Chapter 2

(11 Years Later)

Hilde sighed in frustration as she came down the stairs. She'd been trying desperately to wake
Day up, but it didn't seem to be happening. "Duo, go wake up your daughter." She said as she
poured herself a glass of orange juice.

Duo, who had just shoved an entire piece of toast in his mouth, shook his head. "Da don wak sup
fo no on."

Hilde looked over at her husband and shook her head. "Duo, swallow your food." She said. Hilde
could almost see the little light bulb on the top of Duo's head turn on, though the light was rather
dim.

Duo took a big gulp and tried speaking again. "What I said is that Day doesn't get up for anyone.
Anyway, why do I have to do it?"

Hilde shrugged. "She's your fault and is therefore your responsibility."

Duo gasped, taken aback by the shrewd comment. "Hey! You helped!" He protested.

Hilde put the glass down on the counter. "Please Duo. I said, let's cuddle like all good little girls
do, but you said 'no I wanna get it on'." Duo ducked his head in fake shame. Then he grinned
mischievously.

"Wanna do it again?" He asked.

For this Hilde slapped him up side the head. Duo just laughed as he walked up the stairs. As he
came upon Day's room, the door was partly open due to Hilde's earlier attempts at waking the
sleeping teen. Duo pushed it open and sighted his daughter tangled in the sheets and the phone
tightly in her grasp. Duo chuckled. She was so much like him it was scary. Well, only one way to
wake the sleeping beast. He grabbed his cell phone from his back pocket and dialed his home
phone number. The moment the phone rang Day reacted. She struggled to find the 'on' button on
the phone, but in the process kicked her dozing cat, Shy. Shy hissed and ran out of the room
quickly. The cat's quick movements took Day by surprise ad she all but tumbled out of bed,
landing face first on the carpet. Duo could barely conceal his laughter. "Ow." She mumbled as
she pulled herself up and back into her warm bed. She turned on the phone and said miserably.
"Hello?"

"Hi Day!" Duo said cheerfully.

"Daddy? Why are you calling? Where are you?"

Duo laughed. "If you will turn you head to the right you'll see me."

Day did as her father said and was surprised to see her father waving at her as he was leaning
against the doorframe. She leaned against the headboard of her bed sighed. "So what are you
doing over there?" She asked into the phone.

"Your Mom sent me to get you up for school." Duo replied into the cell.

"Oh, ok. I'm gettin'." She said. Duo looked at his watch and whistled.

"Listen. I gotta get to work or I'll be late. So I'll see you tonight."

"Ok, bye Dad, love ya!" With that, Duo clicked his cell shut and Day hung her phone up. She got
up from bed and stretched before closing her door. "Now, what to wear.what to wear." Day
thought aloud. She searched through her closet and didn't find anything that seemed to suit the
day, so she went to her dresser and found nothing there either. She sighed in frustration when
suddenly her eyes fell upon a wadded up, sky blue shirt. It was her favorite. It was sleeveless and
had a v-neck collar. She grabbed a wadded up pair of blue jeans that had a hole in the right knee.
After putting everything on she sat herself in front of the mirror to brush out the thick, tangled
mop of hair. She stared at her reflection as she ran the brush through her chestnut brown hair. It
was thick and fell just a little below her shoulders. Her hair accented her eyes, which were a
violet-blue. Her skin was semi-fare and practically flawless except for some of the scars she'd
gotten by getting into several fights and of course being clumsy around the firearms. She was
short, another wonderful trait she'd gotten from her father, but it didn't really matter because she
was the kind of person who had a body with all the right curves in all the right places. That one
she got from her mother. She had her mother's temper and determination, but she was also pretty
carefree like her father, had the happy-go-lucky thing going on. She put down the brush and
sighed, looking at the make-up she had sitting on her vanity. She'd never used it much; she'd
never had too. Day shrugged, deciding not to put any on. She glanced over at her clock and
gasped. "6 minutes! Damn you Father Time!" She said as she rushed out of her room. She nearly
tumbled down the stairs and fell when she stepped on the slippery, tile kitchen floor.

"Are you ok?" Hilde asked, eyeing her daughter.

"I'm fine! Where's my bag?" Day asked hurriedly.

"By the door where you left it last night." Her mother replied.

"Thanks mom, bye!" With that, Day grabbed her black backpack and ran out of the house,
slamming the door behind her.

Hilde sighed. "3.2.1.right on cue." At that moment Day came back in and looked at her Mom
shyly.

"I forgot to put on my shoes, eheh." Day slipped on her black boots and was out of the house in
seconds. The dew on the green grass sparkled in the early morning sun, making the ground look
like it was an endless field of tiny crystals. Day almost wanted to stop and admire the scenery,
but there was no time. "Man! I'm going to be late. Elaine is going to kill me!" She said aloud.
The thought made her pick up the speed she was running at and so in her frustrations she
somehow managed to run straight past Elaine, and into Sakora Chang. The impact of the hit
knocked both girls to the ground. Day opened her eyes only to see little stars riding purple
motorcycles around and around her head. She opened and closed her eyes a few times to get the
strange image away and cleared her head. As soon as she could see again she thoroughly wished
that the little motorcycle riding stars would come back. Because looking straight at her was a
very pissed off looking Sakora. Day smiled. "Hey Sakora."

"Maxwell! Why don't you watch the hell where you're going?" Shouted the Chinese girl as she
pulled herself off of the ground.

Day responded by picking herself up off of the cold cement and shrugging. "Sorry, I'm in a rush,
I'm going to be late." She said helplessly.

"Correction.WE'RE going to be late.thanks to you Day." The voice came from behind her and she
recognized the steely tone immediately. She turned to see Elaine walking up to the group of girls.

"Hey! I ran right past you." Day commented.

"Really? I had no idea." Elaine said sarcastically. Elaine had always been a sarcastic type of
person, but they all were in nature. Elaine's personality was a lot like her father's. Strong willed,
strong physically, smart, very to the point, but not quite as much as Heero. She didn't mind
violence in particularly, but having Relena as a mother has to altar you opinion somewhat. She
didn't believe in unnecessary violence or starting fights. She had straight, dark brown hair, like
her father's that went down to the middle of her back. Her bangs were parted in the middle and
the rest of her hair was pulled into a tight pony tail. Her blue eyes were the same color as
Relena's. She was only a little taller than Day. Her skin was kind of tan because she was part
Japanese, but slightly pale because she was part European. She was wearing blue jean shorts,
with a white halter-top and a long-sleeved, navy blue cardigan over it. She had a pair of brown
hiking boot type things and that offset the outfit perfectly. Day was glad that Elaine had Relena
as a mother, because if there was one thing Heero Yuy couldn't do, it was coordinate his outfits!

Day shrugged again. "Sorry." She said sheepishly, bowing her head.

"No you're not." Said Sakora.

Day turned toward her friend. The girl was standing with a hand on her hip, looking cynically at
her. The long, straight, jet-black hair fell in long, velvety strands over her slim shoulders. Her
black eyes twinkled in the morning sun as she looked with an amused expression on her face at
Day's sudden loss of words. Sakora was a slim, yet well filled out girl, even the way her perfectly
shaped nails grew outwards from her slim fingers. She had on black jeans that were tight fitting
to her legs and black sneakers. She was wearing a white shirt that buttoned up the front, except
for the top two buttons which she left hanging open, and it had collar and quarter length sleeves.
Just by looking at Sakora, you'd think she was a weak, gullible, little girl who could easily be
taken advantage of. Big mistake to think that. Sakora Chang was a superb martial artist, good
with a sword, as well as a gun, and she could take down the strongest male in their entire school,
including full-grown adults. She was not someone you wanted to tango with. Ever. Of course,
neither was Day or Elaine. They had both been trained in martial arts, hacking, lock picking,
electronics; they were both excellent with any gun. But Day had one thing that none of them had.
She had been trained in street fighting as well as all of the other things. Duo had made it a special
point to teach her. "My God! Day Maxwell with out a smart-ass comeback. I think the
Apocalypse has come!" Sakora said with fake enthusiasm. She grinned ruefully at the rising
anger showing in Day's eyes.

Day opened her mouth to say something back, but she was cut-off as a tall, slender girl with light
brown hair that went down to her shoulders and almost looked like it had streaks of red in it
when the sun hit it right, intervened. "Play nice girls. If we don't get moving we're all going to be
late." Her green eyes glanced at Sakora and then back to Day. "And it won't only be Day's fault
this time." It was Tess Barton. Now, if you wanted quiet, you found it. Tess rarely spoke unless
she thought it was necessary, a lot like her father, Trowa. However, you didn't want to get on her
bad side, because she also had the fire in her personality that she got from her mother. Tess had
the knife throwing ability, as well as the flexibility, agility, and acrobatic skills of both her
parents. She wore khaki shorts with a black belt and a sleeveless, forest green tank top, which
framed her upper torso. She also wore a pair of white sneakers that were particularly good for
running.

Elaine nodded. "Agreed." She said simply. With that she grabbed Day's arm and dragged the
protesting girl off. Tess just shook her head at the entire incident and then motioned for Sakora to
come with her.

The pair took off running knowing that they would be late. Day and Elaine made it into class just
before the bell rang. However, Elaine went to Biology and Day went to English. Day took her
seat in the back of the class, just a desk behind Andréa Winner. Just as the teacher, Mrs. Lane,
began to talk the speaker turned on, asking her to come to the office because she had a phone
call.

"I'll be back momentarily class." She said, and then she walked out of the room. Day sighed,
exhausted from all of the rushing that morning. Andréa turned around and shook her head.

"Wake up late again, Day?" She asked.

"Yeah.is it surprising?"

Andréa shook her head. "Not at all, but really, you have got to get here earlier, Day. It's one thing
that you're late, but that makes Elaine late too."

Day smiled at her friend. Andréa was a very kind person, like her father. She had long, straight,
platinum blonde hair that fell in waves of silk all the way down to her waist. She'd grown her
bangs out a ways and so they were shorter than her hair length, but it looked good. She was pale,
like her both of her parents and had frosty blue eyes that were identical to her mother's. Her lips
were always a light pink, just naturally light pink, and they glistened because she always had on
lip-gloss. This accented the extremely light pink, nearly white shirt she had on. It was simple, just
a v-neck collar and long sleeves that began to flare out a little before her wrist with a pair of light
blue jeans which framed all the right places from the waist down and some black boots with 2
inch heels that zipped up the side. She was kind, very considerate, polite, courteous, and was
extremely intelligent. Out of all of them, she had the highest grade point average and had never
gotten anything less than an A, not even an A-! She was very good with electronics and was
always working one some theory she'd developed or some scientific thingy. Lately she'd been
working non-stop on something and she wouldn't tell any of them what it was, not even her
parents knew. Whenever Day went over to her house, she'd ask Quatre and Dorothy about it, but
they never had any answers, and so Day would have to drag Andréa out of her room. However,
she had a little of Dorothy in her too. She was excellent with a sword; her and Sakora were at the
same level in that area. She was also a pretty good shot with any gun, like the rest of them were.
Out of all of them, she was the only one who could hit a moving target with a bow and arrow,
while riding a horse, and she was even better when she was standing still. She'd developed the
skill of archery all by herself. And then, of course, she knew the martial arts and self- defense,
and had memorized all of the pressure points that could disable, knock out, or even kill a person,
like all of them. She never liked to fight or hurt anyone, but she was never one to be taken
advantage of, there were some people who thought she'd be easy, but they don't think so
anymore!

Day shrugged. "Ah well, that girls to up tight anyway. She needs to kick back and enjoy life.
We're not our parents Dréa, we don't have war to worry about.it's all cool." Day leaned back in
her chair and smiled at her friend.

Andréa just shook her head. "I don't know how you can be so cool about things, Day. Especially
with your grades the way they are."

Day sweat dropped. "Well, yeah, about those little things." She started.

"Those LITTLE things? Day, those little things determine how you're going to spend the rest of
your life!"

Before Day could say anything back, Mrs. Lane came back in. She smiled brightly. "Ok, class.
Let's start by handing in yesterday's homework. Just pass them to the front of the row." She
instructed.

At the mention of "yesterday's homework" Day cringed. And it hit her like bomb; she'd forgotten
to do it!

Andréa turned around, expecting Day to put the sheet of paper in her hand, but then she saw the
look on her friend's face and whispered, "Again?" Day nodded and Andréa sighed. She shrugged
and turned around, handing her assignment to the guy in front of her. Mrs. Lane skimmed
through the papers she had in her hands and then frowned.

"Ms. Maxwell. Did you forget to hand in the assignment?"

Day shook her head helplessly.

"Then where is it?" The teacher asked.

"Now, really Mrs. L. You're a smart lady, was that question really necessary?" Day asked,
smiling at her comeback.

Mrs. Lane's frown grew deeper. "Ms. Maxwell! This is the second time this week that you have
failed to complete an assignment! Are you aware that, as of now, you have a D- in this class? It is
kids like you who make a mockery of the education system! I cannot and will not stand for
anymore of your nonsense. I'm calling your parents and." She stopped for a moment to write
something on a yellow piece of paper and then slapped it down on Day's desk. "You have
Saturday detention for four hours!"

Day's eyes widened and then she groaned. "Come on Mrs. L."

The teacher's hard, angry eyes softened for a moment. She really did like the girl, she really,
really did, but she couldn't stand for any of this. Day was a smart girl and Mrs. Lane knew it, she
just didn't apply herself. This couldn't go on. She let herself look angry again. "I suggest, Ms.
Maxwell, that you clean up your act, or I will not hesitate to flunk you."

"Yes, ma'am." Day mumbled. She sunk down into her seat and sighed. She was used to being
lectured by teachers, so she wasn't embarrassed. However, her parents had gotten a bad report at
conferences and had said that if she didn't do anything to fix her grades, she'd be grounded for
longer than normal, and normal grounding was usually anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. She
shuddered at the thought of doing nothing but chores for longer than 2 months. There was only
one thing to do. No one on who didn't work at or associate with the Preventers did know how to
reach head quarters for obvious security reasons. Hilde and Duo worked there along with Trowa,
Wufei, Sally, Heero, Milliardo, Noin, Dorothy and Une, who ran headquarters. Quatre had WEI,
and Relena being Vice Foreign Minister. This meant that Mrs. Lane would have to leave a
message at home, so Day would just have to get home and erase the message before her parents
got to it. The problem was that sometimes Duo came home early from work because he'd
somehow or other con another employee into doing his paper work and then sneak out of HQ. So
class dragged on and on and on and then just for a twist, it dragged on some more. Finally Mrs.
Lane bid farewell to the class and everyone began to file out of the room, including Mrs. Lane
who was one hall duty in between passing time. As Day slide out of her seat, she noticed Jessie, a
tall, dark haired, blue eyed new boy approaching her. She thought he was heaven on Earth, but
she wasn't about to show it. Instead of going weak in the knees, which she never did anyways,
she nonchalantly looked up and then, as if he didn't even exist, she went on collecting her books.
She looked up then as he cleared his throat and shifted his weight to different foot.

"Um.hey Day." He said nervously. He absent-mindedly ran his fingers through his dark, wild
hair.

"Oh, hi. Jessie, right?" She asked (as if she didn't know!).

He nodded vigorously. "Yeah, I'm uh, surprised you know my name, what with me being new
here and ya know, invisible."

Day chuckled. "Now, that's not true. Half the girls in the school swoon over you whenever you
walk by. For a knew kid, you're pretty popular." Day said, trying to and successfully, pretending
to have no idea what he was about to ask.

"So, listen. There's the school dance this Friday, and I just. I mean, you want to go with me?" He
asked. Then he looked down at the ground as though someone had just slapped upside the face.
He obviously expected her decline the offer.

"Ok." Day said simply, winking at him when he looked up with the shocked expression.

"Really? You haven't been asked already?" Day shrugged.

"Nope. So I guess I'll see ya Friday then." With that she left, leaving the stunned boy behind her.
Day smiled to herself. I'm so happy! I'm walking on thin air! I'm so happy. There's sunshine
everywhere! She sang in her head. The rest of the day went by in a daze. All she could think
about was Friday preparations, but by the time the last class let out, she only had one thing on her
mind. The message and getting home to erase it. When the bell rang, she was the first one out of
her seat and the first one out of the classroom. She ran to her locker, which was jammed. She
cursed and sent a punch into the locker door. She tried the combination again, and the locker
opened without complaint. After stuffing her bag with her books and the night's torturous
homework, she slung the bag over her shoulder and literally sprinted out of the building.
