Prologue/Chapter 1

Lightning rumbled.
A fearsome shape, head ending in two pointed ears, hissed as sparks raced from it's body, sending a wave of men and women flying through the air to land a good thirty meters away, charred and smoking. On a bluff, a man wearing an orange jumpsuit frowned, and turned to the woman at his side.
“This is the only way. Give me the child.”
She nodded wordlessly, handing him the squirming bundle. The man sighed, wishing he did not have to do this, but they would never be able to destroy this demon, only contain it, so…
His hands quickly formed a sequence of seals, before he placed them gently at the boy's side. The baby began to wail, as the demon froze in its tracks, screaming in outrage, body beginning to dissolve into vapor.
With a final move, the man clapped his hands together to end the seals, and there was a brilliant flash of blue light.
When it cleared, the man and demon were both nowhere to be seen, and the child continued to cry, tears running down his face and into the two lightning-shaped scars now cut into his cheeks.

Eleven years later…

Hiroto Satoshi sat quietly at his desk, watching the chaos unfold in the schoolhouse around him. Testing for graduation from the Academy was tomorrow, and most of the students were excitedly chattering about how well they would do.
Satoshi would have joined in the boasting, except that he had fallen asleep while listening to their teacher Seiyou lecturing on the importance of elemental attacks earlier. Satoshi wasn't very good at transforming, or even illusions, but he could throw a mean shuriken. Now if only he knew what they would be tested on…
A loud whack next to his head woke him from sleep. Seiyou stood there with an irritated expression on her face, hands on her hips.
“What is the meaning of this, Satoshi? Falling asleep in my class again? This is the third time this month!”
“Well, too bad its so boring, old lady!” Satoshi snapped. Everyone knew Seiyou hated her job, but she had never been talented enough to become anything more than a Chuunin. Chuunin were higher in level than Genin, but it was rumored that Seiyou had slept with her opponent in the last exam to pass, and no one put it past her.
“Detention.” Seiyou sniped, and went back to the front of the room. Several of Satoshi's classmates tittered, but when she began to lecture again, they fell silent.
Satoshi closed his eyes and went back to sleep.

Detention was surprisingly simple. He had to scrub all the blackboards in the school, but he had done it before and it wouldn't take long. Seiyou watched with an eagle eye as he worked, but after it was done, looked at him seriously.
“Satoshi, I know you don't like me, but if you don't work hard you'll never graduate.” She said. “Do you want to still be here when you're twenty years old?”
“Of course not!” Satoshi snapped. “I'll be a great ninja! In fact, I'll even become the Leader of this village someday! Everyone will acknowledge me!”
“Well, you're not off to a great start.” She said. “Come on, I'll get you something to eat. It's late.”
Satoshi blinked at her in surprise, but followed her to the ramen bar down the street, and was treated to a bowl of beef noodles. Maybe…
Maybe she wasn't so bad after all. Not that he liked her or anything, but she was being awfully nice.
He looked at her sideways, but she was busy stirring the noodles in her diet ramen around, so he kept silent.
He didn't want her to revert back to the demon lady after all!
“Good luck on the test tomorrow.” She said, after paying the bill, and Satoshi stared after her in surprise.
Luck?
He wouldn't need luck! He was brilliant! He would show them how good he was! He would!

Seiyou sighed as she closed the door to her apartment. She knew, of course, as did all the other adults, who Satoshi really was, and what was sealed inside of him. She shuddered. It had killed Jun, her husband, oh, so many years ago, but the pain had never faded.
In all honesty, she would love it if he failed, but then she would have to face him for another year. It was almost too much to bear!
No wonder no one liked Satoshi. She knew he didn't have any friends, any blind bat could see that, but she didn't care.
He was a demon…
But hopefully, he would take her words to heart and work harder so she could foist him off on someone else. A Jounin would take care of someone like Satoshi better, in any case.
Maybe someone like Wataru or Matsuba or Shirona… she knew Daigo and Mikuri were off in the Water Country doing important work there, and unavailable.
If only…

The next morning, Satoshi combed his unruly hair neatly and dressed in his customary jean shorts and blue sandals, his red-and-white jacket and of course, his red-and-white lucky cap.
He would show them today! He would!
He waited quietly in line with the rest of the students, not really listening to them. None of them liked him anyway, though he wasn't sure why. Sure, he had played a few pranks on them, but surely hair dyes and itching powders would come off quickly…
His fingers sparked a bit, and he smiled. At least if they asked for elemental attacks, he was good. He had practiced his Thundershock attack a lot!
“Next!”
Satoshi walked in the door, facing the panel of three teachers. Seiyou sat on the left, Daisuke in the center, and Machisu on the right.
“Today we will be testing on the Transformation technique, followed by the Clone technique, as we have been observing your weapon skills.” Daisuke said, glancing down at his notes. “First, please turn into Seiyou here.”
Satoshi nodded, making the seals. “Henge no Jutsu!”
A puff of smoke drifted around his form, and Seiyou nearly screamed when she saw what had happened.
Certainly, Satoshi was a reasonable copy, but where - where were all her clothes?
“Oops?” Satoshi asked, releasing the transformation.
Machisu hastily slapped a hand over his nose to stop the bleeding, and Seiyou penciled a large, fat zero in red ink on her scorecard.
This was not going well…
Satoshi's clone technique managed to make two duplicates, but one fell over almost as instantly as it had appeared, so it was no go.
Seiyou sighed. It seemed they were stuck with him for another year…

“No!” Satoshi screamed. “This… this can't be!”
“I'm sorry, but you'll have to try again next year.” Daisuke said, not feeling very sorry at all. After all, the demon had killed many of his friends as well…
Who would ever choose to let something like that become a ninja, anyway?
