Author's Note: Digimon is copyrighted by Bandai and Toei Animation. All other characters are probably copyrighted by me. I am copyrighted by Nintendo, but that has nothing to do with the story. This fanfic is set within a completely different dimension from any of the TV shows or comics and features a lot of death, so if you're squeamish about that sort of thing, leave now. Chapter 7: Delve into the Past
The small boy looked around him. His clothes were smudged black with dirt and soot. Hair was a mess of uncombed brown, darker than his eyes. He was young but the fighting was anything but recent. As far as he could remember, there had always been war.
"Kai!" called out a voice from the shadows, from within the ruins of once had been a great city, razed to the ground by constant bombing.
The boy turned round and saw his mother picking her way across the rubble towards him. A small smile spread across his face, and he made his way towards her, ignoring all the destruction around him.
"I'm so sorry," he apologised, as he rushed up to her and hugged her. "I'm so sorry."
"That's okay, Kai," she murmured quietly in a reassuring tone of voice. "It's not your fault. It's not your fault."
Tears streamed down his cheeks. How could he have been so foolish?
"I'm so sorry," he cried miserably. "I know I should have been looking after him more carefully, but..." He trailed off and broke down into tears. 'He's gone now. You'll never see him again.'
Looking down at the boy, she knew he had seen enough carnage. There was no need to tell him off. He had learnt his lesson, she knew that. 'Now I have only one son left, and I mustn't lose him too' she thought miserably.
"Kai, stop crying," she said sternly. "Kai..."

Opening his eyes, Kai groggily woke up.
"You okay?" asked a voice that he recognised.
"Fumiko?" exclaimed Kai, as he looked up and saw her face looking down at him. He noticed there was a faint smile on her face. "Where's the others? Where am I?" he asked, as he bolted upright.
"Whoa there," said Fumiko, as she tried to push him back down. "Ease up. You've got to take it easy. You took quite a beating back at Aldershot, you know that?"
"That's right," agreed another voice. Cody walked into the room with a glass of water in his hand. "Here, I thought you'd want something to drink." He handed the glass over to the brown-haired kid.
Kai took it gratefully into his hands, thanking Cody. He practically drained the glass dry, before handing it back.
"Thanks, I needed that," he sighed. Thoughts ran through his mind. "What happened? How did we get here?"
"Cody protected you guys from Reisz," replied Fumiko quietly, as she stood up from the bed. She could remember the escape. Having to steal another military jeep. It had been an intense escape, but they had managed to pull it off. "If it weren't for him, you'd be locked up in a military prison cell by now." Fumiko looked at Cody and smiled, getting a smile back in reply. "It's a miracle how we managed to escape, but we managed to do it. Thanks to the Channel Tunnel, we crossed over into France and from there into Belgium."
The first thing that came to Kai's mind was chocolate, for some strange reason. The next thing that came to his mind was Europe.
"So, we're not in England anymore?" he asked her.
Cody shook his head in reply.
"Nope," he replied. "You're in good old Belgium. Brugge to be exact."
"How are the others?" asked Kai insistently.
"They're fine, but still sleeping," replied Fumiko.

Captain Reisz in human form and in full military uniform, looked out of the window of his fighter jet. It was actually a Mech, a new model capable of becoming a fighter jet and travelling faster than the old Mechs. That didn't matter to him. 'Failure.' It shamed him to think that he had been defeated by that Champion-level DigiAnthrope. 'I must have done something wrong,' he thought to himself. 'There must have been a flaw in my thinking, a flaw in my actions.'
Forcefully, he stopped himself from thinking about it. Concentrate on the task at hand. Escort the jet booster across the skies to L4. Situated in West China, L4 was one of four recognised major bases where satellites and rockets are launched into space. Reisz thought of the others. L1 in Pecunia, L2 in Europe and L3 in Russia.
"Captain Reisz," crackled a voice over his com-link.
"What is it?" he asked in a tone of voice that suggested he was resentful of the voice that had interruped his thoughts.
"Sir, we've received orders from His Excellency," replied the voice. "We are to divert to L3 immediately."
Reisz frowned.
"Fly to L3?" he said. 'I don't remember Kaplan being so indecisive' he thought to himself. 'Something is very wrong.' There were several options open to him, and he wondered which he should take. "I'm going to fly ahead to L3 and find out what's going on. You take your time." He fired his boosters and his Mech flew ahead of the rest of the units. 'Something is wrong, I can sense it.'

He sat bolt upright, sweating. Looked around him. Takeru sighed. He was safe and in some kind of hospital. Had it all been a horrible dream? He wasn't sure, as he slumped back down into bed, hand on forehead. The Third World War had been horrific, so horrific in fact, that he had been brought up by total strangers, never having known his real parents. The foster parents themselves had been killed, leaving Takeru all alone.
'Don't think about that!' he told himself mentally. 'You'll go crazy if you keep reliving that event over and over again.'
"Takeru!" exclaimed a voice from the doorway.
"Paul?" he exclaimed in surprise, as he looked up. Well, it seems that not all of it had been a dream. "How'd we get here?" he asked the blonde man.
"It's a long story," he replied, as he crossed over to the bed, pulled up a chair and sat down in one fluid movement. "Let's just say that we've got good friends looking after us. So, how are you? Feeling better?"
Takeru nodded in reply.
"Much better, thanks," he thanked Paul. "Where are we, exactly?" he asked Paul.
"Brugge," replied Paul with a sigh. He had memories of Brugge, fighting there against the French Army. Not the best of memories, he supposed, but, memories none the less. "That's in Belgium, by the way." He looked at Takeru more carefully, and began to wonder. "You sure you okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I'm fine," replied Takeru as convincingly as possible. He shook too much, however, to be able to convince the blonde-haired ex-soldier. "It's just, I had a nightmare, that's all." He lowered his head and looked down at the sheets that covered himself. 'One about my past' he added mentally. He shivered as fragments of memories drifted back.
Paul wondered whether he should push on with the subject or just leave the subject well alone.
"Well, as long as you're okay," he said in a tone of voice that suggested he knew better. "You can talk to me about anything, Takeru. Remember that, okay?"
"Yeah," replied Takeru with a nod of his head.

Colonel Oikawa smiled, as he looked at the new Mech. White and large. Menacing yet graceful.
"It's perfect," he sighed contentedly. Already, it had undergone testing, but he needed a real enemy to test it against. He turned round to face the soldiers standing behind him, the soldiers wearing green uniforms similar to the ones the old UN Organisation used to wear. "Get me Chairman Prince at once! I need to speak to him." He turned back round and smiled at his creation.
"Sir, we've got Chairman Prince online!"
Turning round, Oikawa made his way over to a computer that had the Chairman's face on it.
"Your Grace, it is an honour to see you again," he greeted.
"What is it, Oikawa?" Prince asked the Colonel.
"The Mercury Mechs are complete, Chairman Prince," replied Oikawa with a slight bow of his head. "I've ran several simulation tests on them, and they have passed. However, I need to test them out on real subjects and need authorisation to..."
The image of Chairman Prince held up a hand, and Oikawa stopped talking.
"Real subjects for the Mercuries to fight against, you say?" said Prince calmly, a smile slowly forming on his face. "I am not that keen on giving you real soldiers for the Mercuries to test their fighting skills against. What should something go wrong?" He lowered his hand. "No. I suggest a different approach to this problem."
A frown appeared on Oikawa's pale face.
"A different approach, sir?"
"That's right," confirmed Prince with a slow nod of his head. "I have received reports from the UN Organisation that Dr. Yamaki, a fellow cohort of yours, once worked on a DigiModification Project. Five of her test subjects escaped. These five are DigiAnthropes, like quite a lot of the soldiers in the UN."
"Ah, I see," exclaimed Oikawa with a grin. "These five do not belong to any organisation, do they? However, how shall I find them?"
"Leave that to me, Oikawa," replied Chairman Prince. "I will see to it that your creations get the test they need. If satisfactory, I want them mass produced, got that?"
"Of course, sir," replied Oikawa.

Kai looked out of the window, standing in that gown hospitals force patients to wear. 'How did he digivolve?' he wondered, as he looked out of the window and towards the old-style town. It was a beautiful place, and he hoped that by being there, he hadn't placed its citizens in danger. 'If we can find out how to do that, then there's no way we can be defeated by the UN.'
"Kai, you really got to get back to bed," exclaimed a voice from the doorway.
"Hey, you never stayed in bed when we told you to," retorted Kai.
"Touché," chuckled Paul, as he walked into the room. "You got me there. Still, it is best if you do get back in bed."
A sigh escaped Kai's mouth, as he turned away from the window.
"How do you think Reisz was able to digivolve?" he asked Paul. He had no idea how he knew the term, especially since Digimon cartoons hadn't been shown since 2085 when Toei Animation was bought up.
"I'm not sure," replied Paul, as he helped Kai back in. "All I know is that we've got to try and emulate that. Digivolution is the key to our success against the other DigiAnthropes and more importantly, against the UN." He turned to look at the doorway into the room. "You know, Fumiko told me about something about a D-Power. One of her opponents used something called a D-Power."
"A what now?" asked Kai, a frown appearing on his face. He wasn't sure what this D-Power thing was. It didn't sound very serious either.
"A D-Power," replied Paul for the third time. "It made her opponent unusually fast. We've got to try and emulate these D-Powers too. If we can't digivolve and summon our individual D-Powers, then we're lost."
"I guess you're right, but if we're to do this, I can't stay in bed all day," said Kai, brushing the hair out of his eyes. He had to get it cut sometime. He was beginning to look like Heero from Gundam Wing, and he wasn't sure that was a compliment at that. "I've got to get up and out of here."
"You know you can't do that," sighed Paul. 'Man is this kid stubborn.'
"Just watch me," growled Kai, as he flung the covers off himself and and got back up to his feet. "Get me a change of clothes and let's blow this joint. We're going to train so hard, we'll be digivolving all the time."

To be continued...
