The shadowed figure jumped quickly from building to building. The sky was
lit only by a half moon. No stars out tonight. It was obvious from the stance of
the figure, the quick, fluid movements, that they knew what they were doing.

Pausing at one particular building, the figure dropped down to a window,
prying it open and slipping inside.

The office was pitch black. Not even a guard patroled this area. Completely
top secret. Extremely restricted access. But the figure somehow knew their way
around. They jumped and dodged and rolled when there was nothing obvious there.
Reaching a door down the hallway, the lock was picked, and the figure quietly
pushed open the door and entered.

General Suyn was at his desk, at the far end of his expansive office, reading
a paper with only a small lamp light on. He didn't notice the figure, dressed
from head to toe in black, creeping up behind him until it was too late. One
quick pull in the right direction on the General's head and he was dead. His
body slumped over the desk, lifeless, while the figure made a quick getaway,
leaving absolutely no trace.

The Shadow had struck again.

"Hey, Wu-man! How was your mornin'?" Duo stated cheerfully as Wufei entered
the office.

Wufei tried not to snarl at Duo, instead going over to inspect the body. "It
was fine. And don't call me 'Wu-man'."

Quatre lowered the camera to look at the other two officers. "Would you two
please try to keep it down?"

Duo laughed, going back to walking the perimeter. "Why, afraid we'll wake the
dead?"

Wufei shook his head, pulling off a rubber glove. "I don't think anyone will
be waking him up. His neck was broke. A quick, clean death. It looks like he
didn't even see his killer until it was too late."

"Who could have done such a thing?" Quatre took one last picture, then bagged
the camera.

"It looks like the work of The Shadow." Wufei said, throwing away the gloves.
"It has to be his handiwork. A top secret government building, a dead General,
and no trace of the killer."

Duo sighed, giving up his search. "And no way to know how they got in or out.
This is... what? The fifth case this month? This Shadow character is doing some
real damage, and we still don't have a lead."

"Or a clue." a voice from the doorway remarked.

"Heero! What are you doing here? I thought this was your day off?" Quatre
asked.

Heero shrugged and made his way in to the office, taking a brief glance at
the body. "When you're a cop for the NYPD you don't have a day off. They called
me after Quatre reported in. Relena was, to say the least, ticked off."

Duo chuckled, patting Heero on the back. "That wife of yours could take out
the entire New York City Police Department by herself. Good thing she's a
pascifist."

Heero rolled his eyes, a grin barely on his lips. "You're telling me? I
swear, sometimes I think if she advocated fighting she'd take over the world."
He paused beside Wufei. "What have you found?"

"My best guess? The Shadow."

"Again?" Heero sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "We might have to
call the Feds in on this one."

Duo and Quatre grimaced. This was not turning out to be a good day.

Wufei, Quatre, and Duo arrived at Heero and Relena's house at 6:30. They were
supposed to go over some of the details of the case, and eat dinner as well. But
a suprise was awaiting them. Duo had his hand up, poised to knock, and the door
opened.

"I'll be right back! I just have to go get the- Oh! I'm sorry! I didn't see
you there!" The girl speaking barely stopped herself from running over Duo. He
put a hand on one of her shoulders to steady her.

"It's alright. I'm Duo Maxwell. Who are you?"

"I'm Lindsay. I'm sorry, but I have to run out to the store. Heero forgot the
salad dressing again. Umm... I'll see you later." She smiled at Duo, then took
off running down the sidewalk.

Wufei cocked an eyebrow, then shook his head. "Well, that was... different."

Relena appeared at the door, smiling at the three and waving them in. "Come
on! Don't just stand out there, you'll freeze to death!" At 23 Relena was even
more beautiful than she had been when she was young, when Heero and her first
met. Her once long brownish-blonde hair was short now, to her shoulders, and
curled at the ends. She moved to the side as they entered the house, then shut
the door behind them.

"So who was that girl that almost ran over Duo?" Quatre asked, setting the
table.

Relena set down the pot roast, then looked over at the blonde officer. "Oh,
you mean Lindsay? She's an old friend of mine. We went to grade school together,
before my parents moved me to Japan. She herself just got back to the states a
few weeks ago from traveling abroad. She found out that I'd moved back here and
got in touch with me." Pausing, adjusting a wine glass. "Why?"

Quatre shrugged, sitting down at the table. "No reason. Just curious."

Heero came in to the dining room and pulled out a chair for Relena. She
smiled up at him and sat down.

"She's a really nice girl. Quiet a lot, but nice." Heero stated, sitting down
himself at the head of the table.

Duo, seated next to Quatre, across from Relena, and to Heero's left, was
oddly quiet.

Wufei started to say something, but was interuppted by the sound of a door
opening.

"I'm back! Boy, it's cold out there. Did you know it's snowing now? Oh, hi
again!" Lindsay came in to the room in a slight blur, almost covered with snow
and holding a small plastic bag. "I got the dressing, Heero. You didn't say how
far the store was." She laughed. "Although I did like the walk." Putting the
dressing down by the salad, she took the other end of the table, trying to brush
some of the snow from her coppery curls.

"Thanks Lin." Relena grinned at her. Heero picked up the salad and started
passing it around.

"No problem. Oh, I'm so sorry! I never properly introduced myself! I'm
Lindsay McCallah."

Quatre almost choked on his drink. Duo had to slap him a few times on the
back. Wufei stared at her, wide-eyed.

"THE Lindsay McCallah? Tom McCallah's only child? Heir to the Tibaday
company?" Quatre asked when he'd finally gotten his composure back.

Lindsay nodded, dipping out some of the roast. "Yes. You've heard of my
father?"

Duo snorted, laughing. "Who hasn't? Tom McCallah's only one of the most
powerful men in the world."

"Really? I hadn't noticed." Lindsay could barely keep herself from laughing.
It happened every time...

Wufei finally spoke up. "So what brought you back to the states?"

Lindsay was about to answer when there was a sudden crash heard in the living
room. Heero stood, putting a hand on Relena's shoulder. Duo and Quatre grabbed
their guns and stood as well. What could it be now?

Treize Cushranada sat back in the plush leather chair, narrowing his eyes at
the figure in front of him. "It is time now. We're moving on to the next phase."

Lady Une stepped foreward from behind Treize's chair, eyes widdening. "But-"

Treize waved a hand at Une. She stepped back, lowering her head. It was not
her place to question.

"Your next target is Milliardo Peacecraft, Secretary of Defense, and his
fiancee, Lt. Noin."

The figure, clothed from head to toe in black, bowed, then left as silently
as they'd come.

Treize nodded slightly, steppling his fingers under his chin. "It begins now,
Milliardo. I will win this time. The Red Roses shall be triumphant, and the US
government shall topple at our feet. We will rule once more."
