that matched her hair quite nicely. Both contrasted well with her beige skin. Although she had gotten almost no sleep in the past few days, her complexion was nearly flawless.

Many guys had told her that she was pretty before, but she took their flirting for what it was. No guy had ever really wanted a relationship with her though. Well... there was one guy.

She hated him more than anyone, other than her dad maybe. For all she cared, he could go to hell and stay there, and she wouldn't even bat an eyelash. The jackass was her first boyfriend. At first everything was great. He took her out, made her feel special, bought her things. She thought she was in love. At least until she found out that he had been sleeping with his ex-girlfriend behind her back. It turns out that there was still something between them. 'Yeah,' she thought, 'I wouldn't do it with him, so he went back to someone who would.' It ended there and she never spoke to either one of them again.

Sick of looking at herself, Haily flopped down on the bare bed. She had not bothered to unpack anything as of yet. Boxes were piled in the corners and only one of them was open. She began to get sleepy, very sleepy.

--------------------

Haily was awakened nearly half an hour later by her mother. Walking into her teenage daughters room, Midori scolded her, "Haily, why haven't you unpacked any of you stuff yet?"

"I don't know mom, I guess I fell asleep," she said while rubbing her eyes.

"Her mother's tone softened. "It's time for supper dear, come downstairs." That said, Midori walked out the door. Taking a moment to fully wake up, Haily ran downstairs after her.

Obviously her mom did not have time to make a big home cooked meal with all the unpacking that had to be done, but Haily didn't mind. She had grown used to frozen food over the course of the past week. Not that she ever minded it before.

She walked into the dining room and sat down at the table next to Shawn and Jay. In the middle of the table was a large pizza. At least it was the kind she liked.

"I'm sorry that I didn't get the chance to cook today. I've just been so busy." Midori quickly apologized before anyone could say anything.

Shawn reassured her, "It's alright, we've all been really busy, and we don't mind eating pizza again."

Haily decided to start off the conversation. "So... Shawn, did you find a job yet?" She grabbed a slice of pizza while awaiting his answer.

"Yeah, actually I did. I applied at the police station last week, and I just heard from them yesterday."

"That's cool." Jay was busily shoving food into his mouth and wasn't paying too much attention to the rest of them.

"Jay, leave some food for the rest of us," barked Haily.

"Through a mouth full of food, Jay whined, "It's not my fault I'm hungry. I don't pig out all day like you."

Haily caught the insult and reached out to smack him on the arm, but he realized what she was doing and dodged the hand.

"You're so busy stuffing your face that maybe you haven't noticed, but the rest of us want to eat too." She shot him an evil glare, but he knew that she was just giving him a hard time.

Teasingly, Haily grabbed a slice of pizza off of his plate. Jay yelled out in surprise. Jumping up and trying to get his food back, he flipped the plate over. It landed on the floor, but luckily the floor was wood, do no damage was done.

Jay picked up the plate and ruined pizza slice and placed them on the table. Grabbing his napkin, he leaned over and wiped up the sauce that had come off of the plate.

Red in the face, Midori yelled, "Haily! Jay! Cut it out now!"

"Sorry mom," both replied in unison. Although they tried hard to continue that meal in silence, both Haily and Jay burst out laughing in less than five minutes. Soon however, Midori and Shawn joined in. The whole family was enjoying themselves, and Haily finally felt like everything was normal again for the first time in a long time.

Her mother did not seem mad anymore and actually joined into their pizza game. She grabbed a slice off of Shawn’s plate and set it on her own. Of course, he was a sore loser, and he snatched it back before Midori could protect it. Before she could try again, he stuffed it into his mouth.

Following Shawn's example, Jay managed to shove two pieces into his mouth, eating them in record time. Both women looked at them and then each other, disgusted and amazed by the guy's behavior.

Haily chuckled, "Jay you pig, I didn't know you had such a big mouth."

Jay turned to her and shot back, "I warned you I was hungry, not my fault you didn't get any food."

Later, after their supper was finished, Midori gathered the plates and glasses that miraculously hadn't been spilt. Haily ran upstairs to her room.

--------------------

Haily thought that maybe he ought to unpack her things. She decided to start with her clothes because she was going to need those the most. That way, she would have something to wear even if she didn't get around to unpacking everything.

As soon as you walked into the room, you would see the bathroom door, and immediately to the left of it was the closet door. She had a small walk-in closet. There was just enough room for two, maybe three people to fit. Haily's bed was on the left wall, in the top corner. At the head of her bed were two windows, one on each wall coming together to meet each other at the corner. Having a thing about windows, Haily liked the corner.

Three or so feet away from the foot of the bed was a nineteen inch TV. Sitting on the shelf below the TV were a VCR and a DVD player. She had gotten the DVD player for her birthday last year, but she had the TV and VCR since eighth grade.

In between the TV and her bed was another window. Haily looked out and saw that there a tree near the house. It was only a few feet away and to the left of the window, part of it covering the window. 'Wow, it would be easy to get out of here. I'll have to remember that.' She also noticed that there was no screen on the window.

'They're making this too easy. Do they honestly think I would be too stupid to notice.' More than likely, they were the ones who hadn't noticed. She would be sure to keep it from them too.
