“Talk, damn you,” he whispered at me and I stared at him from behind the bars, the ever present pain making my temper flare more than it had ever done before. I closed my eyes, nearly screaming when the cage was shaken by the man who stole my work.
“Talk! I know you can! I did everything right! Why did she die?” he demanded and I simply stared at him with my turquoise eyes. I smiled as only I could, he screamed and began beating on the bars. My fingers trying to find purchase on the metal floor, it failed and I hit the back wall of the cage, my back against the bars enough so that when my tormentor kicked me I actually received the full blow.
“Why? Tell me!” he spat and raged, no longer aiming, which decreased the amount of abuse I was being exposed to. He dropped the cage and I managed to curl into a ball in the middle, closing my eyes and fighting a whimper of fear. A year I had been caged like one of his monstrosities, like one of my beloved creations. He had allowed me to help him, I had gained my State Alchemy position with his help so I wanted to return the favor. I felt the tears running down my face as he roared and screamed. Somewhere above me a child began to cry and he rushed off. I looked around the room at all the monsters he had created and I sobbed. Wishing to return to my home, to my lab, to my children, to my life…

Roy sighed as he looked at the calendar, it had been a full year since she vanished. He had walked her home after they had celebrated their promotions together, she had invited him in to show him the creature she had bought. The ape was quite intelligent, able to understand spoken word and respond back with hand signals.
She had been like the child he had grown up with, smiling at him with her big green eyes as she told him about her plans to buy three more apes and begin testing to make the perfect chimera. She had hugged him, then kissed him.
Roy closed his eyes and shook his head in shame. She had kissed him and he had pushed her away, telling her that she would always be that little girl from his memories. She had laughed and stated she wouldn't have time for entertaining him anyway. She was a good liar, as long as you didn't look into her eyes, they were truly the windows to her soul because if you looked in them, you would see what she was truly feeling.
Roy hated himself for denying her that one night. Perhaps if he had been there he would have saved her from whoever broke into her house, killed her perfect chimera test subject, and kidnapped her. He was still suspicious about her tutor, but the man's wife had been fighting with him that night and he had been left to take care of their child.
Roy looked at the report from the paper, hidden in his desk, there to remind him of his failing. A picture of a woman and a chimera with all the information on her disappearance. The uniform suited her as she rested a hand on the lion-dog chimera that was staring at her in adoration. She was gifted with beasts.
Roy filled his glass with the bottle of brandy from his bottom drawer. He stared at the amber liquid before closing his eyes and swallowing. Another year, no clues, no ideas, and no more support. Hughes even told him that the chances she were still alive were minimal to non-existent, most abductions ended with the victim dead within the first three days. Roy removed the article and put it in his pocket. She was a home regret now, she couldn't distract him during his work hours. He poured another glass.
He walked to the desk that used to be hers, he sat down and raised his glass, hoping she was watching him from above and not waiting for him to rescue her. He finished his drink and headed home.
