Ah, or should I say arigatou gozaimasu? I have been obsessed with Japan and its culture since I was young, and I'm glad that you've taken the time to bring all of this to light. I do believe that authors are allowed to take certain liberties with their stories, but I also feel that they should respect the Japanese culture. This is why I try to avoid writing fan fiction that takes place in modern Japan. I admit, I am not Japanese either, it is the one Asian ethnicity that I lack, however, it frustrates me when authors are blatantly ignorant of the Japanese culture. While this was informative, it was also quite the pleasure to read. Thank you.

Thank you very much for writing this informative guide for us. My favorite part was the story about your brother's friend with the tattoo and how he set up an arranged marriage for him because people thought he was a high ranking yakuza member.

wow, that really surprised me on how different Japanese culture is from the American culture. I was reading about kissing, and how it is only done in private, and how even touching is something intimate. It's strange, but now I see why Kagome and InuYasha always became embarrassed when they accidentally touched each other. (Like when InuYasha grabbed her hand, when he was telling Kagome about Kikyo.) Good stuff though, I will definitely keep this on my list!!

This is a fantastic guide to general cultural differences between the East and West. Being Asian, myself, I often do find comments on random anime that surprise me, before I realize that the comments were strange because of cultural discrepancies and not meant to be offensive. I hope a lot of authors read this 'article' of yours so that we no longer have to read too many culturally incorrect fanfics. ^_^

that was very informative, (though I knew a bunch of that already) I wish we weren't "barbaric" when It came to health care, but I don't see the greedy power holders leting that change anytime soon.

lol I know... My brothers Girlfriend who lives in China (in a city(they were very surprised when my brother took a picture of what the outside of our house looks like and there were no people...)) and they are pretty modern, but when her father was sick her mother gave him some of the turtle to eat (medicine), and they don't have a washing machine either... its going to be really funny when she and her friend come here to study and find how different Asia and wester countries (I live in Australia) are. Note to any one else look up Hero Flom Japan if you want to hear some more stuff about Japan... from an American point of view... Oh one more thing Bathing!!! that would be something that is different from the western point of view.

It is very nice of you to prepare a guide like this. I'm sure many writers, like myself, will find it quite useful. I'm very glad to see that I did many things right in my stories. Perhaps it is because I've grown up in an eastern culture. So, it's a good thing that I emphasized -although unintentionally- Kagome's desire to have kids in my story. I'm so glad to learn that children are valued so much in Japan, and my friend, I think you might guess why. And oops... I used hand shake in my story. I'm editing it now.
