CHAPTER FOUR:
Skulls, Bones and Flying Stones

We came to large room with a spiral staircase going all the way to the top, I walked to the middle of the room and looked up to see how high up the stairs went. But all I saw were thousands of floors; I couldn't even see the roof of the castle.
“Wow, these must be the highest stairs I've ever seen in my life.” I muttered to myself, stone decorations covered the walls. But cobwebs hung from the majestic statues that once were…well, majestic. The stone was cold and pale, but stories were written on the walls indicating the history the castle was in. I shook my head in disappointment wondering what caused the people of this castle to leave it in ruins.
“Whoa, Dante come over here!” Nero called from the other side of the room, I walked over and looked at the wall, it showed creatures that were with the humans. Humans with demons-like appearances, animals that stood on two legs and…
“Dragons?” I mumbled as I saw dragons scattered in the humans, heads lifted with pride and joy. Wings outstretched reaching an impressive wingspan.
“I never knew humans used to be friendly to them.” Nero said, I nodded my head in agreement and stood back,
“This is getting interesting, did something happen here that humans had to abandon this castle? A war probably?”
“I have no idea, but I guess we'll find out on the way up.” Nero told me as he looked over to where the staircase begun.
“Then let's figure it out before we lose anymore time!” I said as I leapt over to the second floor. I looked over the edge to see Nero staring at me, he shook his head and jumped up and threw out his Devil Bringer and grabbed onto the ledge of the third floor and flew up to the fourth. I looked up and he looked down at me and laughed,
“Seems as though I'm beating you old man!” He called down to me. I grinned from ear to ear and jumping from ledge to ledge, I went past Nero and didn't stop until after a long time that felt like an hour, I reached the top of the stairs. Nero was waiting, looking at his Devil Bringer and asked, “What took you so long? I could've had a tea party without you.” Nero joked,
“Well, I'll fell sorry for you then because you became a girl.” I joked; Nero looked at me with a confused stare,
“What do tea parties have to do with becoming a girl?” I sighed loudly and said,
“Never mind, I don't even get it myself. Damn I make the lamest jokes.” Nero just shrugged his shoulders and looked at a red door heavily accented with gold. The door looked brand new and from the looks of it, it didn't even have a speck of dust on it.
“Guess this is the only way to keep going forward.” Nero said, I gave him one of those `well no duh' looks and he just rolled his eyes. I wrapped my hand around the curved handle and pushed, the door swung in silently and I looked in. It was a little too dark to see so I looked over to see a torch on the wall next to the door. It was lit and I pulled it out and looked at it, “What's wrong Dante?” Nero asked as he saw me eye the torch suspiciously,
“This torch is fresh, like it's only been lit for a few minutes.” I said, Nero looked at me, then the torch, then back at me,
“So, you're saying that someone came through before us right?” He asked. I nodded and he looked into the room. “Now this is really getting interesting.”
“C'mon Nero.” I beckoned; I walked in the room and saw bones scattered across the ground. Some were abnormally large and some that were so small, that you could've used them as toothpicks.
“What the…” I turned around to see Nero looking at a skull hanging from the wall. Horns protruded from the head and curved back to sharp ends. The skull was longer than my body from the looks of it, and the sharpened teeth looked like daggers. The eye sockets were enormous, bigger than both of my fists put together and the nostrils was about the size of both of my fists put together.
“What type of creature could have a skull like this?” I whispered to myself, I reached out my hand and my fingertips touched the snout of the creatures skull and I pulled it back quickly as I heard a loud rumble. The skull clattered to the ground and Nero looked at me with an annoyed glare,
“Nice going Dante, you just broke the skull.”
“Shut up Nero, I barely even touched it.” I snapped, Nero stuck out his tongue and I looked at him. He's just like a little kid; I sighed and looked at the skull and saw that it wasn't broken; it wasn't even touching the ground! I cocked my head at the skull and it moved of its own accord, floating even higher and the jaw opened and a hollow roar came out. The bones on the ground seemed to clatter and shake and they too lifted off the ground. I spear-like tip flew at Nero,
“Hey kid! Look out!” I called over as I dodged a flying bone, Nero rolled out of the way just in time. All the pieces in the room were flying around the skull, the mouth agape in a noiseless roar. The pieces were connecting to the head like a puzzle; soon a neck was connected to the head, then a ribcage, legs, wings and tail. A loud growl left the mouth of what looked like a skeleton dragon. The head moved and looked at us, its eyes sockets were crimson red and angry,
“Worthless humans.” The dragon growled, “What is your business here?”
“Nero, check it out, it talks!” I said as I laughed, the dragon skull turned its head to me,
“You dare laugh at Grendolo? You betrayed my kin and killed us off, with none of us remaining! Humans only care about power, powerful weapons and war. All humans are the same; their lust for power stays unquenched.” It rumbled in a low voice,
“So you want to kill all the humans?” Nero asked,
“I would, if only I wasn't dead and had the power to leave this castle, my soul is bound to it, protecting it from humans like you,” Grendolo said as he lowered his head with a slow, deadly movement,
“Well, we just want to get through. Nothing else; now let us by bone head!” I taunted, the dragon growled and swung its spiked tail slowly.
“I protect this castle, and I won't let intruders go by me! NOW DIE!” the spiked tail lashed out and I jumped to avoid it, at the same time, I dropped the torch to the ground. Grendolo opened his mouth and let out a black flame that enveloped me. I landed on the ground realizing that my coat was lit on fire,
“Damn it! My coat's all charred!” I said as I grabbed the edge of it and put it out with my hand and let go of my coat. “You're gonna pay for that!” I said to the dragon, the dragon lunged at me and a gunshot went off and the massive beast stumbled. Nero had shot the skeleton dragon on the snout with his Blue Rose. The dragon roared and swung a clawed foot at Nero, catching him on the side. Nero flew through the air and hit the stone wall and fell to the ground coughing. I looked up just to see the dragon swing his tail at him and Nero barely managed to dodge it by laying flat on the ground. I ran at the dragon with Rebellion in my hand and held it over my head and was about to take a swing at the dragon when the dragon opened its mouth and lunged at me. It jaws were over me and the dragon bit down, biting me as well. I was hanging out of his mouth half way and the dragon bit down harder, I yelled as I heard my bones crack and break. Nero stood up and ran at the dragon, about to attack with his Devil Bringer, but the dragon swung his tail and pinned him down in a way that he couldn't even move his arm. He grunted as he tried to pull himself out of the prison, but he couldn't even wiggle. The dragon chuckled and said,
“Well well, seems as though these little humans can't even get out. Just as I'd expected.” Grendolo spread his bony wings and a loud laugh filled the room but it was cut out by a large boulder that struck him in the head, the powdery residue sprinkled to the ground and I sneezed. All of us looked over to the source of the boulder and we saw someone we thought we wouldn't see again,
“Whitney?” I said groggily as I felt a trickle of blood leave my mouth, I blinked my eyes a few times to try and focus on the figure, I saw the glint of the long brown hair and I grinned, “So, you weren't dead.” I whispered under my breath,
“Took you long enough!” Nero complained,
“Aw come on, you were the ones that left me sleeping all by myself!” She said, she looked at the dragon and shook her head, “What have you two gotten into?” She asked, “Well, it doesn't matter, you guys can tell me later.” she said as she raised her hands into the air. Rocks lifted up from the ground and circled around her, she started walking towards the dragon and held out her hands and closed them, compressing the large stones into pebbles, she pointed her finger at him and the small rocks flew at high speed, piercing the dragon and leaving small holes in its bones. The dragon fell back and opened his jaws and I fell to the ground, my leg was in an awkward position and my torso had holes from the dragons' teeth. I stood up slowly and dusted myself off, Nero was also released from the dragon's grasp and he stood up as well, his demonic arm glowing brightly.
“Who are you?!” Grendolo screeched as he stared at Whitney,
“I'm Whitney, and I'm going to kick your ass! Nobody hurts my friends like that!” She yelled at Grendolo. Her hands started to glow and she lifted them to show fire enveloping her hands, she threw them out and shot a jet stream at the skeletal dragon. She put her arms down and the smoke cleared, the dragon lunged at us but Nero and I brought out our guns and shot at the demon, it fell to the ground and Nero and I pulled out our swords and cut through the bones so that they fell away from the body. Soon only the head remained and it looked at us,
“You aren't humans. But you aren't demons, what are you?”
“Don't ask, I'm not even sure myself!” I said to the skull,
“I thought I was human, but know I don't know what I am.” Whitney added,
“Me, well…I'm gonna give the same answer both of them gave!” Nero laughed as he looked over at Whitney and me,
“Hm, people who don't know who they are.” The skull chuckled, “Very well, take my soul and go on. I have no reason to live anymore.” The dragons' eyes dimmed and the skull was lit with black flames. Three shimmering objects clattered on the ground and each one of us picked it up. I had a sword with a black blade, Whitney had a strange looking gun, she pointed it and shot it and a black bullet ricochet off the wall, the gun shook and black tendrils flew out and wrapped itself around her left arm and sunk into her skin, leaving a black tattoo-like snake design and the gun disappeared from her hand. Nero's shiny thingy was absorbed by his Devil Bringer, it turned black for a few seconds and returned to its blue color,
“Sweet, I'm part skeleton dragon now!” Nero exclaimed as he pumped his fist into the air, we looked at him and he asked in a questioning matter, “What?” Whitney shook her head and I grinned,
“Good to see you're ok kid.” I said as I wrapped an arm around her neck and pulled her close to give her a noogie.
“Hey!” She laughed, I let go and she grinned, “Good to see you too.” She said as she gave me a hug, she let go and hugged Nero. He seemed a little surprised about the hug,
“We thought you were a goner.” Nero said with a smile,
“I thought so too, but someone told me that it wasn't my time to leave yet.” She mumbled into Nero's clothes, Nero looked at me and pulled her away,
“Somebody brought you back?” he asked, Whitney nodded,
“Ya, it was a man that wore all blue with his hair all spiky. He told me that my work wasn't done. To think about it, he kinda reminded me of you Dante, he looked like you in a way.” My eyes went wide at Whitney's description of the person she saw.
“Did he say his name?” I asked, Whitney looked at me and shook her head,
“No, he left before I could ask him anything.” She looked at me curiously, “Why? Do you know him or something?” I shook my head,
“No, I was just wondering if he said who he was.” `This man that she saw, could it be Vergil? I always doubted that he was dead but…' Whitney gave me a lop-sided grin,
“Well, I don't think it matters, I get to see my two part-demon friends that are actually nice to me!”
“Yeah, you're right.” I said,
“Oh, by the way, thanks for Yearning Fire.”
“Who? Wait, what?” I asked, confused. Whitney reached back and brought out the sword that I had left with her, the golden blade shining in the torch light,
“Yearning Fire, you left him with me.” She explained,
“It has a name?” Nero asked,
“Well duh! He told me his name!” Whitney said cheerfully,
“You can hear the sword talk?” I asked her, she nodded her head,
“Yeah, he kept me company when I was catching up to you two.” She told me, I nodded my head and said,
“By the way, what was with the rock and fire throwing?”
“Oh, that. I have no idea where it came from. When I woke up, I could control that, I can also control water and wind.”
“All four elements.” Whispered Nero,
“What?” Whitney asked as she turned to face Nero,
“Nothing, just talking to myself.” He answered.

Can Vergil be the one who's behind all this? Where did Whitney get her powers to control all four elements? Read on to find out, when I finish writing the 5th chapter that is!
