It all began on the long trip from Fabul back to the kingdom of Baron. I had my doubts
as always. The difficult journey to confront that man I had always treated as a father, the
man that abandoned me when I questioned him. I had always been a loyal soldier, earning my
rank as Captain with blood, sweat, and tears. Even by his order had I taken up the dark
sword. A sword that every time I used it seemed to drain my humanity from me. I shuddered
every attack I made, every move I parried. Every life I took with it was like it took a
piece of my life with it. So here I am on a ship headed back to the heart of all that is
evil in the world, a place that I had once called home. That was not the only thing that
worried me. Only hours earlier had Golbez, the newest Captain of the Royal Redwings, kidnapped
the woman whom I pledged my love to. A woman that I am going to rescue. Rosa, my dearest Rosa,
she has to be saved from the mouth of the dragon. As I looked down at the blade that lay
against the mast next to me I wish I could just throw it overboard right now. Just to alleviate
that burden that was placed upon me by the only father figure I had ever known. My heart
ached at the betrayal of my best friend, the kidnapping of my love, and the evilness the
king of Baron was plagueing the world with. I cannot help but think I am signing the death
warrent of the young Prince Edward and Yang, the high monk of Fabul, along with the child
summoner Rydia. They came with me on this journey because like me, Rosa had touched a part
of their lives. Even in the short time she spent with each of us, she left a lasting mark,
with her undying love and fearless resolve in the face of danger. She was a couragous and a
faithful individual. I walked to the side of the ship and stared at the deep blue water
below. My past reflected on the calm water, I smiled as I saw the first time I met Rosa.
The warm smile on her face as I help her up after unknowingly knocking her down. She was a
junior white magic apprentice on her way home from school. I was a squire in the service of
the king, quite but determined to make my mark in life. Somehow our paths crossed that clear
summers day in town. I cannot say if it was fated or merely accidental but the moment I saw
her face I was obviously smitten. She was all I could talk about to Kain, I am sure he was
tired of listening about how wonderful she was. I spent the next few months with her by my side,
though only in the friend sort of way. It scared me to be rejected by such a magnificent
creature such as Rosa. I fumbled about like a lovesick fool hoping she wouldnt notice my
affections for her. Now that I look back on it, I am sure it was completely obvious how I felt
for her. The soft giggle she uttered every time I tripped, knocked objects over, or dropped
things. It still rung in my ears, and all I can do is smile.

"Cecil, is something the matter", Rydia inquired in her soft child-like voice.

"Oh, nothing is wrong, why do you asked", I responded, wiping away a small tear that seemed
to have appeared on my cheek.

"Well you have been staring at the water for over an hour, and you're crying on top of
that", she replied with her arms crossed and a worried expression.

"It's nothing really, I am just thinking of Rosa and my time with her that's all", I said as
I patted her on the back.

"Oh well can you tell me more about her", she said smiling.

"Of course I can, would you like me to start at the beginning", I remarked walking back over
to the mast and sitting down.

"I would really enjoy that", she replied eagerly, making her way over, sitting down next to me.

Yang and Edward were not that far away and they turned to listen to our conversation. I spent
the next few hours until nightfall talking about Rosa, my friend Kain, the king of Baron and my
life in the kingdom. It was not that interesting I am sure but they all listened intently
nonetheless. The captains first mate came over and alerted us that our beds had been made and
when we were ready to retire he would show us the way. I helped Rydia stand and followed him below
decks and to our beds. It was obvious that Rydia started to trust me, and somehow looked upon me
as an older brother. Edward and Yang seemed to have seen this also since they left the two beds
furthest to the right empty for us. Rydia still asked me to continue my story about my early life
with Rosa and I talked quietly until she finally dozed off into a quiet slumber. My other two
companions had done the same. I lay in my bed staring up at the ceiling, comforted by the quiet
sounds of their sleeping. I was not really tired at all, the events that were coming up weighed
heavily on my mind and I feared for them. This was my problem and I did not want them to suffer
for my own choice. I slipped out of bed and went back to the upperdeck and leaned against the
side of the ship, again staring at the water, this time lit by the candles that the crew had set
up so they could see what they were doing. Most of them had went to bed, leaving a skeleton crew
on shift at all times in case of emergency. I turned and watched them quietly as they went about
their duties, tieing various objects off, scrubbing the deck and keeping the ship on course.
The hours seemed to melt away, as the sun peeked over the horizon. Somehow I still felt not fatigue
at all. My resolve hardened though, I felt a renewed determination to rescue Rosa. The time I spent
talking to the others about her reminded me of all the wonderful memories I had of her, and
nothing will stop me from making new memories with her. It felt like some of the weight I had on
my shoulders was lifted, and my heart free again. The morning soon crept by and the others came
sluggishly from the lowerdeck and joined me. Edward was still groggy though Yang seemed astonishingly
refreshed. It was probably due to his training as a monk. I had heard of their ability to take a
couple hours of sleep and wake up as if they had a whole nights rest. Rydia on the otherhand was
even more cheerful than she has ever been. She bounced about like a girl possessed. It was nice to
see her acting like the child she was. I felt sorry for being the one to strip her childhood away from
her like that. She should have remained in her village with her mother. Sadly enough, it was my own
selfishness and desire to prove to the king I could be trusted that caused me to slay her mothers
dragon thus slaying her mother in the process. That along with the ring that brought the creatures
that ravaged her village, killing all but Rydia herself. It was a great injustice that I hoped I could
rectify somehow. The captain invited us into his quarters for breakfast. I was reluctant at first but
prodding by Edward and Rydia led me astray. The meal was maginificant, unlike anything I had ever
consumed, even as a Captain in the Royal Air Corp of Baron. I was not very hungry but I ate all that
I could and went back up on deck to continue my self imposed brooding. Rydia joined me but as quiet
company. She said not a word the whole time, almost as if she sensed that I was not in a mood to
converse. I was happy to have someone there with me, even if it was a child. While lost in my thoughts,
I had not noticed that Edward and Yang were already on deck. I peered over my shoulder at them, and
watched them talk quietly to themselves. It was nice to see a friendship blooming between them. Edward
had been alone since I had met him, and he lost his beloved to Golbez's attack on Damcyan Castle. The
afternoon came almost too soon for my taste, as the sun shone high in the sky. The King of Fabul
assured the trip would be a short one, though the time flew by so fast. I was starting to get butterflys
in my stomach as Baron inched closer over the horizon.
The ship suddenly jerked to the left, catching me offguard as I was thrown against the side along
with Rydia. Edward was tossed to the ground at Yang's feet. Again the ship jerked, this time in the
opposite direction. What the devil could be happening? The trip had been smooth up until now. I looked
into the sky as dark storm clouds were collecting above us, but that was to expected, except they
were only above us. The rest of the sky was clear as a piece of blue tapestry. Suddenly a voice rang
out from the Crows Nest directly above us.

"Cap'n there is something directly ahead of us, and it is coming out of the water", the crewman
screamed out loud.

The captain pulled out his long glass scope and looked at the object that seemed to be rise from
the depths of the water. His face went a ghostly white as he dropped the scope to the ground and
uttered a single word, "Leviathyn". I ran to the front of the ship, and was amazed at the sight I
beheld. The creature coming from beneath the waves was huge, easily twice as large as the ship we
were currently passengers on, maybe even three times as large. My god, I could not believe my eyes.
Could this be the legendary ruler of the deep, could this be the God of the Sea, Leviathyn? I could
not wrap my mind around the reason he would choose to attack us, if this was indeed him. He was
supposedly a god of goodness and prosperity. So what would be the purpose behind this attack. The
ship rocked again, only more violently. I slid the edge of the ship and grasped hard to it. Rydia
was not so lucky, she was thrown to the ground and slipped off the ship, barely holding on to the
side. She screamed out loudly, as I heard another voice when the ship rocked again. Edward had
fallen into the raging torent the appeared off to the right of the ship. Yang made his way to his
aid, as I tried to grab Rydia only to watch her slip from my grasp and into the dark water below.
I screamed her name over and over as she vanished under the foamy surface. A loud splash was heard
behind me, I turned and ran to the side only to see Yang disappear under the waves. My heart was
beating so hard it felt as if it would burst through my chest. I screamed their names at the top
of my lungs, tears freely flowing from my eyes, until my voice went hoarse. I fought through the
tears only to see a large shadow appear on the ground near me. My eyes saucered as I looked into
the sky, staring at a humungous scaly tail bearing down on the ship. I ran to my sword that was
stuck between the mast and the captians quarters. I gave a quick prayer at the shear luck that it
wasnt thrown overboard with most of the cargo on deck and my two comrades. My hand wrapped around
the hilt as I unsheathed the sword and got into a readied stance. Unfortunately it was all for
naught. The tail smashed into the ship, splitting it into two pieces, both of which quickly began
to sink. My footing gave way as I coasted down the back half of the ship into the water. I tried to
grab hold of the ship, watching as the front piece spun and sunk into the vortex of water surrounding
Leviathyn. The half that I was near made its way to the same demise. I fought against the pull of the
current, my free hand flailing about in the water, the other hand gripping my sword with a deathhold.
I struggled in vain as I slowly slipped beneath the waves, gagging on seawater as conciousness slowly
slipped from me and the world went completely black.

I awoke to the sound of the shallow waves crashing on a somehow familiar beach. My head throbbed and
ached as I stumbled to my feet. The armor I was wearing creaked, and water slipped from every crevice.
Taking two steps I fell to one knee, coughing up seawater and shaking my head. Through one eye, the other
squeezed shut due to the pain I felt in my head. I spotted my sword a few feet away and fumbled as I made
my way over to it, only to fall to my knees. I landed next to it, my hand fell onto the hilt and again
the darkness over took me.
