Vernon knew far earlier than most children his age that beloved holiday icons didn’t exist. No Cupid, no Easter bunny, and certainly no Santa Claus. This came about when Daddy caught him and Marge writing letters to the jolly fat elf a month before Christmas.

His ridicule was a palpable force. Marge, in a rare display of defiance, told Daddy that her friends who believed in Santa got gifts on Christmas day. She received a split lip and a necklace of bruises for her sass.

That year, they did not observe Christmas at all. It was a silent night, indeed.
