Disclaimer-I will never own Cale and/or Anubis. Everyone belongs to his or her respective owners and producers. I will also never own the The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu, or the Tale of Genji Scrolls, done by various artists. The decorated scrolls look good, and The Tale of Genji is a very good read, but I cannot claim them as my work. I would also like to thank all those who have edited, read, and/or reviewed my stories. Without you guys, this work would not be possible...

Gift
Isabel Night

Do the dead remember their last birthday?
The final celebration before they died
Are they able to smell the rice steaming?
Or view the streamers that roofed the sky?

Would they forget the samurai banners?
The laughter, the joy, the pride
Should the departed consider all of these?
Even the books they once prized?

The warrior dolls were displayed in your room
The Tale of Genji by your side
You always had your nose in that book
Even when the fireworks zoomed on by

The evening of your birthday
When the full moons shone in the sky
We chatted about the Genji monogatari emaki
And learned that you wished to see the fragments before you died

I wanted to give you a special gift
A private function for only our eyes
Goto was holding a special viewing-
So I thought we should stop on by

I forgot to acquire tickets-
Do you remember sneaking inside?
I’ll never forget that close call with security
I’m glad that Darkness hinders prying eyes

I know we had to rush our visit
But I wanted to try again
One year later the war came-
Was that promise a waste of time?

Now on your birthday-
Another viewing will be held inside
I finally bought the tickets we needed-
A gift you should have seen with your eyes

But I’ll walk the busy streets of Tokyo
And wait in that congested mortal line
I promise to tell you everything I see-
As you watch through heaven’s colorless eye
