Gundam Wing Fan Fiction ❯ Baby Blue ❯ Baby Blue ( Chapter 1 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Note: This will be SHORT and weird. It's been a while since I did
anything Gundam Wing-related, I've been busy catching all the new
Gundam series on TV (8^th MS Team, 0080 War in the Pocket). Many
thanks to Elf, who inspired me with her perfect Duo fics. My
apologies, Elf, Duo is a vamp here, but you can hardly tell, anyway.
No blood, no gore, no nothing. Just...fluff.

Summary: There isn't one. Ba ha ha! But if you've seen "Interview with
the Vampire," I stole the idea from there.

Baby Blue

"Well?" Heero asked.

Duo glanced at him, and then at Quatre. "No."

"Why?"

"Because."

"That's not a reason, Duo," Quatre said quietly.

"It is now." Duo crossed his arms over his chest, a defiant look on
his face. He resisted the urge to say, "So THERE!"

"What if we said we could change your mind?" Quatre asked.

"I'd say you were crazy," Duo replied, glaring at him.

Quatre glared right back at him, surprisingly enough. "You're being
unreasonable."

"I'm being difficult. Wu-Man is unreasonable."

"Just because YOU don't have any morals, Maxwell," a familiar voice
snarled from the doorway.

Duo turned to see Wufei and Trowa there. Wufei was glaring at him, and
Trowa had the usual unreadable expression on his face as he moved into
the room, automatically planting himself next to Quatre on the couch.
Duo noted that Wufei was clutching a large bundle in his hands.
"What's that?"

"A gift," Trowa answered.

"From?"

"All of us," Trowa said. "Take a look."

Duo walked over to Wufei and carefully pulled at the damp cloth,
expecting a pie to fly out at any moment. Wufei wasn't a practical
joker, but even he would've laughed to see a pie dripping off Duo's
face.

The cloth fell away, revealing an unruly lock of bright orange hair.

Duo's face went pale, and he ripped at the bundle.

The pale face fell gently against Wufei's chest. The girl was either
sleeping or...

Duo spun around to face the others. "Which one of you did this?!"

"I did."

Duo blinked and turned back to Wufei. "You?"

"Yes, me," Wufei repeated, looking irritated. He shoved the bundle
into Duo's arms and quickly left the room.

The bundle shifted slightly in his arms, and the eyelids fluttered
open. Baby blue orbs peered into Duo's dark blue eyes, and he was
forced to look away.

"Happy Birthday, Duo," Quatre said, almost cheerfully.

* * * * *

Yes, he'd said it. But he hadn't really meant it.

"I want to do something different," he'd said that day.

Heero had only been half-listening at the time.

"I want a child," he heard himself say.

Heero turned to look at him, grunted, then left the room.

Duo had shook his head later on, realizing it was foolishness. A child
was so much work. And he didn't really need one. He just missed Hilde
(damn her for dying on him) and women in general. Not that he couldn't
have any woman he chose, now. He just...didn't want them.

He didn't like men, either.

Yet, he wanted someone to hold and kiss.

Someone to teach things to.

Someone to belong to him, and someone he would belong to.

Someone to want him when they were scared, to need only him so much
that no one else would do.

He did want a child.

"But not this way," he said softly, staring down at the girl. She was
asleep again, extremely tired for some reason. Duo couldn't remember
being that tired when they had changed him, only violently sick for a
the first few days. Maybe it was different for kids, then? He wasn't
sure. He'd thought for so long that vampires were a myth.

But then, so were gods. Especially gods of the dead.

By all rights, he didn't exist.

Duo Maxwell. Gundam pilot. God of Death. Vampire.

Adding "Father" to his list of titles didn't fit. Not really.

In her sleep, the girl murmured and rolled onto her side, orange hair
spilling all over the pillow.

Duo reached down and carefully tucked the hair behind her ear,
smoothing it into a long, somewhat neat mass.

Then she rolled again and ruined his handiwork.

Duo sighed ain frustration and moved away from the bed, plopping down
in an armchair. It would have to do, since he'd given up his bed for
her. Why had he done that, anyway? Wufei and Trowa had brought her in,
so one of them should've given up their beds.

He sensed movement behind him, and before he could turn, a tiny hand
touched his knee.

Mariemaia Barton Khushrenada stared up at him, her blue eyes confused
and innocent all at once. Finally, she recognized his face. There was
no fear, no anger, no sorrow. Only...trust?

"You should be resting," he said after a moment.

She nodded, but didn't move away.

"Well?"

Mariemaia continued to stare at him. Then she crawled into his lap,
resting her head against his chest. "Will you teach me?" she asked
quietly.

"Teach you?" he said, disturbed by how natural it felt to have her
soft, silky hair brushing against his chin.

She nodded. "I need to know. Please?"

Duo hesitated. If he taught her, there'd be no turning back. Once the
others saw him giving her the slightest bit of attention, it would be
official. The God of Death would be a...parent.

Her soft, cold fingers brushed against his chin. "Please?" She
unleashed the innocent fury of her baby blue eyes, not realizing the
power she already possessed over him. It would only grow greater if he
said yes, but there was nothing for it.

"Yes."

She smiled and threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.

Duo stiffened, then slowly wrapped his arms around her tiny frame.
They stayed like that for a while, until he realized that she was
asleep again. He thought about putting her back to bed, but the notion
suddenly seemed evil, the thought of waking her sinful, even.

Quatre came in a moment later, wearing a robe and a knowing smile.
"And you guys said I was the soft one."

Duo glared at him, but his heart wasn't in it. "Why are you still up?"

"I thought you two would need this." He carefully draped the blanket
over the sleeping child.

"Thanks," Duo muttered, looking uncomfortable.

"Don't worry," Quatre said, grinning at him. "You'll grow into it."

"What?"

"Parenthood." Quatre said the word as if it should hold some new
significance.

Duo frowned. It did, damn him and his optimism.

"See you in the morning."

"Yeah. Sure," Duo muttered absently, staring at the sleeping girl's
face.

* * * * *

"Should we all sleep with one eye open?" Trowa asked.

Quatre smiled. "No. I think everything's going to be fine. We made the
right choice."

"And you really think Duo will go back to the Cinq Kingdom with us
now?"

"Yes. Mariemaia has to learn many things, and she'll only learn about
war if she stays with us. She needs to learn about peace, too, and
Relena can help with that."

"I thought we got the kid for Maxwell," Wufei said, starting to get
angry. "I'm not going to waste my time raising a weak little girl."

"We wouldn't let you within ten feet of her," Trowa replied.

"Good."

"She doesn't like you, anyway."

All heads turned to look at Heero, who was standing by the window.

"And I suppose she's just crazy about you, huh?" Wufei asked.

"That shouldn't matter to you," Heero answered.

"It doesn't!" Wufei snapped.

"Then shut up already."

Wufei glared at him and stormed out of the room.

"What about Relena, though?" Trowa asked.

"She doesn't care," Heero replied. "She's offering us sanctuary."

"That's not what I meant," Trowa said. "Will you...?"

Heero glanced at him. "No. Someone would get suspicious if she only
went out at night."

"That's the only reason?"

"Of course not. It's one of many."

"We can talk about this later," Quatre interrupted. "We have a long
day ahead of us, Duo especially. And someone's got to contact Lady
Une."

* * * * *

Duo opened his eyes, staring at the small person on his chest. This
was crazy, he thought. He was a foster parent, and not only that. He
had to teach his kid how to be a vampire. And humans thought they had
it rough...

* * * * *

Mariemaia smiled, burying her face against Duo's shoulder. He wasn't
the first person she would've thought of as father material, but he'd
do quite nicely, with some tips from Quatre. The Arabian Gundam pilot
had to know plenty about girls, having that many sisters.

She would miss Lady Une a little, but the Preventors had taken up too
much of her time, anyway.

And on top of it all, Duo was going to TEACH her. She could hardly
wait; she was so excited. She was already mature enough, and she'd
seen enough of war to know the basics. It would be dangerous, but she
was absolutely convinced that she was ready. Still, she couldn't help
wondering...

How many kids could say they got to learn how to be a Gundam pilot
from a real Gundam pilot...?

The End.

I know, probably the worst possible place to end it. I didn't really
plan on a series, and I may do a sequel, if I can figure this thing
out. It's after one in the morning and I'm sleepy.
