Chapter 2
“Get away from him! Get away!” Kagome thought Inu-Yasha must have been run through or gashed open by this girl, to just stand still with that shocked look on his face and her so close. “I'm serious! I'll...I'll shoot you!” She drew her bow and readied an arrow; it was a risky move with her aim, but she had to do something. The girl didn't seem to notice, neither did Inu-Yasha. They just kept standing there, the girl's head against his chest, saying something Kagome couldn't quite hear, and Inu-Yasha with his eyes wide open and his arms limp at his sides. A pang of worry hit her, and Kagome fired. The arrow whizzed through the air, and if the wind didn't take it, it was sure to hit with full force. There was a sickening sound of flesh being pierced as the arrow hit her squarely in the back; the girl let go of Inu-Yasha and fell in a crumpled heap in front of him. Kagome was sure she would be praised for her help, but she got exactly the opposite reaction.
“What have you done...” Inu-Yasha's voice was soft, like he couldn't even believe what had just happened.
“What do you mean, `what have I done'? I saved your life! And you don't even care! I was worried about you, you JERK! Doesn't that mean anything to you?”
“She was...she...and now she's gone...dead...”He still hadn't moved, and his voice was still that soft tone. When he looked up, Kagome thought maybe she saw tears welling in his eyes, but it was probably just the angle of the light. “I'll...now I'll never know...never...”
Just then, her motionless body began to unfold until she was lying on her back in the grass.
“Oh my god...she's still moving!” Kagome seemed utterly terrified. The body rose a little into the air, and seemed to levitate a moment. Then, slowly, the arrow started to blow away as dust. Once the last visible part was gone, her body jerked and the life came back to her in a large gasp. She lowered to the ground, the grass blowing as if in a slight breeze just below where she would land. She sat up and gave her head a little shake, then seemed to come around and realize where she was. Still sitting on the ground, she looked up into Kagome and Inu-Yasha's faces. Tears welled up in her eyes, then flowed down her cheeks; she looked right into Inu-Yasha's amber eyes and said, “You don't remember, do you, aniki? You don't remember me...” At which point she pulled her knees up to her chest and began to whimper quietly.
“I don't remember what?” Inu-Yasha seemed suddenly impatient, like she'd done something annoying. He'd clenched his fists into tight balls, and narrowed his eyes. She raised her eyes a little, looked from Kagome (who was suddenly very sorry for trying to kill her) to Inu-Yasha and sniffled.
“Your living shadow. ”
