~~Sayuki's Secret~~

"Hey, look at this," said Mako as soon as she opened the first letter
in the day's mail.

"What is it?"

"It's a congratulations letter. 'Excellent job Miss Satou and Miss
Sayuki on your victory against the Otaki Golden Swords.' Pretty nice,
huh?"

"Yeah. Really nice. But who sent it?" asked Sayuki.

"Hmmm... 'Now that you've shown you can kick some Saitama butt too,
how about a match with us sometime? We are the top team in Gunma'..."
Mako put the letter in her lap and chuckled. "Red Suns."

"Keisuke," said Sayuki, now laughing herself. "'We are the top team
in Gunma', who else?"

"I don't know, but I think Ryousuke-san wrote the first part,
though," said Mako. "The only thing is, why do they call you Miss
Sayuki?"

Sayuki blinked. "They just don't know my family name, I guess."

"That's funny. That's something you'd think they'd know by now.
Especially somebody who picks up on things the way Ryousuke-san
does." She paused and then grinned. "You must be even smarter than I
thought, if this is a piece of info you can keep from him this long."

Sayuki giggled at that-but to Mako's surprise, she also looked a bit
uncomfortable. "Actually I haven't told anyone what my second name
really is."

"But you told me a long time ago! When we first started hanging out,
you told me."

"But I didn't tell you my *real* name," said Sayuki, all of a sudden
looking serious. "Listen, Mako. You cannot tell *anyone* what it is,
OK?"

"Why not?" Mako couldn't understand why her friend was being so
secretive.

"Well..." Sayuki sighed. "You see, it's..." She pulled Mako to
her and whispered in her ear.

Mako's eyes widened. "That?"

"Yes."

"But... but that means 'streetwalker'."

"Exactly. So don't tell anyone. I'm going to have it changed as soon
as I move out of my parents' house."

"Or when you get married?"

"Whenever, I want to have it changed just in case I don't."

Her friend could only blink at that.

"Mako, I mean it," said Sayuki, whipping her friend around to face
her. "I got teased all the time when I was little... you know,
before I moved to Matsuida? The other kids made my life miserable,
and I didn't even know what they were laughing about. When I found
out... Mako, can you imagine what all the guys on the other teams
would say if they knew my second name was slang for a hooker?"

Mako nodded. Already there were a ton of lewd jokes and appraisals
going around behind their backs.

"Plus, I just plain hate it. So... please?"

"Yes," said Mako, nodding again.

"Thank you." Sayuki hugged her friend. "You know, you said a while
ago, you wished you got more guys like me? I'm jealous of you, not
going through life with such an embarrassing name."

"How'd it get like that anyway?"

"No one knows. It didn't mean that when my parents were kids. I guess
somebody with a dirty mind had too much time on their hands."

"Well, I guesson't worry, Sayuki, your secret's safe with me."

"If anybody asks, just say my second name is... oh, I'm thinking of c
hanging it to 'Nagata'. I have a favorite cousin with that name."

" 'Nagata Sayuki'... it does kind of have a nice ring to it."

"I think so. Thanks," said Sayuki. Then her face broke into a big smile
as she took the letter from Mako. "Now, let's see, when *do* the Red Suns
want us to come up and kick their butts?"

THE END

A/N: In the book, "Bella Tuscany", there's a man named Anselmo
Martini Pisciacani. He had dropped the "Pisciacani" because in
dialect it meant "dog piss". Since I've never found out what Sayuki's
surname is, I wondered if she might have a similar story-- she
doesn't tell anyone what her name is because it unfortunately happens
to have a nasty or embarrassing meaning in slang or dialect.

After all, even in America we have a bunch of Hookers, Looneys,
Horneys, and more that are a lot worse...
