A Sad Little Smile
A Final Fantasy VIII Poem
by Trick Sparrow

Don't you dare deny it, Uncle Laguna
I see the pain you try so hard to hide
You miss Raine more than ever;
You'd give this world up to be by her side
I wish I could tell you how much I care,
But I know exactly what you'd do:
You'd hug me with a sad little smile
And say, "Elle, that's why I love you."

The work is getting to you, dear uncle
Kiros, Ward, myself-- we all see it
But you would drown yourself in your duties
And if you ran out of breath, then so be it
I'm tempted to order you to take a vacation
But I'm guessing that even if I did,
You'd ruffle my hair with a sad little smile
And say, "You're the one who should loosen up, kid."

If all that weren't enough already,
There's still the matter of your son.
Poor Squall was never good with emotions--
They're the one battle he's never won.
I just want you to admit that you're proud,
But you're the only one who can make you see
Besides, you'd just shrug with a sad little smile
And say, "You need to stop worrying about me."

You make me laugh when I'm crying,
You lift me up when I feel low
You're the one person I admire most
And I hope it's obvious enough to show
I'll love you till the day I die, Laguna--
My father, my protector, my friend
And as I look at your sad little smile
I hope that, one day, your grief will end.

A/N: I tried not to make the rhyming sound forced, but I think I failed miserably. Praise me, flame me, do what you will. But I'm pretty dang proud of this.
