Vernon fell down the stairs when he was almost three years old.  That’s what his parents told the A&E doctors.  He was in far too much pain to provide his own account.  The tumble—the result of a quick but clumsy toddler, his mummy insisted calmly, speaking through an iron face shellacked in foundation—left him concussed and with a fractured tibia, never mind the bruises.  If the doctors were suspicious about the force needed to create these injuries, they kept it to themselves. 

He spent a week in hospital, and, oh, did he sleep soundly in that white cot.
