---- Chapter 85: Closing the Gate - Part Three : The Key in the Dark ----

Back on Earth, the one room upon which the world depended upon was blisteringly hot. The
giant, constantly-running server brought heat to the room during the end of April. Spring
was heating into summer, and the lone boy in the room couldn't help but feel annoyed. He,
Frank, placed his feet in ice as he continued typing upon his computers. Through the
monitor, he saw the lines of code that still needed fixing. Another window, though, was
left minimized in the corner.

Frank clicked and brought it up, looking upon it. It was a new program he had written in
his time, and he checked for any crippling bugs through the code. He inspected every bit of
it, trying to find any holes or mistakes in the code. He tried for ten minutes, and in his
fatigue, he deemed it good enough for use. He picked up his microphone and was about to
talk into it.

Then, he heard a loud beep. He suddenly froze with fear. His back-up generator had kicked
in. He looked up at his room lights, which were flickering on and off. "Damn it!" Frank
swore. "What's happening?"

Frank turned to his digital clock, and where the time flickered 12:00. He pulled his feet
from the bucket of ice and stepped outside his room, and he saw to his surprise all the
lights in the house flickering on and off. All throughout the house, the electricity acted
strangely.

The television switched between off and on, and during the times when it was on, only a
single picture appeared. Frank recognized the picture. Syria Mauzel. He suddenly turned
white, realizing what had happened. Virus was gaining power fast, and the effects are being
reflected in the real world.

Frank went to another computer in his house, where he opened up his internet browser. He
saw with surprise the image of Virus on every website he checked. There was no doubt about
it. Virus was trying to break the boundaries of the real world and the Other World,
starting with the internet.

Frank dashed to his computer and picked up the microphone. He typed a command into his
keyboard and yelled, "Davis!" But suddenly, his monitor turned red. All of the windows
disappeared. Virus' image flashed for an instant, and the computer froze. All the blood
flooded from Frank's face. Virus had completely taken over his computer.

***

Virus, within the Grand Cathedral, let out a shrill cry that shook the Heavens. The
split-up Crew, kilometers far above, heard it clearly, the very pillars of celesium shaking
from the impact.

Two figures didn't lose their balance amidst the immense rumbling. Genbu and Anya stood
opposite each other upon a bridge that joined two pillars. Genbu's face, covered in the
shadow of his cloak's hood, twisted into a smile. Anya looked directly at him with sadness.
"Brother," she asked once more, "Won't you tell me why you turned from the world?"

Genbu said nothing. He merely raised the tip of the blade at Anya's neck. With one quick
motion, he dashed forward and thrusted the blade forward.

The blade cut Anya, scratching her on the side of her neck. She didn't move to dodge
Genbu's attack. She stood simply before him, not counterattacking or replying. Genbu said
nothing more, but he pulled back his arm. He held up his blade, ready to slice through his
sister's neck.

"We were never normal, Anya," Genbu said simply. Anya looked up at him. Within the darkness
his cloak provided, she saw the sad glow of one of his red eyes. Genbu simply continued,
"You know what we are. We are monsters, born from a clan of monsters."

"We are not monsters!" Anya cried in reply. "You were never a monster! I was never a
monster!" She looked up at Genbu, pleading with all her heart.

"No," Genbu replied in a low tone. "We are."

With that, his arm swung the blade at Anya's neck. The blade sped at Anya's neck, and bit
into the skin.

The blade then came to a stop, and a sort of metallic clang echoed through the night. Genbu
saw through the cut that Anya had formed a shield of bone under her skin. Genbu pulled back
and said, "You shouldn't do that, Anya. It's painful to tear that bony piece out of your
body."

But before him, Anya did just that. With her hands, she opened the cut in her neck and
reached for the bone plate. With a hard tug and a gigantic scream, she tore the plate out
of her neck. She panted, holding the bloody plate in her hand as her neck quickly healed.
She shouted at Genbu, "This pain is nothing! I can feel the pain in your heart. This pain
is nothing compared to yours!"

Genbu said nothing then. His mind wandered for a bit then as he heard her words. He was
brought back to a time in his past.

***

Genbu remembered to a time before Atma's Ragnarok. He remembered when he and Anya were mere
children in the world of men. He remembered his clan well. He hailed from the Tsukibito [1]
Clan, the race of people said to be descended from the moon to Hokkaido [2].

Time on the moon was different from Earth, it was said. Some always felt the heat of the
sun; some always felt the biting cold of the other side. Time was faster on the moon, even
though its days and nights were eternal. Folk tales told of people who lived their lives in
a month. They grew from infants to elders in four weeks, living on the moon.

Similarly, the Tsukibito Clan carried with them the ability to grow their cells at an
amazingly fast pace. Genbu, then Shinsuke, was as close to his little sister as ever. The
clan had been fading from the world. The old systems of magic and prophecy were quickly
being replaced by the strength of man. The only people the Tsukibito Clan could rely upon
were each other.

Genbu came to remember his friends of the past in the Tsukibito clan. There were the
Tsukida, the Tsukiniwa, and the Tsukishiro families that he saw clearly in his mind. His
eyes were shut then as he recalled them all.

He then recalled the days when the Tsukibito Clan faced its final days. The Great War
between Solarice and Japan spared no one in Hokkaido. The Tsukibito Clan was quickly
drafted for the war, used as soldiers because of their unique and powerful abilities.

But soon enough, by the end of the Great War, only Genbu, Anya, and a handful of their
friends were still alive. There were those who died faster than their wounds could heal
them. There were many experimented upon and torn apart for the government's convenience.

He remembered that he had to protect his little sister throughout the ordeal. Even when
their family disappeared one by one, he always protected her. At one point, his sister had
to protect him. Anya had volunteered to be experimented upon in place of him. "My pain is
nothing compared to yours," she had said when she did that.

Anya miraculously survived that experiment. The survivors were the few who were
experimented upon and survived. Shinsuke and Anya were quickly sent to the frontlines when
Atma held his Ragnarok. Genbu recalled it all, and when he opened his eyes, he returned to
real time.

***

Genbu glared at Anya. "Why do you defend the people who hurt us so much?" asked Genbu.
Anya's eyes narrowed with sadness. "Should we not kill those who kill us? What is wrong
with that?"

"'What's wrong with that?!'" Anya yelled back. "We have these powers not for killing, but
for saving others!"

"You're too optimistic. We have no obligation to protect the weak. You must protect
yourself before your protect others, and that entails removing any threat to your existence
in anyway you choose."

"Brother, please!" Anya cried. Genbu was then silent, seeing the determination build up in
Anya's eyes. She looked at him with loving, yet unwavering eyes. She continued, "That line
of thinking is selfish! Who are we to judge who lives and who dies? So if the few normal
people we have met tormented us, does that mean we eliminate them all? If you continue down
this path, you will indiscriminately kill billions of people!"

Genbu said nothing for a long time. Anya looked straight at her brother, hoping her words
finally had reached him. The two stood there for a long time, thinking amongst themselves.
Finally, Genbu sighed, breaking the silence between the two. His hands reached for his
hood. He said slowly, "So what?"

Anya was completely taken by surprise by Genbu's reaction. She saw Genbu tear off his hood,
and she saw the familiar features of her brother. She saw the spiked blonde hair and the
glowing red eye. She saw one new feature, as well, and nearly lost her breath.

Covering one of his red eyes was the ooze of Virus. His eye glowed underneath the gray
ooze, seeping into his skin and veins. Anya saw the veins that stood tall on the right side
of Genbu's face, and she covered her mouth in horror.

Genbu spoke, "Those billions of people turned their backs on us. They abandoned us in our
time of need. Should we turn around and help them in their own troubles? Should the people
who abandoned us be angry that we'll abandon them? If you ask me, their reasoning is even
more selfish than mine." Anya could find nothing to say about that.

"Are we, the ones given power, supposed to be in exile all our lives?" Anya then opened her
mouth to reply, but Genbu just continued, "You know very well the power we gained in the
Omega Flare. We are immortal. We lost the ability to die, and our bloodline-given powers
were amplified. Are we to yield when given this tremendous power? Does a king throw away
his crown the minute he takes power? No, Anya. This is the simple truth. We are the strong.
The weak, if they do not want us, can disappear."

Anya looked her brother in the eyes then. She came to the conclusion, finally. She could
not be reconciled with her brother. The hate in his heart had completely encompassed him.
Sadly, Anya held up her hand. In an instant, the skin burst open and a blade shot out,
which she grabbed with her other hand. The wound healed in an instant, and she held her
weapon of bone against her brother.

Anya called to her brother, "Genbu. I know you are kind. You have protected me and saved me
during the Great War and the Ragnarok. But now, it's my turn to save you again. I will send
you to the Underworld, free of Virus' control."

"Hm," Genbu said in reply. "So be it. I will have to erase you from memory in order for
Virus to succeed." Anya saw Genbu press his forehead with immense force. She saw in
surprise as the ooze covering his eye push into his skin, the veins on his face standing up
even more.

Genbu pulled his head back as the ooze went deeper into his body. His screams cut into the
darkness, and his body shook all over. Anya then saw Genbu's eyes glow more furiously than
ever. Finally, he stopped shaking.

Genbu lowered his head and looked directly at her. She saw that half of his face became a
shade of black. "Come now, sister," said Genbu. "I have already cut the bonds between us in
my mind. I will fight with all my effort."

Anya nodded, determined as ever. Even if he was on his own, she would still fight. She knew
her brother best, indeed. Only through defeat now will he calm himself. Only if he died
would he be freed of his hate. She knew of the Underworld. She knew that the only people
who lived there were the kind ones. She definitely would send him there to save him.

Genbu and Anya stood opposite each other, crossing their swords as they stood. They both
aimed between each other's eyes as they looked at each other with determined eyes.

Anya then saw Genbu dash forward, first stepping with his right leg. Anya quickly moved her
blade and blocked her right side. There was a clang as bone hit bone. Anya gave a shrill
battle cry as her forearm tore open and a bony spike tore out at Genbu.

The point sped at Genbu, and it struck his chest, tearing his black shirt. The spike
cracked and shattered, for a bony shield had formed just over his chest. Genbu pulled back
his left hand, fingers aimed at Anya.

Quickly, Anya pulled back and retreated as spikes tore from his fingers. They raced at
Anya, forming claws as Genbu dashed after Anya. Genbu held out his hand and let the spikes
shoot forward even more. Anya was faster, grabbing the side of a pillar and swinging to the
other side of the celesium tower.

Then Anya heard the impossible sound. There was the sound of breaking metal. She was taken
aback as the spikes of Genbu tore through her shoulder and left arm. The blood rushed from
her face. 'No... Way!' she screamed in her mind, blood flowing from her wounds. She coughed
out blood and thought in panic, 'His bones can pierce celesium this thick?!'

With a short cry of pain, she pulled herself off of the spike and crawled down the pillar.
She looked up and saw Genbu racing after her, his bloody claws cutting through the
celesium. Anya thought quickly, releasing herself from the pillar and falling towards the
black abyss.

Genbu's claws tore through the spot she was just a second ago. Genbu looked up from the
pillar at Anya, who let out her green aura. She held up her blade and screamed,
"KAMAITACHI!"

Anya swung her blade in the direction of the pillar, and a giant green wave came forth. At
the same time, bones tore from all the parts of her back and cut into the celesium,
trapping Genbu in a sort of cage.

Genbu looked up at the wave, cutting between Anya's bones. It raced quickly at him, and to
defend, he held up his blade against the sharp wave.

His blade was cut in two, and so was he.

In a straight line from shoulder to hip, blood suddenly burst out of Genbu's giant wound.
The wave formed an etch in the side of the celesium pillar, and both of Genbu's pieces fell
to the bottom of Anya's bone cage. Anya tore the bones off her back and climbed on top of
her cage as the wounds healed.

She saw the two pieces of her brother, looking upon them sadly.

Then she saw the head look up at her with a smile. "What are you sad about, Anya?!" Genbu
said with a mocking tone. She was taken by surprise as she saw the giant wound that exposed
his inner organs turn gray. The gray ooze stretched and reached for the lower half of the
body, pulling it towards Genbu. The two pieces were put together, and the giant wound
quickly healed.

Genbu stood upon his feet again, and he looked up at Anya with a smirk. "That won't do,
Anya," Genbu spoke. "You know that we can survive blows like that, but I guess you didn't
expect me to recover so quickly."

Anya quickly leapt off of the cage as a spike tore from Genbu's arm and cut through the air
where she had stood. She leapt back and came to a stop on another pillar, clinging on with
claws. "You know very well, Anya," continued Genbu. "There are only two ways to kill us: by
burning every bit of us, or by cutting our brains."

"I'll show you how impossible it is to beat me," said Genbu. He held his fingers to his
head, looking up at Anya with a smile. He aimed his fingers at his temple, and in a quick
moment, the spikes shot from his fingers and cut into his skin. And the spike shattered.
The spike that could cut through celesium shattered when it tried to cut his skull. "My
skull is thick and impenetrable. It's like an unbreakable turtle shell."

"Now Anya, get serious." From each of Genbu's other fingers, spikes tore out. Genbu looked
up, and he saw that Anya's green aura had bursted out again. She held her arms aimed at
Genbu.

The only chance Anya had, while her brother was trapped in the cage. She cried, "Fall of
the Sky!" Genbu suddenly felt trapped. The air felt heavy and hot. He could hardly breathe.

'What the Hell?!' he thought with surprise. The air then got even heavier. 'She mastered a
difficult technique like this?!' He felt his shoulder twist and dislocate. 'She couldn't
have this much power!' The claws from his fingers twisted and snapped. 'How can the girl I
remember be this powerful? Did she gain this much power on her own in the last century?!'

"Brother," Anya called as she pressed her hands together. Blood flew from every part of
Genbu's crushed body. "During the time alone, I have searched the world for a meaning to my
life. I have met many cruel people, and I descended down your path. However, while you
joined the Nishiten, I joined the Hokuten with other people who have been abandoned. I
found people that I love very much; people who have saved me from the loneliness and the
darkness. But... What has the Nishiten done for you?"

'The Nishiten,' thought Genbu, reflecting on his membership in the clan. He recalled all
the things he did in the clan. Destroying towns, killing others, causing mayhem... He tried
to remember a happy memory made in during his time with the clan. He couldn't find one. He
had joined not to bond with the others, but to kill others. He suddenly was faced with that
fact. 'What have I been doing these past years?'

Anya released her hands, and the pressure around Genbu disappeared. Sweat came from every
pore of Genbu's body. The heat and pressure had been more than he could handle. Anya panted
in exhaustion, feeling sore all over. Her body shook from all the exertion. She felt the
adrenaline pump throughout her blood. She looked down towards her brother, who had stopped
moving. 'Did that reach him?' she asked herself.

Genbu stood within the cage, looking at the darkness far below. 'What have I been doing,
when I haven't been happy at all?' he thought to himself. 'Following this path... It brings
satisfaction, yes. But... I won't be happy.' Genbu looked up from the darkness, being taken
by this epiphany. 'Yes, what good is destroying all of the worthless humans if I won't be
happy anyway?'

Genbu sighed, head lowered towards the darkness. He then looked up at Anya, a genuine smile
on his face. "I see," he said. "I realize your point." Anya's face softened into a smile,
looking at her brother with hope. He was saved, finally. She had opened the door to his
heart.

Tears streamed down her face as she watched her brother climb through the cage and up the
pillar, grabbing onto a bridge and climbing upon it. Anya climbed up her own and leapt onto
the same bridge Genbu stood upon. Genbu's voice then called, "But I can't turn back now. I
must see this path to its conclusion."

Anya smiled and nodded at her brother. "Yeah," she replied. "I'm glad you're finally back,
though." Genbu nodded.

The skin on his palm bulged, and a blade came forth made of his bone. Anya raised her own
blade at Genbu, feeling sweat roll down her face. Genbu raised his blade as well. "Do not
hold back, sister!" Genbu called. "I won't be satisfied with such a weak sister!"

Anya called back, "Same to you!" The two then dashed at each other. Anya saw that Genbu
used his left leg to dash forward. Genbu reached Anya faster than before. Anya moved her
blade to block her left.

The blade cut the right side of her body. It cut through her stomach and struck her spine.
Anya coughed blood, realizing her mistake. She anticipated his technique with only his
footwork, and she read him wrongly. Anya coughed blood.

However, she wouldn't give up. She threw her blade away and grabbed her brother by the
shoulders. With a shout, bones tore from every part of her body. Genbu saw with surprise
the ferocity of the attack, piercing into every part of his body. It cut through his legs
and straight through his arms. The bones pierced his lungs and cut his neck.

With the bones still in him, he saw Anya tear away, the wound in her side spilling blood
all over. He saw Anya flip over him before he could tear all the bones out of him.

Another blade came from Anya's hand, and she thrusted it straight at her brother's head. It
cut through the skin, and to Genbu's surprise, through the brain and stopped at the inside
of his skull. Genbu could only be taken aback for a split second before he died.

Anya saw her brother go limp. She pulled her blade out of her brother, seeing blood and
gray ooze flowing down it. She threw the blade into the darkness below as she saw her
brother.

She had cut through the base of his skull, where it connected with the spine. She had cut
through that small gap and into the brain, and she sighed with happiness as she saw her
brother lying peacefully before her. She smiled, and as carefully as she could, she pulled
out all of her bones from him, throwing them into the darkness.

She turned her brother over, seeing the ooze over his right eye melt and flow down the
bridge with his blood. Genbu's wide open eyes looked up at the dark sky above. Anya smiled,
reaching down and closing his eyes. She held him up and hugged him close to her, tears
pouring from her eyes. She finally set him down on his back.

Her side then burned, the wound as wide as ever. Blood and adrenaline flowed down her side
and stained her torn clothes. She shook and felt weak. She stepped to a pillar and leaned
back on it, sliding down and sitting by it.

Very slowly, her breathing slowing down, she pulled her flare from her pocket and looked at
it for a bit. 'Hopefully, they find me before the flare runs out,' she thought to herself.
She broke the piece, and a very bright light came forth with a hiss. She set the flares
before her and rested her head back.

She shut her eyes and felt happiness wash over her. And then, she died once again.

***

Meanwhile, the Underworld, the Rood Inverse glowed and shook with a new arrival. Light
filled the Underworld as Genbu stepped onto the ground for the first time. He looked about,
seeing the curious buildings and darkness.

He heard footsteps approaching. It was Botan. Botan greeted him and said, "Welcome,
Shinsuke-san!"

Genbu looked at her in surprise. "How do you know me?"

"We've been waiting for a long time," Botan replied. "Come, you've had a hard life. You
need to rest." Botan urged him on, stepping down the street towards empty houses. Genbu
smiled, feeling at peace. He followed the escort to his new home, feeling that he could
finally rest.

***

Elsewhere, TM dashed down the pillars. He held his Izanagi tight, racing down towards the
darkness before him. He felt the dangerous power of Virus far before him. He heard the
screams of Mauzel's shrill voice. His resolve solidified further, and he hastened his dash
towards Virus.

He passed bridges and pillars as he raced down towards the core. He dashed past Suzaku,
standing upon a bridge. "Yo," TM heard with surprise.

He skidded to a stop, using his chakra to stick to the pillar. He looked up at the bridge
above him, seeing Suzaku standing there, smiling. "Where are you going, boy?" he heard
Suzaku ask.

TM grinned as he looked up at Suzaku. "I'm going to save Cindy!" he yelled back.

Suzaku leapt off of the bridge and onto one closer to TM. He looked at TM with a smirk.
"No, you aren't," Suzaku simply replied.

TM leapt up from the side of the pillar and landed upon the bridge. He and Suzaku looked
straight at each other. "I will go down there and reach Cindy. You won't stop me."

Suzaku's eyes narrowed into a glare. "I can not allow that," he replied. "You are getting
into matters too big for you, Boy. I am the leader of the Nishiten, moreover of the Sushin,
the Four Gods. When I say you won't make it, you will not."

"Heh," TM just uttered as he aimed the Izanagi at Suzaku. "Funny, here I thought I wouldn't
be lectured by an old foggy."

TM suddenly leapt forward, planning a slash from his Izanagi at Suzaku. He dashed across
the bridge, running straight at Suzaku. He closed the distance and slashed at Suzaku. He
cut Suzaku's side, tearing the cloak and Suzaku's shirt.

Before TM knew it, Suzaku's blades came from his palms and struck the Izanagi out of his
hand. He saw Suzaku throw it into the Izanagi at a pillar down below. The blade embedded
itself in the side of the pillar.

TM saw Suzaku slash at him with the two blades in his palm. TM ducked and dodged the
blades, but suddenly flew back from a kick by Suzaku, slamming into the pillar on the other
side of the bridge. TM coughed in pain, falling to his knees.

Suzaku glared forward at TM. "You can never reach me," said Suzaku. Suzaku then tore off
his cloak and tossed it away. Suzaku showed the ooze connected to his right arm, throbbing
and pulsing. "Ever," Suzaku added.

Suzaku aimed his left blade at TM, still down. He prepared to tear TM apart, but suddenly,
TM's giant aura shook the bridge and pillar. A blue light came from him as he got up and
drew the blade from his side: Hiko's broken blade.

Suzaku was taken aback when TM raised the blade at him and gave a battle cry. With great
speed, water was pulled from the air and formed a blade that cut through Suzaku's shoulder.
Suzaku was taken by surprise with the attack.

Suzaku muttered, "That can't be..." He shook all over, realizing he would have trouble. He
should have been fire still! Now that he was water, everything changed!

TM looked up at Suzaku, his face set in a glare. His eyes were set in a determined glare.
His red Sharingan eyes were aimed at Suzaku, not wavering one bit. "Suzaku!" he yelled.
"It's time to die!"

Suzaku grit his teeth and pulled away. "Yes!" he shouted back. "And you will be the first
to go!"

The two readied their weapons, glaring at each other. TM's gigantic blue aura washed over
the area like a waterfall, and Suzaku simply stood and got into his battle stance. The two
faced each other, preparing for a long, hard battle.
