Digimon Fan Fiction ❯ Christmas Wishes ❯ Christmas Wishes ( Chapter 1 )

[ A - All Readers ]

"Hey Arch, we've thought up a Christmas fic for you." Omni said.

"That is if you don't mind using your one Daikari." Prima said hopping onto the table.

"Lay it on me." The two muses leaned down and whispered in Arch's ear. "You're on." He said cracking his knuckles. "But you two do disclaimers."

"Okay." Omni began flipping through a filing cabinet. "Let's see I've got the location for Jimmy Hoffa's body."

"I've got the precise coordinates for Atlantis." Prima said thumbing through another cabinet. "And Amelia Earhart's retirement home, but no deed for Digimon."

"Me either. I guess Arch doesn't own digimon."

"Then he must not be making any money off this fic. Any dedications?"

"Yep. Slap a bow on this, cause this is my Christmas gift to the PRAOPOARI gang and all my fans. And a special shout out to Digifan3:16 and Digital Penman who have given me many long and interesting IM sessions. Now to the fic!"

Christmas Wishes
By Archangel Nightshade Bloodraven

It a cold blustery night as Odiba's newest Chosen took a well deserved rest. As the sky cleared from the first snowfall of the season, a shooting star rocketed across the sky and as is the custom of such an occurrence a few of them offered up wishes.

"I wish she loved me."

"I wish I was strong enough to tell her how I feel."

"I wish he knew how he makes me feel."

"I wish for understanding."

The funny thing about a wish is if you make it at just the right moment....

It finds a way of coming true, but not quite as you might expect.

***

The next day began innocently enough with the Chosen preparing to go to school. But for one of them it was start of something new.

"I feel great! I think maybe, just maybe... I'll tell her today." TK grinned getting out of bed and moving briskly not only to shake the slight chill of his mother's apartment but brimming with enthusiasm and confidence, which grew steadily stronger as he went about his daily routine.

By the time he reached school TK was practically floating when Kari approached him. "Hey TK, there's something I wanna tell you."

"Me too." He said noticing how she looked strangely nervous. "You wanna go first, you look like you could stand to get something off your chest."

Kari licked her lips and took a deep breath. "I'm going steady with Davis."

TK arched an eyebrow and hid his shattered heart. "When? How?"

"Today, I just realized that I hadn't given him a fair chance and we got to talking and I asked him to go out on Friday and he agreed. We just clicked. I don't know why I hated him for so long. He's really not that bad."

TK couldn't believe his ears, but he saw the superior smirk on Davis' face and the absolute joy in Kari's he knew it was for real. "Well Kari-san, I wish you two the best."

"You're not..."

"No. Just remember I made a promise to keep you safe, so I'll still be watching over you." He kissed her hand and nodded to Davis before walking away.

"Wait! What did you want to tell me?"

"Never mind. It's not important anymore."

***

Wow. Davis thought. I never thought that Kari would ask me out. What kind of a twist is that? And TP just walking away like that. I never thought he'd just fold, but I guess he never had a chance once Kari succumbed to my manly charms.

"Penny for your thoughts Davis kun?" Kari asked sweetly.

"I just can't believe how much my life has changed in so short a period of time. Did he say anything?"

"Not really. Just said that he wished us the best and that he'd keep his promise to protect me."

"I really thought he'd put up more of a fight."

"Let's stop talking about him, ai." Kari whined. "Now that I've got you I don't ever wanna let you go."

"And you never have to."

***

TK was sloughing home through the snow when Tai and Matt stopped him. "Is it true?"

"Matt look at his face. How can he look that grim and it not be true?" Tai said as TK pushed passed them.

"TK how could you just let him take her from you like that?"

"I never owned her Matt. She made her choice, and it wasn't me."

"But-" Tai began.

"You had to been there to see the look of absolute joy on her face, you two. Then maybe you'd understand why I had to let her go. Now if you don't mind my tears are starting to freeze." Without waiting for a response he pushed past the older teens and trudged homeward. "Just leave Kari alone."

***

"Mom, where's Kari?" Tai asked slipping out his wrap. "We need to talk now."

"On the phone with Davis."

Not for long. Tai thought unplugging the phone.

"NOOOOOO!" Kari screamed and burst out of the room.

"Well, since your done on the phone, let's talk."

"Put... it... back."

"Sit down." Tai said calmly pointing to the couch. When she failed to comply he barked. "NOW!"

"Oh dear. I'm out of... something. Guess I better run to the store." Mrs. Kamiya said grabbing her coat and shoes. "Don't touch anything while I'm gone." She said hurrying to get clear of the war zone.

Each of the Kamiya children stared at the other. One thing they had in common was a will of iron and they brought that to bear now. "Sit down." Tai repeated.

"Plug it back in or I will kill you where you stand."

Tai stood, coolly defiant until Kari threw herself onto the couch and phone at her brother. He caught it, silenced the ringer and hung it up before plugging the phone back in. "I thought you liked TK."

"So he put you up to this?"

"No, actually. He told me and Matt to leave you alone, but when have we ever done what we're told. Now what about TK?"

"Schoolgirl crush. I love Davis and I was in the middle of telling him that when you pulled my plug."

"Why the sudden turn around?"

"Look I don't have to explain myself to you. I love Davis, all right?" Tai looked into his sister's crimson eyes and saw only love and happiness.

Now I know why TK gave up. "All right, but if ever does anything to hurt you, let me know."

"You'll be third to know." Tai opened his mouth but Kari raised her hand. "I'll be first. Then I'm telling TK. He's still my best friend and he still believes in that silly promise he made when he was eight. Once he gets me back here the two of you can have at Davis."

"Okay." Tai said tossing her the phone. "Call your boyfriend Davis." He swallowed as though he hard time getting the words out, then turned and headed out.

***

The next day Davis came in with a shiner, split lip and swelled jaw. The day after Matt went into traction and the entire issue was discreetly forgotten.

Until about two weeks later, when Davis came barreling into the boys restroom as TK was washing his hands. "Hi Davis."

Davis jumped at his name until he realized who had spoken. "TK! Please! You gotta help me! She's crazy!"

"Slow down. Does this have something to do with Kari?"

"Yeah! She's totally lost it. She floods my answering machine, my voicemail, my mailbox, my locker, even my backpack!"

"Yeah, keep going." Takeru was sincerely interested in Kari's problem but so far it sounded like a simple case of obsession.

"Dude this isn't the normal Kari, man. She won't even let me talk to Yolie for homework help. She accused me of fucking my own sister!"

"Okay, this is weird. Did anything come of that, by the way?"

"No, but it almost did. My mom came home before they went at it. Now Jun's afraid to leave the house any more than she has to."

I guess she won't be lurking around Matt's concerts for a while. TK thought hiding his grin. "Davis, I hate to say this, but she's acting more than a little like you."

"No she's not! I was never like that." TK just stood there as he mentally counted down. "Was I?"

"Yes you were Davis. You were totally obsessive about just getting a date with Kari. Now she, well I guess she sees you as 'her guy' and has gone overprotective on you."

"Does she do that a lot?"

"I don't know but it could be genetic. Tai can go ballistic about her."

"Say, I know you're into her. You wanna take her off my hands for a little while?"

"Sorry Davis, it doesn't work that way. See, I'm not just 'into her.' I love Kari."

"Huh? Then why'd you just let her go?"

"It's not like I owned her Davis. She's her own person, free to love whoever she wants."

"Then why in the heck does she love me and how can I make her stop?"

"You can't make someone stop loving you Davis, not if they truly love you. I looked in Kari's eyes when she told me and you make her happy."

"That doesn't make any sense! Why would you let me have the woman you love without a fight? Because I make her happy?"

"That's exactly why, Davis."

"Man I'd have been fighting tooth and nail."

"That's not the way it works Davis. When you love someone, their happiness comes before your own."

"Kari used to be happy with you, but now she's happy with me." Davis said slowly understanding.

"There's hope for you yet, Davis." TK said slipping towards the door of the men's room.

"But wait! What about Kari?"

"I'll tell you like this. One, crazy as this may sound, this how she shows that she loves you, so you might want to show her that you love her too. Two, try to negotiate with her. Despite how maniacal she seems right now, reasonable old Kari is still in there somewhere, and you just have to try and reach her. Three, you might want to think about getting her something nice. Christmas is right around the corner."

***

And indeed it was. TK attended the annual Chosen Christmas party but left early as Kari and Davis hung all over each other. Before he left Davis thanked him profusely and Kari refused to let him leave until she caught him under the mistletoe. He gave her a chaste kiss first on the cheek and then on her hand before vanishing into the wintry night.

"I hope you're not trying to freeze yourself to death." Yolie said as she found TK sitting on a bench.

"Not to death." He said. "Just numb enough that I don't feel my heart breaking for a while."

"I know how you feel. I love Davis and I'd do anything for him, even if that means letting him go."

"How long until the novelty wears off, do ya think?" The blonde asked.

"I dunno, but I don't think he'll honestly admit it. He's scared stiff of Kari."

TK was hard pressed not to laugh at that. In fact moments later he burst out laughing as Yolie glared at him sternly as he started miming a diminutive Kari pounding on an imaginary Davis until she lost it herself. The two fell off the bench and rolled together in the snow laughing madly.

"Oh that felt good." TK sighed in exhaustion.

"Look." Yolie said. "A shooting star. Make a wish."

TK watched as the white streak coasted through the cool night air. "I wish for Kari to be happy and safe for the rest of her life."

"TK! You're not supposed say it out loud! But since you shared your wish with me..." Yolie glanced where the star had last been. "I wish for everything to work out in the end."

***

Kari and Davis were nestled in each others arms on the balcony. "Shooting star, ai." Davis whispered. "Make a wish."

"That's easy. I wish for my hearts desire, and I know that'll come true."

"Well then..." Davis glanced back over his shoulder mentally seeing TK kissing Kari first on the cheek then the hand. He doesn't just love her. He adores her. The brunette thought.

"Davis kun, make a wish."

"I wish for someone for TK to love."

"That's a funny wish, ai."

"Did you ever think about TK's feelings when we hooked up?"

"A little. He said he was okay with it and he didn't act like there was anything wrong. Don't get me wrong Davis kun, TK is my best friend, but I just don't love him."

"He loves you, very much." Davis said as Kari looked on in shock. "We talked once and he said when he saw the happiness in your eyes, he let you go even though it broke his heart. He's really a good guy and I should have butted out a long time ago. But now we're together and he's bowed out. That doesn't mean he doesn't deserve someone to love."

Kari was pensive and silent in her love's arms lost in thought.

***

A formless voice chuckled merrily. "I think they've got it. I think they understand."

"Now Cupid was all this really necessary?"

"Actually mother, it was. They all wanted love, but they had no idea what love is. And this was so much more subtle than my usual arrow through the heart bit. It was refreshing and much more lasting."

"So what shall you do now?" Aphrodite asked.

"Grant their wishes, again. TK wished for the courage to tell Kari of his love. It didn't take much, just a little extra confidence. I had no idea her refusal would take that much wind out of his sails."

"True." The Goddess of love said. "But he alone held the clearest understanding of love. He knew what he was sacrificing."

"And more importantly, why he was doing it." Cupid said. "Even now, he wishes not for himself, but for the girl, Kari. Happiness and protection all of her days."

"And Kari herself." Aphrodite mused. "She wished that her other suitor, Davis, could know how he made her feel."

"A little obsession hasn't killed anyone in a few centuries." Cupid chuckled. "And now she's given herself the best way out, by wishing for her hearts desire."

"Poor confused girl. Right now she thinks that's Davis."

"Ah now there's the one that's changed the most. His first wish was for Kari's love, which I granted him, along with her obsession."

"Yes. He tried to give her to TK but the blonde explained the nature of love to him."

"Yes mother, but it didn't quite make it all the way home. To him all TK had told him were abstracts, but tonight a single mistletoe kiss changed all that. His second wish shows that. He knew Kari planned to be with him forever, so he asked for someone for TK to love."

"And that leaves the girl, Yolie. "

"Such a charming girl." Cupid chuckled. "It was her first wish that captured my attention. Understanding, a rare thing that bonded all the others together."

"Not unlike their soul bonds. TK and Kari have a strong chain between them, but there is a fainter, neglected chain."

"Fear not mother. The girl wished that all be right in the end, and I will see that it is. But look, dawn brings new loves."

***

Dawn found Kari praying to the porcelain throne.

"Too much eggnog?" Tai asked.

"More like too much Davis. How could I have gone out with him for three weeks, Tai? I barely tolerate him as a friend. It's like I just woke up from a bad dream."

"At least you didn't sleep with him." Tai said with a shudder. Kari twitched briefly before plunging her head into the toilette again.

"I hate you." She growled as the phone started to ring. "Moshi moshi."

"Hi Kari. It's Davis. I've got something important to tell you and if I try this face to face I'll lose my nerve. Don't say anything until I'm done. I thought I loved you, but when I woke this morning I realized I was wrong. We don't belong together. I know that as clearly as I know my own name. I can't say for sure that you're meant to be with TK but last night you wished for your heart's desire and I hope you find you find it. Farewell Kari. I wish you happiness."

"Davis wait!" Kari cried. "Yolie was really into you for the longest time, but you never seemed to notice her. You might want to do something to change that," She paused a moment then said something he would never hear from her again. "Davis kun."

"Thank you, Kari chan." He whispered as he hung up.

"You okay imoto chan?" Tai asked. "You look like you just got hit by a bus."

"Davis and I just broke up." She said. "Davis and I just broke up!" She repeated as the significance sank in. "Tai do you realize what this means?" She said twirling around with her brother. "I'm free! I'm single! I'm back on the market! I-" She broke off and ran to get changed. A moment later she grabbed her coat. "I gotta get to TK's!"

Tai chuckled at his sister's antics. "Merry Christmas Sis." He said quietly.

***

Kari knocked lightly on TK's door and waited. She was more than a little surprised when Yolie opened the door. "Oh Kari. Hi."

Don't flip. Kari thought. There's got to be a reason for this.

"Hi Kari." TK said as Yolie pulled on her coat and shoes. "Yolie was just leaving."

"See ya in school." Yolie said, before turning to Kari. "We're just friends who didn't want to spend Christmas Eve alone."

"I don't think either of you will be spending any more holidays alone. Merry Christmas Yolie."

Yolie looked at Kari as though seeing a new person. "Merry Christmas Kari, and you too TK."

"So." TK said as she left.

"So." Kari said. "You wanted to tell me something."

"Doesn't really matter now that your with Davis."

"Funny you should mention him. After I finished throwing up, he called and gave me a great gift. He broke up with me."

"So why'd you come here?" TK asked

"You know why. I finally came to my senses. And I wanted to ask you... if you love me as much as I love you."

In response the young girl got a soul melting kiss. This is it. This is where my heart belongs.

***

Yolie was on her way home trying to come up with a suitable explanation when a snowball hit her in the back.

"Whoever threw that had better have good life insurance."

"Yo-yo chan, I'm hurt." Davis said tossing her a snowball and standing wide open. "Go ahead."

The violet haired girl playfully lobbed the snowball hitting Davis squarely in the chest. "So where's Kari?"

"I woke up this morning and let her go. I knew I just wanted her kinda like a prize and that's not what loves all about. I realized something else, Yo-yo chan. I like you, as more than a friend."

Yolie wrapped her arms around him and kissed him gently. "What took you so long, Davis kun?"

"Would you like to spend Christmas with me and my family? It's the one day of the year when they actually seem normal."

"Only half the day, ai. Then you're coming to Christmas dinner with me and my family."

Davis agreed and lead the way.

***

Cupid laughed. "To paraphrase my old friend Puck, 'Or else the sprite a liar call, Merry Christmas, one and all.'"
