---- Chapter 91: Closing the Gate - Part Nine : The Final Gate ----

Noon on the final day was fast approaching, and with thirty minutes away from that time,
Kensou and Kino reached the Core with the Trinity. They were amazed to see the many
buildings, crafted of stone. The paved streets were a symbol of ancient times, but what
amazed them most were the deceptively thin pillars sprouting from all over the ground, each
carrying an immense weight upon it.

Kensou looked about in amazement at the towers above him and the stone temples before him.
"What is this place...?" he could only utter. There was a somewhat nostalgic feeling in the
air, but he could not remember what it was.

The eyes of the Trinity flashed for a bit. Superego replied, "This looks to be the
legendary City of the Gods."

Id crassly added, "Those ancient legends were some part true. The legends state that the
Gods used to live here before Mauzel came and created the world above it."

"Rantmon created the Gods, while Mauzel created the followers," said Ego as it supported
the Giga Canon upon his shoulder. "This is the place of the beginning. Virus apparently
plans it to also be the place of the end."

"That bastard," muttered Kino. "Is there anything here?"

"There," the three said at once, pointing to the tallest building. "At that cathedral,
there are two living beings, one of them being Mauzel." Their eyes flashed again. "At that
smaller building, it appears that Cindy and Daedalus are there."

Kino and Kensou looked upon the two buildings. Kino muttered, "Who's the unknown?" The
Trinity were unable to determine it.

Kensou suddenly remembered the feeling. It was a very faint scent. White plums. The perfume
of his master's dead wife... Kensou's eyes narrowed. "It's my master," he said plainly.
Kino looked upon him in surprise. Kensou turned back to him. "I will meet my master.
Please, take care of Cindy." Kino nodded, and Kensou dashed towards the cathedral.

Kino sighed there with the Trinity. "Student meets master again, huh?" he muttered. He then
turned to the Trinity. "Come," he ordered. "Let's save Cindy." The three nodded, except for
Superego. Kino turned to the android.

"Something's falling," stated the machine. The others turned to it.

"It's TM!" yelled Id.

Kino turned to it in surprise. "How far is he?!" he yelled.

"One hundred kilometers," Ego replied.

"Damn it!" swore Kino. He hoped the kid would be okay. Still, with much to do, he said,
"I'll trust him to survive. Let's go." The three nodded. They chased after Kino as he
dashed towards the Cathedral.

***

Kensou saw the Grand Cathedral looming before him, certainly massive to an absolutely
incredible scale. It was larger and more grand than any building he had seen before, save,
perhaps, for the Capitol Building at Solarice or Century City.

Kensou saw the carefully laid stone bricks and the engraved Rood Inverse, made of stained
glass, far above the giant doors. The building was a work of art, supported by many
powerful and tall pillars. He came to the door, shaking at the prospect of meeting his
master again. Still, he gulped and shoved open the door.

He saw Virus and Mauzel before him, opposite to the double doors, opened just a crack. He
slipped through and shut the door behind him, looking in surprise at the Master of the
world, Mauzel, lying in the sea of Virus' ooze. She noticed him, too.

Mauzel smiled. "Kensou Mishima, is it not?" came her sweet and pure voice. "Have you come
for me?"

Kensou suddenly felt the immense aura to the side of the room. One the side of the hall of
the cathedral, he saw a single door. Ignoring Mauzel, he slowly stepped to the door and
shoved it open.

He nearly choked to see the chained up master. He saw the various chains attached to the
shackles holding his arms and legs, tying him to heavy balls of metal. All over the chains,
paper seals stuck to chains, making it further impossible to escape. Susanou looked up at
Kensou.

In the pale light of the room, Kensou was still able to discern his master's cool gray eyes
and his pure white beard that fell straight down. His master had apparently become bald,
but that did not diminish the power of his eyes, looking at him with almost demonic
stillness. The many wrinkles in his master's forehead and cheeks did little to diminish the
power that was Chikara Ouza the 17th, master of the Nidachi Nitou Ryuu and teacher of
Kensou Mishima. Kensou did not yet know of his second name, Susanou.

"We meet again, Kensou," Susanou said simply.

Kensou was too stunned to speak. He had known he'd meet his master, yes, but he never
thought he'd see his master so. Kensou took the time to calm himself. With determined eyes,
he looked again upon his master. "Master," he said, "What is this?!"

"We haven't talked for a long time," his master simply continued. "I wish we could spar."

"Master!" yelled Kensou. "I need to know what this is about?! Why did you do this?! Why did
you betray me and the world?!"

There was a long silence. His master looked up at him with narrow eyes. Kensou suddenly
froze in fear. "Please release me from my shackles," Susanou simply commanded. Kensou grit
his teeth, and drawing the first blade of the nidachi, he cut apart the seals and chains
that bound Susanou to the floor.

"Master!" shouted Kensou as Susanou got to his feet, rubbing his wrists. "Please, tell me!"

Susanou ignored his requests. All he said was, "Follow me." Susanou stepped away, towards a
set of stairs in the back of the room. Kensou reluctantly followed. They climbed up the
spiraling staircase, and slowly, Kensou saw the black sky again. They stopped upon a large
balcony high above the ground, where nearly all of the City of the Gods was visible. There
was a long silence as Kensou became impatient.

Susanou sighed. Kensou saw in surprise as his master turned his back to him. "You still
have much to learn, Kensou," finally stated Susanou. "I heard you mastered the succession
technique, Keiji Kenbu." Kensou said nothing in reply. Susanou turned and faced his
student. "However, you are too forgiving!"

Kensou was taken aback to see his master's harshness. He saw Susanou pick up a weapon from
the corner of the room, and he saw it was another nidachi. "Kensou, do you know why you
were taught the Nidachi Nitou Ryuu?" his master asked as he unsheathed the first blade.

"It is because of my father," replied Kensou, "who insisted for me to protect myself."

"Have you ever questioned that rationale?" his master asked. Kensou suddenly realized the
folly of believing that so easily. "Yes, why would you need to protect yourself when your
father is the President of Terra? That reason was a lie. Your father devised it as a reason
to get you out of the capitol."

Kensou wondered why his father would want to do that. "Did it ever occur to you, that when
you should be educated to become the leader of Terra, you were instead isolated in my
training?" asked Susanou. "For five years, it has never occurred to you?" Kensou suddenly
realized the hints he had failed to see.

Suddenly, he remembered Kino's words after he learned the succession technique.
"Ex-president, Mishima the Fourth, your father, spread the Plague across the world," Kino
had told him.

"That was when he spread the Plague!" Kensou exclaimed with sudden realization. Susanou
nodded.

"I have taught you, Kensou, that all life is interconnected," Susanou explained. "The
actions of one life has effects on everything, no matter how small or large. A butterfly
flapping its wings in the Red Mountains can affect the weather in Solarice. Your father
failed to consider such a thing when he spread the plague that killed my family."

Kensou's eyes widened in surprise as he heard those words.

"When I heard what had happened to my family, I was furious," explained Susanou. "Your
father used me as a way to save you when he killed my family. The best way to repay him, of
course, was to make you master the Nidachi Nitou Ryuu, which takes five years. That caused
a scandal, with everyone asking where you were. He was ruined because of it. It was then, I
learned, that he found Virus."

Kensou never realized so much had happened during his training. His father had never
mentioned it; he hardly even spoke to his father. Even after his master turned him loose,
no one had told him a thing about the scandals. The hole of Terran politics during those
five years were finally filled.

Kensou's eyes widened in surprise as he saw Susanou rip off the sleeve of his right arm,
revealing the large veins and black skin of those possessed by Virus. "How fitting," said
Susanou, "that your father and I would both turn to the same source of power. I let you
free because I had found Virus and the Sushin. They made me see my mistakes. I had been
complacent for too long. I had to kill your father. During that year between setting you
free and his death, I worked with the Nishiten to plan a way to kill your father."

"It's a shame that Kino Tsumuji got to him first, but by then, I no longer cared," said
Susanou. Kensou looked at his master in utter disbelief as he continued, "Virus' power
perfectly compliments the Nidachi Nitou Ryuu. Every attack of the Nidachi Nitou Ryuu is
further strengthened by the power that Virus gives. With his power, my Keiji Kenbu was able
to make storms, thus I was called Susanou, god of the storms."

***

Kino and the Trinity quickly reached the small building beside the Grand Cathedral, where
the Trinity had concluded was where Daedalus and Cindy where. He saw the wooden door
barring him entrance, and with great power, he kicked down the door.

A shot suddenly exploded through the silent area, and Kino flew back, shirt torn open. The
Trinity saw in surprise that Kino had been hit with a shotgun slug, flying back with great
speed and crashing into the wall of the Cathedral. He coughed blood and was frozen in
surprise.

There was Daedalus, holding a shotgun in one hand. "Well, well," said Daedalus. "I expected
to catch some fish, just not someone this big!" Daedalus laughed as he saw Kino, sprawled
on the floor in immense pain. "You think you can defeat me so easily, fool? I knew you were
coming a mile back from your heat. You underestimated me!" Daedalus pointed to a place to
the side, where a giant radar screen of sorts lay. "But, seeing as you are dead, I might as
well continue with breaking down this girl's soul-"

Kino suddenly got to his feet, and Daedalus was taken aback. "You survived a shotgun
slug?!" he yelled in surprise.

Kino tore his shirt open, revealing the armor underneath, shining in the light. "Don't
think I'm so stupid to run into a trap unprotected." As if on cue, the roof of the building
was torn off and thrown away. Daedalus glimpsed with disbelief the Trinity standing above
him.

"You..." began Daedalus. "You used up all those tax dollars FOR THAT?!" Daedalus screamed
it mockingly. Kino looked at him with narrow eyes. Daedalus gave a shrill laugh and said
with pride, "See all these inventions?! I made all of these myself from spare parts of the
ATAF! This is true genius!"

There suddenly was a bullet in Daedalus' leg. Daedalus screamed in pain. Kino sighed and
said, "You can't be a 'true genius', because then what would they call people like me?"

***

Kensou stood, frozen in apprehension to fight. Susanou raised his blade at him and called,
"Now, face my Kusanagi no Tsurugi[1]. I want to see how well you have fared. This is my
final lesson, so I can impart my legacy to you, Chikara Ouza the 18th. Hate me. Detest me.
Only then can you defeat me."

Kensou grit his teeth with frustration, unable to raise his blade at his master again. "I
can't," answered Kensou. "I can't hate you."

"Kensou," Susanou sternly began. "I used you. I used you for my own devices. You still can
say you don't hate me? You still trust me? You are a fool!"

Susanou suddenly dashed at Kensou. Quickly, he trusted the blade at Kensou's gut, but he
saw Kensou quickly move and knock the blade away. He suddenly recognized his old nidachi,
used when he was fully human and free of hate. That old self was long dead. "Master,"
Kensou spoke, "True as it is that I was your tool, but I can't hate you."

With strength that surprised his master, Kensou shoved him back and held his nidachi
tightly. "However, if you desire for me to fight, it's the least I could do to repay you
for my father's crimes!"

Kensou reached and unsheathed the other end of his weapon. "Master, I can sympathize with
you," Kensou added. "I have lost my family as well. But I have been saved from the hatred
that possesses you. So, too, will I save you from the darkness."

"Arrogant," Susanou replied as he unsheathed the second blade of his nidachi. "I didn't
teach you so you could spout proud overconfident trash." His blade was sent spinning in his
hands as he dashed at Kensou. "Hinakureken!" he yelled.

Kensou's master's blades suddenly were a blur, moving left and right with seemingly no
pattern. His master was so much more experienced and skilled than he. Nevertheless, Kensou
had learned the weakness of the Hinakureken. With immense speed, he thrusted his blade
straight at Susanou's face. Susanou was quick to knock his nidachi away, but to the man's
surprise, Kensou followed with an upward kick, hitting Susanou's chin with great force.

"Two-step Hinakureken!" yelled Kensou.

Susanou was surprised to have learned that Kensou defeated the Hinakureken. "How did you
learn this?" asked Susanou as he rubbed his chin in pain.

"It occurred to me," said Kensou, "that the purpose of the Hinakureken is to catch your
opponents off-guard with a two-step attack. However, if you could simplify it, you can
effectively catch your opponent off-guard with your own two-step counter, since the
Hinakureken is too broad for counterattacks."

Susanou smiled. "Brilliant," Susanou noted. "You learned the counter on your own.
However..." Susanou lengthened the distance between his feet and quickly reached for his
nidachi. Kensou saw him quickly launch the blade at him in the same movement of the
unsheathing. "Futaya!" yelled Susanou.

Kensou quickly countered, doing the same with his nidachi. "Futaya!" he shouted as well as
he shot it at his master's weapon. Susanou threw the second half of his weapon at Kensou
then, and to his surprise, he saw Kensou not throw his second blade. Gripping his nidachi
tightly, Kensou struck the weapon away as the other half of his weapon hit the other half
of Susanou's. It flew back towards him, and he caught it in his hands.

Kensou dashed at his master, his two weapons lost. "Impressive," Susanou commented as he
heard Kensou yell, "Kamikaze Kenbu!"

Kensou's blades became blurs of slashes, twists, and turns, all aimed at him. Kensou wasn't
holding back at all, despite his words. Before Susanou knew it, slashes riddled his body,
and blood spilled all over the floor. He skidded back as Kensou stood in place, looking at
his master. He saw the ooze rise from the wounds and block it.

Kensou said nothing still. He saw the two weapons to each side of him, and to his master's
surprise, he threw them back to his master. Susanou caught the blades and looked at Kensou.
He sighed, "You are naive, still, Kensou."

"As I said," continued Kensou, "I can not hate you. Since you wanted me to fight you,
doesn't it make sense that you actually fight?"

***

Daedalus felt the pain in his leg, and his hatred for Kino welled up again. Daedalus roared
in anger and pain. "YOU DARE DO THIS?!" screamed Daedalus. "COME OUT, TITANS!"

Suddenly, the ground shook as the roofs of the others buildings tore free. The Trinity
turned and saw other machines tear out of the buildings, just as tall as they were. "Geez,"
muttered Id. "This is an insult."

"We should just eliminate Daedalus," Superego said simply, looking at the man.

Daedalus simply laughed, "Hah! Do that and the girl dies!"

Another gunshot echoed in the area. Kino, this time, was surprised, for a wall of energy
suddenly formed in front of Daedalus. "You fool!" Daedalus said with a smile. "She'll die
now!"

"Don't think that I'm an idiot," Kino said simply. "If you could kill her so easily, why
did you need to kidnap her?"

Daedalus was surprised by Kino's insight, but showed none of it in his face. "Correct you
are," Daedalus said simply. "But you still want to take care of the Titans, Kino!" The many
Titans looked at the Trinity, and the Trinity at them. They were all just basic mecha, eyes
glowing red, with nothing special about them.

Id just sighed, "Tch! This won't be fun for me!" His arm quickly changed into a giant blade
and he slashed one in two. Kino and the other two of the Trinity, though, saw in surprise
the Titan suddenly exploding, tearing Id to pieces.

Daedalus gave another laugh. "Hahahaha! Already, one of them is down?!" The ground shook
again, and Daedalus saw Id return, though. He was completely taken aback. "WHAT THE HELL?!"

"Since you split a little too early," Kino explained, "you never saw what the Trinity are.
You can't destroy nanomachine colonies like that." Daedalus saw in horror the power of the
Trinity as their limbs stretched into weapons. "Destroy them," Kino commanded. The three
nodded and set to work.

***

Susanou's eyes narrowed at his student. "I grow tired of this reunion." Kensou saw Susanou
spread his stance and hold his nidachi tightly, glaring at him. His muscles were tensed as
Kensou recognized the stance- that of the succession technique.

Kensou uttered, "Master, I said I would free you from the darkness. I don't know how to
release you from Virus or what I should do to calm your soul..." Kensou crouched and spread
his arms in the same pose. "I will match your technique as the first step to healing your
soul."

With a scream, Susanou sprang forward at Kensou, and Kensou the same. They screamed at
once, "Keiji Kenbu!" The winds inside the room roared and ruffled the two's clothes and
hair. It was difficult to hear anything in the roar of the room, but Kensou heard several
strange noises in his master's chest. Kensou, though, felt the effects of the Keiji Kenbu
first hand, feeling sudden pains all over his body. He had weakpoints in so many areas!

Still, Kensou didn't let that distract him as he jabbed his two blades through his master's
chest. Susanou stabbed through Kensou's shoulder and barely grazed his cheek. Blood came
from Kensou's cheek wound as he gritted his teeth in pain. Susanou coughed up blood.

"How..." began Susanou. "Can you be so... Strong... Without hatred...?"

Kensou smiled as he pulled the blades from his master's chest. Susanou did the same. "I was
saved from the darkness," said Kensou. "I had hated Kino Tsumuji for what he did to my
father, but I was saved by the Outlaws, who have become my friends. I may have tried to
push them away at first, but they have now become a home to me. Each one of them have
warmed up my soul. SSJ's trust, TM's justice, Amiko's kindness, Davis' tenacity, and
Cindy's friendship- all of it has been engraved into my soul. They have saved me from the
darkness, Master, and I can only hope to have saved yours."

"Tch, you foolish student," yelled Susanou at Kensou. "What did I say just now-" He
suddenly coughed more blood as Kensou rushed to him, dropping his nidachi. Susanou
collapsed on his side, blood flowing from his wounds. The ooze wasn't flowing to block it
this time. "I told you... Hate me... Detest me..."

"I can not, Master," Kensou replied. "You, too, are important to me. I can not let you fall
into the Darkness forever."

Susanou's eyes narrowed as his vision became blurry. "Damned... Unruly... Student..." were
the last words Susanou uttered. He became limp, eyes closed as he lay on his side. Kensou
rolled him to his back, and he smiled. Susanou had died with a smile. Kensou saw that he
had saved his master.

Kensou took off his cloak and covered his master with it, wiping the tears from his eyes.
With that, he headed again for the steps.

***

Kino and Daedalus glared at each other. With the Trinity set to work, leaving the two
alone, Daedalus struggled to think of a way to distract Kino. And that was then he looked
behind and saw the screen by Cindy's seat completely blank. Daedalus smiled from ear to
ear. He looked at Kino with pride.

"It's finished," he said simply. He whistled. Kino was taken aback. Suddenly, several
Titans appeared behind him, and before he could react, he was knocked away and crashed into
the wall of the Cathedral again. The rest of the Titans quickly swarmed the Trinity and
self-destructed, scattering the nanomachines everywhere. It was perfect timing!

Within the core, Daedalus smiled proudly as he watched the screen by Cindy's seat. Cindy
was sweating and panting, but she stopped struggling altogether. He saw nothing but
darkness on the screen, and he couldn't be happier. Every bit of her spirit had been wiped
clean, and she was ready to be given to Virus.

Daedalus called to Virus, "She's ready!" With that, he pulled the headset off of Cindy. He
pushed up Cindy's head and looked straight into her eyes. Her eyes were like they were
glazed over. Not a bit of movement was present within them.

Daedalus smiled as he released her shackles. He grabbed her by the wrist and pulled her to
her feet. The wires fell from all around Cindy, hitting the ground and seat. Daedalus
pulled Cindy forward, out the door, and towards the Grand Cathedral.

He shoved open the doors, Cindy following him complacently. Daedalus looked up at Mauzel
and the ooze around her. "She is ready," announced Daedalus.

Mauzel smiled widely, licking her lips. She held out her arms. "Bring her to me!" she
called.

Suddenly, there was a gigantic crash. Daedalus looked back in astonishment and saw Suzaku
prone on the floor. He looked up above and saw TM sliding down on a track of ice. Suzaku
had crashed into the ground not far from the cathedral. Quickly, Daedalus shoved the door
shut and turned to Mauzel. Mauzel called, "Hurry! Five minutes is needed for the
integration!" Daedalus complied and pulled Cindy forward, racing towards Virus.

[1] Kusanagi no Tsurugi - According to Japanese Shinto mythology, Susanou's sword was
called the Kusanagi no Tsurugi, translated as the "grass-cutting sword".
