HISTORY

Before Pokeballs were invented, the transport and capturing of Pokemon
was one of the largest challenges facing trainers and potential
masters. Pokemon would have to travel at their master's side, causing
undue strain and weariness to both the Pokemon and the trainer, and
made the capture and training of some Pokemon, particularly water
Pokemon, next to impossible for some. Most attempts at finding a way
to transport these creatures ranged from the disastrous to the
laughable.

Among other problems facing a trainer was a wounded Pokemon. After a
battle, an exhausted or wounded Pokemon in remote areas had little in
the way of medical or recuperative help, and such skills were
considered a required for a Pokemon trainer for a long time. Many
Pokemon even died because proper care could not be given to them.

This all changed in ways people at the time would never have dreamt
possible. In 1959, the scientist Nicholas Redwood created the device
that would eventually come to be known as the Pokeball.

Professor Redwood was, originally, trying to find a way to instantly
transport living creatures through time and space, allowing them to
travel miles literally in no time at all. Rumors are that every plant
and animal he attempted this with met with a messy demise. Eventually,
he began his experiments on Pokemon, where he stumbled across the
circumstances that would lead to the Pokeball.

In every Pokemon he tested, the subject would revert to an energy
form, but not move from the device in which it was at when changed.
When released from their energy state, the Pokemon seemed unharmed.

The scientific community, upon hearing of Redwood's results, was
extremely skeptical, but he quickly put such notions to rest. Once his
findings were verified, the world was thrown into an uproar of
amazement, and people immediately searched for a way to put this
discovery to use. Thus, the process that would eventually lead to the
Pokeball had begun.

It took several years of continuous testing and experimentation before
a final design and form was decided upon. After repeated trials, the
Pokeball was perfected, and Pokemon training was revolutionized. The
Pokeball has been credited as the single greatest technological
achievement of human history.

PROFESSOR REDWOOD

For a man who created the greatest and most commonly used device in
the world, very little is actually known about Professor Nicholas
Redwood. It is known that he was born in Lavender Town. His mother was
a professional Grass-Type Pokemon raiser, but it is not exactly known
who is father is. There is evidence that his father may have been a
high ranking member of Team Rocket in its founding days, although this
controversial theory is scoffed at by many. However, it is not known
even to this day where Redwood got his funding before his
breakthrough, and the theory of his father being a member of Team
Rocket explains his revenue to many.

Throughout his entire life, Redwood was blessed with an incredible
genius, while cursed with a disturbing dementia. Both of these aspects
showed up frequently in his experiments and other works. Also, unlike
other scientists, Redwood did not seem to have any ethical limits to
what he would do. Even even the most jaded person would consider many
of his experiments disturbing and frightening. It was because of these
things, and also because of his reclusive nature, that others
generally saw him in less than a respectful way in the scientific
community. It was only after the creation of the Pokeball that he was
given the respect that many today feel he deserved all his life.

Even after the creation of the Pokeball, and the fame it garnered,
Redwood was a complete and total recluse, speaking to very few people,
and refusing countless requests for interviews and apprenticeships
that were thrown his way. This gave him a mysterious look to many
people, which only served to increase his fame and admiration even
more.

Professor Redwood himself pursued many other experiments afterwards,
many which were rumored tamper with the very laws of physics. He
disappeared mysteriously during a private testing of a device he had
named `Chronosphere.' Because of his stellar contribution to Pokemon
training and raising, and due to his other, more shady experiments,
many see Professor Redwood with a fearful admiration.

SPECIFICS

The Pokeball utilizes the MTE (Matter to Energy) system that Redwood
had perfected. Upon making contact with the Pokemon, the cells of its
body are rearranged and reconstructed into pure energy, where it is
stored within the Pokeball by a series of magnets and mirrors, which
help keep the Pokemon in its energy state.

The change from solid form to energy form seems to be a very thrilling
and enjoyable process to Pokemon in general. Many Pokemon, however,
have shown displeasure for this process, and have refused to be
confined in a Pokeball because of it. It should be noted that there
has never been a single reported case of a Pokemon ever coming to harm
in the process of entering or exiting a Pokeball.

The release mechanism for the Pokeball is voice - activated. The most
common voice commands used are the Pokemon's name, often followed by
the ever-popular phrase "I choose you!" Most Pokemon trainers prefer
to throw the Pokeball whiling giving this voice command to add to the
dramatic impact.

Once deploying (or attaining) its payload, the Pokeball hones in on
its owners energy signal, and returns to them with the help of a set
of small, Gravity Manipulation (GM) generators located within the
Pokeball.

One of the more recent advancements is the Pokeball's ability to
`shrink' itself into a compact size. By using the GM generators to
pull the molecules that make the Pokeball up closer together, the
device can actually decrease in size without losing any of its mass or
even effecting the Pokemon within it.

The substance a Pokeball is made out of is a fiberglass - tempered
steel combination, which is incredibly durable, although not
indestructible. Should the Pokeball actually suffer a fracture or
breach, it will automatically release the Pokemon inside of it
immediately. Tests and real - life accounts have given this emergency
system a %100 percent success ratio.

Pokeballs will only work on Pokemon. Any other animal or plant will be
completely unaffected by it, at least any further than the effects of
having a ball thrown at it would have. Humans are also unaffected by
Pokeballs, something which nobody is in any hurry to change.

ENVIRONMENT WITHIN POKEBALL

As mentioned earlier, many were fearful of the effects MTE system
would have on the Pokemon. However, repeated research, as well as the
Pokemon's attitude towards the devices, has shown that the process is
comfortable to the Pokemon and, at times, even beneficial.

While a Pokemon is in the Pokeball, its body is in stasis, even though
its mind is still perfectly lucid. This is the best thing a trainer
with a hurt or exhausted Pokemon can ask for, as it allows them all
the time they need to get the proper assistance they need with little
or no worries. Transferring a critically wounded Pokemon into a
Pokeball has saved countless Pokemons' lives.

Although nowhere near a substitute for a stay at a Pokemon center, a
prolonged stay in a Pokeball can help a tired Pokemon rest up and
regain its energy. This is mainly useful when the trainer is in a
remote, unpopulated region, and has no Pokemon center to turn to.

OTHER INFORMATION

--With Professor Redwood's disappearance, the patent for the Pokeball
was turned over to the newly formed Pokemon League, according to
Redwood's instructions. The Pokemon League also chose the colors of
the Pokeball. Rumors that these were the two favorite colors of
Professor Redwood are, in fact, untrue.

--The Pokeball is truly a marvel of modern technology. However, to
date, none of the technology used in the Pokeball can be effectively
and practically used outside of it. This is mainly because the
technology used is extremely fragile when made any larger than the
size used for the Pokeball. Although tireless research is being
conducted in attempts to incorporate this amazing technology into
everyday life, it is a slow process.

--There have been extremely rare cases of Pokemon actually managing to
release themselves from the Pokeball. Studies have shown that this in
not due to any known fault within the Pokeball itself, and, as of yet,
no explanation has been found.

DISCLAMER(S)

Nintendo owns Pokemon and all related characters. This fic is owned by
the writer, which would be me. The rights to the Beatles' songs are
owned by, can you believe it, Michael Jackson!

... I'm not kidding!

AUTHOR'S NOTES:

See, this is the fic you get when you flip between the History Channel
and the an anime tape while waiting for your dinner to finish cooking.
Great, isn't it?

Still, while writing this, I could not help but think that Nintendo
had actually, somewhere at some time, released actual technical and
historical outlines for a Pokeball. If that's the case, I haven't seen
the bleeding thing, and this is my version of such things.

If they haven't, then I just wasted five seconds of your life... or
ten, if you are a slow reader. Sorry.

Oh, yeah, and sorry about throwing in the Chronosphere into this. I
couldn't resist. As for Professor Redwood having such a tangible `Dr.
Mengela' aspect to him, well, I refer you once again to the `History
Channel' thing I was talking about.

... And, once again, let us all be thankful I do not write children's
stories.
