A Miko's Instincts Chapter 26
By Majicman

Disclaimer: No, I certainly do not own any of the characters in InuYasha. I do enjoy playing with `em, though.

Kagome woke up and smiled. She couldn't move too much because she was held firmly and protectively in her mate's arms.

“You're awake.”

“Ummm, yeah,” answered Kagome.

“The pups?”

“They're fine. I think they were playing king of the mountain last night…with the winner getting to be born first.”

InuYasha laughed. “They'll be coming out soon, then.”

“Yeah, another week, I think.”

“Want some breakfast?” asked InuYasha.

“Yeah.”

“I'll get Miroku and we'll make breakfast for you and Sango.”

Kagome frowned. “InuYasha?”

InuYasha, who had been headed out the door, turned back to his mate. “What?”

“I'm worried about Miroku. I think he's gotten morbid, the way he sits there staring at his hand.” Kagome's brow furrowed in concentration. “Do you think there's any way we can cheer him up?”

“Feh. There's a new geisha house in the next village.”

Kagome frowned. “I want to cheer up Miroku, not depress Sango.”

“I'll think about it, but actively seeking and destroying Naraku would be the only thing that would really help him,” said InuYasha. “He stays with Sango because he knows that is what's right, but he wonders if he will be like his father, leaving his problem to his child.”

Kagome sighed. “Then all we can do is keep him busy.”

“As I said, I'll get Miroku and we'll make you and Sango breakfast.”

“When did my mate get this wise?” Kagome chuckled.

“Sango?”

“Mmm-mmmmm?”

Miroku reached down, grabbed his wife's hip and shook her gently. “Sango?”

<WHHAAAPPPP>

Miroku struggled back to his feet, rubbing his jaw. “I guess you're finally awake.”

“Oh. What?” Sango looked up at her mate and the mark on his face and lowered her face again. “Sorry. Force of habit.”

“InuYasha and I are making breakfast. Kagome's getting up already and asked if you'd like to join her in a morning bath.”

“Tell her I'll be right out.” Sango looked at the mark on Miroku's face and winced. “Sorry.”

Miroku smiled. “Don't worry about it. Reminds me of old times.”

“Are ya comin', monk?” InuYasha yelled from outside the hut. “Or do I have to do everything myself?”

“Coming, InuYasha.”

“I can't believe I did it again.”

“Did what, Sango?”

The taijiya slid down into the water a bit more.

“I hit Miroku. He grabbed my butt to wake me up…and I hit him.”

“Just like old times, huh?”

“That's what Miroku said.”

“I wouldn't worry. He probably enjoyed it.” Kagome smiled, then turned more serious again. “I'm more worried about how morbid he's become. I've seen him sitting in front of your hut, just staring at his hand with the Kazaana.”

Sango sighed. “I'm worried about him, too.”

“InuYasha says he knows you need him here, but he's worried he'll be like his father.”

Sango looked down. “I know. I used to keep his mind occupied with…with…” Sango blushed. “Well, you know.”

Kagome smiled and put her hand on Sango's shoulder. “Yeah, I know…and we've had to find other ways to be…intimate…too.”

“Really?”

“I want to tell you, InuYasha gives one heck of a foot rub. And I'll rub those cute doggy ears till he purrs.”

Sango smiled. “Miroku doesn't have doggy ears, unfortunately.”
“Well, you can always find other things to rub.”

Sango blushed. “Kagome!”

“Hmmmm. I think I've got some things to teach you.”

“Kagome?”

“Fortunately, you know a girl from the future.”

“Oi, monk. Haven't you got that fire going yet?”

“It's ready, InuYasha,” answered Miroku. “I already have the water heating. What have you caught for our breakfast?”

InuYasha plopped down beside the monk and dropped some fish on the ground before him. The monk began cleaning the fish and preparing them to roast over the fire. “The extra fish will provide extra liver for our mates. Good for the pups.”

Miroku smiled. “Yours may be pups. Ours won't be.”

“You know what I mean, bouzu.”

The girls appeared on their way back from their bath.

“Breakfast in ten minutes!” yelled Miroku.

Naraku approached the cave where Jaken had taken the ceramic miko. Fortunately, there was more than one shield stone…and he had the other one.

The evil hanyou entered the cave to find Kikyo in the same spot Onigumo had lain all those years ago.

“Ku-ku-ku-ku-ku! How does it feel, Kikyo, to know that your `poor copy' has claimed InuYasha's heart?” Naraku sent out tentacles that roamed Kikyo's body, searching and probing. There was no trace of Kikyo remaining…only a slight, malevolent aura…plus the broken shell of the duck demon egg. “It is as I thought. The shard must have returned to InuYasha's wench along with the part of her soul held by Kikyo.

“No matter,” thought Naraku. “I'll have my shard back soon enough. Then not only will I add the miko's powers to my own, but also I will have her anytime I want her.” Naraku smirked. “The motion in the ocean, miko, the motion in the ocean.”

Naraku looked at Kikyo's frozen form and sneered. “Of course, I could use some practice.”

Once again, InuYasha had provided extra liver for the girls. A bowl full of raw liver was in front of each girl.

“Thank heavens for modern medicine,” Kagome thought as she winked and slipped one of her prenatal vitamins to Sango. The demon slayer nodded and took the proffered pill surreptitiously. Miroku knew about the pills, but InuYasha didn't. Kagome thought InuYasha's feelings might be hurt if he knew that Kagome and Sango weren't eating the raw liver he provided.

Kirara sat beside Sango, while Shippo sat beside Kagome.

Each time InuYasha looked at Kagome, a piece of Sango's liver disappeared into Kirara. Every time InuYasha looked at Sango, a piece of Kagome's raw liver was consumed by the Kitsune.

InuYasha smiled. The girls had finally wised up and were eating the liver he provided. And judging by the giggling, they had gotten over their squeamishness and were actually enjoying it.

“What are you doing today, InuYasha?” asked Kagome.

InuYasha looked at his mate, who winked at him, and nodded back to her. “There have been rumors of Naraku in a village nearby. I would like to take Miroku with me to check them out.” InuYasha turned to Sango. “Would you mind if we borrowed Kirara?”

“Of course not. Kirara?”

The fire cat looked at Sango.

“Please take Miroku and go with InuYasha to look for Naraku.”

“No time like the present,” said Miroku and climbed on.

“Follow me,” called out InuYasha, and started out with his patented leaping, ground-eating gait.

The girls watched as InuYasha, Miroku and Kirara disappeared into the distance.

“Well, one thing hasn't changed in five hundred years.”

“What's that, Kagome,” asked Sango.

“When the guys leave, they leave us the dishes.”

Naraku had finished getting dressed and was getting ready to leave the cave. He glanced back at Kikyo and smirked. “What a stroke of genius!” he thought. “The Inu gang will never think to look for my heart inside the ceramic miko. And that fool, Jaken, left the shield stone, so they won't even be able to find her.”

Naraku exited the cave and looked in the direction of the village. His own shield stone would keep anyone from detecting him. “Now, all I have to do is wait for InuYasha's wench to go into labor.”

InuYasha was surprised to say the least. He had made up the rumor about Naraku, but the village he and Miroku were visiting actually held traces of the bastard. InuYasha's sensitive nose told him that Naraku had been there within the past thirty-six hours and, after doing a sweep of the perimeter, InuYasha found that his enemy was heading in the direction of their own village.

InuYasha frowned. This wasn't good. He quickly tracked down the monk, who had been interviewing the villagers, and explained about finding Naraku's scent and where he might be going.

Surprisingly, the monk smiled. “Well, then, let's go, InuYasha!” Miroku jumped on Kirara and the fire cat rose into the air, ready to fly at top speed. Sango was in danger!

“Just follow me, monk,” growled InuYasha. The hanyou took off, following Naraku's scent trail.

Naraku looked into Kanna's mirror, which showed him what his Saimyoushou was seeing and hearing. “Ku-ku-ku-ku, InuYasha. Keep following the trail I've left you. Ku-ku-ku-ku!”

InuYasha burst into the village followed closely by Miroku on Kirara. “Has Naraku been here?”

Kagome looked up from where she and Sango were making supper. “Why, no, InuYasha. What makes you think he's here?” Kagome looked around nervously. “I don't sense any jewel shards.”

InuYasha sniffed. “I don't smell him here, but the trail leads here, then disappears.

Miroku spoke up. “He must have another shield stone, InuYasha.”

“Keh! He could be standing beside us and I wouldn't know it.”

Kagome frowned. “InuYasha, I want you to circle the village, then return.”

“What?”

“That's how I knew where Kikyo was. There is a thread that connects us, InuYasha, and the barrier created by a shield stone interrupts that connection.”

“So if I circle the village and the thread is blocked…”
“…I'll know where Naraku is. Yes, that's right.”

“I'm on it.” InuYasha took off to circle the village while Kagome concentrated on the thread that connected her to her mate.

At no time was the connection broken.

InuYasha returned and the Inu gang settled down for some supper. At first they ate in silence.

Finally, InuYasha spoke up. “I'll have to keep circling the village till Kagome senses he's here.”

“You can't do that, InuYasha,” said Kagome. “I won't be able to sleep without you.”

Sango looked to Miroku. “And I won't be able to sleep without my husband. Besides, I want you close to me and our baby.”

“Sango's right,” said Kagome. “InuYasha, you must remain close to me and our pups.”

InuYasha growled, but recognized the validity of Kagome's and Sango's concern. “They're right, Miroku. We must stay with our mates.”

Miroku looked back at InuYasha. “Right.”

Miroku settled down for the night behind his wife, holding her spoon-fashion. The monk had put up a ward that would alert them all if Naraku tried to come close to their huts. It wasn't much, but at least they'd have a warning.

Behind Sango, Miroku dwelled upon his Kazaana. It had become noticeably larger over the last few weeks and, while he understood why he needed to stay with Sango, he still fretted through the inactivity. It had been a blessing when InuYasha declared he had found Naraku's scent at that village.

At least he felt like he was doing something.

But now all they could do was wait for Naraku to make his move. And here he was with an over eight month pregnant wife and a Kazaana that might swallow him at any time. Miroku sighed. There would be no sleep on this night.

“Miroku?”

“Hush. Rest.”

“You're not sleeping.”

“Too much stress. I…well…you know.”

Sango turned to face her husband. “I think I can help.”

“Huh?”

Sango rolled her husband over on his back and looked into his eyes, smiling. “I think I can help.” She moved down her husband's body.

Miroku felt himself taken in hand. Despite his worries, he felt himself starting to respond. Something warm and wet…

“Sango!”

“Hmmmmmmm?”

In the next hut, Kagome giggled.

“What?” asked InuYasha.

“Looks like my little talk with Sango paid off.”

InuYasha listened closely, sniffed and smiled. “Exactly what are they doing?”

Kagome rolled her mate onto his back. “Let me show you.”

Pink and blue lights began flashing from the hut.

A few hours later, while basking in the afterglow, Kagome gasped and reached for her mate. “InuYasha?”

“Mmm-hmmmmm?”

“It's time.”

A/N: In case you're wondering, Kagome is about thirty-nine weeks, with Sango at thirty-eight.

As noted previously, I'm making the decision about names myself, so I would advise getting suggestions in no later than midnight, Friday, October 28, 2005…as I'm aiming to publish the final chapter on Saturday, October 29, 2005 (although there will be an epilogue). Again, there are two boys and one girl. Remember, I need three Japanese names with English translations.

I will take more suggestions for a name for Miroku and Sango's baby till Sango's ready to deliver, which will probably be in the epilogue. Sesshomaru's and Kagura's baby will be born in the epilogue, too.

Also, at the end of the epilogue, I will reveal the title for my next story, which will be rated R (or, I guess, Y).

Again, many thanks for all reviews…and I look forward to your future comments. Thank you!
