Chapter 7: Another school

The bell dismissing class rung, and then and only then did Yuki actually wake up. Renae was paying no attention to him, when he groggily got up. She didn't notice until he sat up fully. She sat on the edge of the bed and grabbed his shoulder, letting him know that there was a friend nearby.

“Renae?” he spoke barely over a whisper.

“I'm here Yuki. Don't worry.” She said, putting a small smile on both of their faces.

Yuki put his large hand over her own, “I'm glad to see that you are ok.” She said.

“I'll be just fine.” He said, sounding a lot better. He took a deep breath and looked around the room, “How long have I been out?” He asked, looking up at her.

“Since lunch. School is almost over. There's one more class left in the day.” She said, sounding a little concerned.

He started to shift and get up off the bed, “Are you sure you're ok to get up? Shouldn't you rest for a bit longer?” She asked him as she stood up behind him and grabbed his arm softly.

He looked back at her, back at her bothered features. He let his arm slid out of her grasp, just a bit, till his hand clasped with her's, “Arigato, for worrying, But I'm fine.” He said with a smile.

She got the idea that `Arigato' meant thank you. She blushed a bit, but smiled.

“Come on, if we hurry, we can finish the last class for today.” He said, as he pulled her out the door and down the hall.

But first they headed down the staircase to the fountain, where he rinsed his hair of the dry blood. Renae scrubbed further back, considering she could see it better and careful mindful of the bump that sat there. He hissed in pain when she accidentally applied pressure to it.

“I'm sorry.” She said.

“Don't worry `bout it.” He said as he looked up at her with a side glance, “Do you think you can go into the locker room and grab me a towel?”

“Sure, I'll be right back.” She said, running to the girl's locker room nearby. She watched the students in their PE class for a moment or two, really wishing she had the class. Although the girls were wearing for what it looked like the bottom part of a bikini bathing suit and a white sweater, she may actually love this.

She returned back to Yuki, as he was finishing, and passed him the white towel. His hair was fully rid of the red essence and his natural color had returned. The silver had shined and was bright under the sun. He set the now pink towel down in the hamper that lead to the laundry room near the door of the locker rooms and looked back at her.

“Thank you.” He said, “We should probably head back now.”

“Yes, lets go.” She said as Yuki grabbed her hand and darted for the classroom.

They entered the class room and people swarmed around them, and asked all of these questions about how he is, one guy even had the nerve if they were now dating, considering that they were still holding hands when they came in the room.

Renae released his hand and walked over to Sei, “Everything ok?” He asked as she plopped down in the desk. He stood up and kneeled down at the edge of her desk.

“Everything's fine.” She said, smiling.

“You worry me.” He said as he stood up and ruffled her hair… well the best he could since it was up, as it always was. Even here, no one had seen her hair down yet.

“Children, please take your seat, you still have a while to go. Yuki, Renae, I am glad to see that both of you are alright. And I am glad you made it. The homework is on the board.” The teacher said. He was a heavy man, with eye brows that covered his eyes, and a mustache that covered his mouth.

They both wrote down the assignment and grabbed their books, and slipped them into their bags.

The bell rang after the lecture he gave about feudal times in the late 1200's later. Renae followed Yuki once out on the concrete pathway, he said he had somewhere to go before going home, and had asked if she wanted to go with him.

“That's fine with me. But where are we going?” She asked.

“Day care.” He whispered, making sure she was the only one who had heard.

She looked at him with a weird look on her face but went with it.

She waited on the curb while he went to get his bike from the garage. Once he pulled in around the corner, and parked in front of her, he passed her the helmet he lent her earlier that morning and helped her on. Then screeched off.

From a distance, a pair of eyes watched them.

“I don't believe it.” The figure spoke. “He never let me ride on his bike.” The figure, Samantha, was not happy when she saw what had taken place with that girl and her ex… well to her they were still together.

“And did you see the way he looked at her?” One of her friends asked her.

“That bitch is totally going to pay.” Samantha sneered as she watched the bike screech off.

~~

The day care was where he went to get away from Samantha and for fun, she never knew where he went on these days, and he didn't care. So far Renae was the only one who knew, and she had sworn to tell not a soul.

Yuki let her off the bike and he shut of the engine, and then walked the bike to the side walk. Setting up the lock and putting up the kick stand, he led Renae inside.

The minute the door opened, all the children ran to him and pushed him to the floor. Renae looked in astonishment as all the children hugged him and laughed with him. Eventually she couldn't help but smile. Considering for the injury earlier, he seemed fine now... and for that she was grateful. One of the children pulled on her skirt gently, causing her to look down.

“Your pretty, will you be playing with us too?” The little girl asked.

Renae bent down to the little girl's level and said, “Of course I will.” She smiled, as did the little girl. Renae stood up to her full length and extended her hand for the child to take.

Yuki had a boy in his arms, he looked over at Renae and was surprised, “They're taking a real liking to you. They normally don't adjust to strangers so easily.”

“Is she your girlfriend?” The little boy in his arms asked.

Both Renae and Yuki blushed, but said nothing, “Let's go out side and play.”

All the children jumped up and down with glee, forgetting the unanswered question. One after another they ran out side the door.

The day care lady came up and greeted Yuki, “Good after noon Yuki-kun, it is always a pleasure to see you here. And who is your lovely friend.”

Renae blushed again, “This is Renae, and she's my sister's pen pal. She's here from the states, visiting for six months.” He said as he placed his hands on her shoulders.

Renae bowed to the middle aged woman, “It's an honor to be here.” She said.

“This is not the woman you had described, I thought this was Samantha. Forgive me.” The woman said.

Yuki frowned, “Samantha and I are through.” He said as he looked off to the side.

The woman blinked, “Then maybe this girl could be the next.” She smiled playfully.

Another blush rose on Renae's features. And the woman walked away. Yuki released her shoulders and walked out side, Renae followed from behind.

The children were loving and sweet. But she couldn't help but notice that one was by itself in the sand box, so she tapped Yuki's shoulder, “What's up with the little girl over there?” She whispered into his ear.

Yuki looked to see what she was talking about, “Oh, that's Asagi. I don't know why, but she's always like that. People have tried to get her to play with the others but can't understand why she won't. She won't talk to any one.” Renae stood up and walked over to the little girl.

She fixed her skirt and sat next to the little girl on the sandbox, who didn't even look at her. She blinked at her, and looked down at the sand castle she was making.
“Hello Asagi,” She said sweetly and calmly.

Asagi looked at Renae from the corner of her eye, but said nothing. Renae frowned.

From a distance Yuki watched as Renae tempted to talk to the girl. He stared in awe, and interest. Samantha would never talk to a lonely girl… hell she hates kids, she wouldn't be able to stand it here.

Renae certainly was different… but why was she drawing him close?

“That's a pretty sand castle you made Asagi. But why don't you play with the other kids?”

She was amazed when she actually said something, “The others scare me, I don't like it here. Mommy only leaves me here because she doesn't want me.” Poor Asagi, that's why she's always alone.

“That's not true, who told you that?” Asagi looked up at the woman that tried to talk to her. Something about her voice, she really cares.

“Daddy did, and he left my mommy.” Tears started to build in her eyes.

“That's mean; your mommy loves you with all her heart. She would never leave you. Mommy has a lot to do, is all. She'll be back like she always does. And if that's how your daddy feels, then he doesn't deserve a sweet little girl like you.”

Asagi looked up with emotional eyes. Renae smiled down at her and opened her arms; the child sniffled and jumped into her open embrace.

“Now what do you say we go on over and play with the other kids, hmm?” Renae asked when the child pulled back, and rubbed her eyes.

“Ok.” She seemed unsure.

“Don't worry; I think they'll like you.” Renae said, trying to give the girl some confidence.

She set Asagi down on her feet, and extended her hand for her to latch onto. Then she led the girl over to the small group. Yuki just stared at her with a dumbfounded look.

Asagi at first hid behind Renae's leg. When another girl, came up to her with a ball in her arms and said, “Do you want to play with me?” That gave her the confidence to move away from Renae's leg and look up at her.

Renae smiled at her and nodded. She let go of her hand and watched her run off with a warm smile.

Renae sat down next to Yuki on the bench. He had never seen anyone try to get to a child that fast. Even he tried to talk to the girl, and failed.

“That was amazing.” He said, moving a bit closer to her.

Renae felt comfortable around him now, so she snuggled into his chest and rested her head on his shoulder.

A blush rose on both of their faces, but both relaxed.

“Comes with having two brothers, I guess.” She said. Watching the children play with careful eyes. Asagi… the lonely girl that no one was capable of talking to, was having a wonderful time.

Yuki smiled and rested his head on top of her's. Oh yeah, she was definitely drawing him in, and he was starting to like it.

He shifted once and hissed in pain. Renae sat up and moved away from him, “What's wrong?” She asked as he held his side.

“It's nothing. Just a little sore from that fight earlier.” He said, putting on a smile, to assure her… not working though.

Yuki reached out and patted her head before ruffling her hair the best he could. He looked at the pony tail on the top of her head. Her hair spilling over the band that held her hair in place, like an unchecked dark chocolate water fall. He grasped the elastic and gave it a gentle tug, but that's when she reacted. Moving back even more in such distress, and putting her hand up to cover the only disruption in her hair.

She looked away form him, and looked down at the ground, “Why do you keep it up?” He asked her.
“Just… something I've grown accustomed to. No one has ever seen me with my hair down… and I really don't want to start now.” She said, “Consider it a way of high respect. Umm… like how you told me that women here would wear many layers of kimonos to show ranking in power. Well, I keep my hair up to show power.”

He understood what she was saying… a form of respect. But still, it would be nice to see her with it down. `No pressure.' He thought to him self. Both stayed at that distance now, and both were silent.

They continued to watch the children, having fun and enjoying the mid winter day. It was cold today, and the sky was full of grey, white and black clouds.

Time seemed to pass by slowly for a bit, possibly due to the cold. Soon enough, the daze that Renae was put in was suddenly sprung out because of something cold on her hand. When she gazed down, a frozen water droplet sat on her bare skin. She lifted it and examined it, then looked up at the sky.

Small white puff balls floated down, landing on her face and school uniform, “Its snowing!” She heard the children cry. Bringing her eyes back down, she saw the children looking up and smiling, giggling and reaching their hands up and trying to catch some.

“Snow?” Renae asked under her breath. The last time she was in it, melted into rain too quickly, that doesn't count at all.

Yuki looked over to her, “You've never been in snow?”

”I haven't even heard of snow until I came here.”

Yuki blinked, “You serious?”

Renae met his eyes and nodded once, “Wow.” He responded.

Renae lifted her hand till it was parallel with the ground and caught a few in her hand, and smiled as she watched the small crystals melt into a small water puddle in her palm.

She shivered when a small breeze whipped through. Yuki saw this and removed his jacket and slipped the thick material over her shoulders. Renae looked at him and smiled, mouthing a thank you to him, and grasping the sides of the jacket and pulled it closer to her body.

Yuki stole the courage to move by her again, seeing that she was still cold from the waist down. Hell, even he hated the school girl's uniform. That short flimsy skirt that the school board wants them to wear… his question, why.

He draped his arm back over her shoulder, and he felt her snuggle into his body heat. He smiled as he rubbed her shoulder, adding friction and heat in that area. He heard her sigh into his chest, feeling her warm breath get caught in the fabric of his sweater.

Renae had never felt so calm before… hell she was the one to always be on the move, always fighting, never resting. But now… there was someone willing to help her, willing to sit with her, wanting her to have a good time… away from the violent school, away from the other violent schools surrounding her's. Sanctuary.

Yuki rested his head on top of hers once more, sighing softly.

As for Renae, she looked up to him the best she could without disturbing his movements, and smiled.

She jolted when she felt his hand on her head again. Her first thought was that he was going to remove her hair from the tie. That wasn't the case; instead, he stroked her head, going down the length of her hair that stopped slightly after her shoulders

Her hair was soft and tangles were nonexistent as he dug his fingers through the tresses of chocolate. She sighed again at the gentle pleasure. And she dozed off.
