There was always this charade. These women that he adored, that didn't mean nearly as much as he wanted everyone to think they did; these escapades that didn't mean as much to him as he wanted them to.
Port after port, it was the same put-on, the same façade.
What am I looking for?
And every time, they meant less.
What do I need?
Maybe this one will mean more. Maybe the next one will make this hollow ache stop. An inner deceit; the endless search for fulfillment. That missing piece that made him feel hollow and empty.
Certainly he'd find it in one of them, wouldn't he?
Then he could finally lay this to rest.
The woman who didn't return his affections would stop haunting him every waking moment.
...and maybe he could finally stop dreaming of him...
