Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Eunomia Episode 004

This has been utter hell. Taken me longer to do this one than the three
previous episodes. I hope to whatever deity you believe in that it makes
sense.

Thanks to: The Barenaked Ladies, their music has helped immensely.

Light was just gently breaking through the blinds over the windows
in Nephrite's new apartment. It flitted through the gaps and striped
Nephrite's face. He stretched his arms and opened his eyes. /Who,/ he
wondered silently, /should I be today?/ Randomly grabbing the nearest thing
to him, he combined sounds and rolled his new name over his tongue. "'Oda
Natsemuki,' nice ring to it." He slipped his legs over the side of the
bed and proceeded to stretch more as he stood up. He shook out his hair
and reached over to turn on the radio. It looked sunny enough, but he
actually planned on taking a trip to his old human abode. Maybe if he
restarted his life where he left off, he could regain some of his former
stature. He heard the news and shut the radio off.

He walked into the kitchen and opened the refrigerator. He had no
food, nothing to drink, either. He'd have to engage in that human activity
know as "shopping." He slammed the refrigerator door shut and mumbled about
the stupidity of the human race. Luckily, the apartment was furnished so
he sat down in a chair in front of a JVC television set. He looked around
for the remote and found it under another chair. He turned on the TV and
propped his feet up. Nothing else to do, really.

Nephrite noticed a reflection in the TV and blinked. It didn't
remove itself. He blinked again, still it was there. He rubbed his eyes
wearily, but the image stayed there. After blinking several more times, he
believed the figure was indeed in his apartment and not an early morning
trick. He did not turn around. "Whoever you are, I suggest you leave now."

"I'm sorry," apologized a female voice insincerely, "but you'll
have to come with me. We've been waiting a long time to put you on trial."
He heard the tapping of boots to an unidentifiable rhythm.

"And who exactly are you?" He asked, staring at the blank TV.

"Your defense," answered the voice.

He smiled and shook his head. "Then how do you figure into the 'we?'"

"Come, and all will be explained," replied the voice.

He turned around. He noted the fuku she wore and the key she held.
"Sailor Pluto, I assume." He bowed and continued, "How nice to make your
acquaintance. Now, I'd love to stay and chat, but I'm afraid that just isn't
possible." He smiled at her. "SHHUUU-AAAAAH!"

Pluto held up a hand, and the attack merely flowed around her.
"We've had ample time to study what little records there are of your attacks.
You cannot defeat me, besides, I'm on 'your' side, remember?"

"Heh, that's a joke. When has a senshi been on my side?"

"Naru," replied Sailor Pluto, as if that once word explained it all.

"BAH!" he dismissed. "Do not speak to me of that girl, of that
mistake." He sighed. "I could've found another way of getting out of Beryl's
grasp without causing her so much pain." A tear fell onto the floor and Pluto
followed it with her eyes until it soaked into the carpet below her feet.

"Come," demanded Sailor Pluto.

"NEVER!" yelled Nephrite, "I will never go with you. I shall stay
where I am."

Sailor Pluto shook he head and extended her key. With a flash the pair
was gone and the living room of the apartment was devoid of any activity, except
for an invisible microchip, softly humming to itself.

"Auty!" cried Chromite as he turned on the lights in the apartment.
He noted that Autunite was still sleeping comfortably. "Dammit. Man can sleep
through everything. I guess I'll just teleport over." Concentrating his
energy, Chromite teleported into the bedroom of Nephrite's new apartment.
Nephrite was nowhere, but the walls were scorched. "There was a battle here."

"Not exactly, General Chromite," replied a female voice coming
from no specific direction.

"The hell?"

"I'm not here, Chromite. I am already in the future. This is a
computer program based on my knowledge of events surrounding the Dark
Kingdom and the trial being held in Crystal Tokyo to see that those who are
to blame are brought to justice. Nephrite has been taken. He had shown valor
in an attack on Sailor Moon's best friend at the time, Naru. He might
receive mercy. You, as near as we can tell, were never involved with the
attack on Earth. Although the possibility of your testimony being needed is
high, neither you, nor General Autunite, shall be tried."

"Return him," demanded Chromite in no uncertain terms.

"That is far beyond my functions," answered the voice.

"Tell whoever took him to return him. Now."

"While I doubt Sailor Pluto will agree, I shall send the message.
If you need further information, this program will be available. Simply
teleport into the apartment and I shall be activated. Have a nice day,
General Chromite, may your life on Earth be serene."

"Stupid computers."

"I heard that."

"Shut up."

"Yes, General Chromite."

Waving a dismissive hand at the room in general, Chromite teleported
out of the apartment and into his own.

Kathrine tugged on her socks as she sat on her futon. She fumbled
with a clean pair of panties and leaned over to grab her skirt and training
bra. She absolutely despised the training bra, but was not allowed to go to
school without it. Damn Japanese dress code. She jumped around to get into
her skirt and fastened it at the waist. She then glared at the training
bra and fastened it around her chest. She cursed at it as she moved her
arms up in down to get it to fall into just the right position as not to
stick into her at various places. She the retrieved her uniform shirt and
pulled that on over the worst invention known to woman. They said it was
invented by a guy, which just made sense. Leave it to a man to produce a
needed article of clothing with such a shoddy and uncomfortable design.

Stretching, Kathrine came out of her room and walked into the
small dining room. He grandmother looked up. "Your grandfather is still
asleep, so be quiet. I made some miso soup for you." She handed it to
Kathrine. Kathrine bowed politely and sat down to eat it.

"Don't slurp," said her grandmother, as Kathrine was finishing up
the soup. "And make sure you be careful at school today. We don't need a
repeat of your fainting spell. You grandfather has good insurance, honey,
but they'll only pay for so much. So if you feel faint, just sit down,
take a load off, and if the teachers have any problems, tell them to call
me and I'll set them straight."

"Yes, yes, I'll be fine," shouted Kathrine as she skipped out the
door.

"Still," said the voice of her grandmother behind her, "Do be
careful." She came out and waved as Kathrine skipped out past the corner,
whistling a song she had heard once before. She seemed to think the
title had Jesus in it-

*CRACK*

Kathrine fell in a heap and blinked up into the sky as she heard
cursing to her side. The voice started cursing at her in Japanese. She could
only make out a few things. Suddenly, her view was interrupted by a girl
no more than a year older than her. "Baka desu ka?" asked the girl in
Japanese.

"Huh?" asked Kathrine, far too confused to try translating. "What's
that?"

The girl snuffed at her dismissively. "Ah, so the idiot is
Amerikajin."

"I'm American, what of it?" said Kathrine defiantly while
brushing her skirt, attempting to get it clean.

The girl shrugged as Kathrine pulled herself to her feet. "Well,
it's just obvious that they don't teach people how to watch where they walk
in America." Now that the girl was out of the shadow, Kathrine could make
her out better. She wasn't uncute as much as she was unkempt. She had
piercing violet eyes, and light violet hair. The violet hair rang a bell,
but she couldn't remember why. "Anyways," said the girl, "I'm Nagiko.
You're just lucky you didn't piss off one of my non-English speaking friends.
They'd have kicked your ass without a bit of respite. What's your name?"

"Name's Kathrine Blair Callahan, and you speak English very well,"
Kathrine complemented as she bowed very properly.

Nagiko rolled her eyes as both girls started to walk again towards
their obvious mutual destination. "Not my choice. The Morimoto clan has
its hand in almost every corporation in the country."

"Morimoto!?" asked Kathrine. Morimoto was Kazuo's name, and didn't
she say she had a niece named Nagiko? "Morimoto as in Kazuo Morimoto?"

"Yes, do you know her?"

"A bit. I go to the crown with my friends. I usually hang out with
Usagi, Ami, Mak-"

Nagiko coughed and shook her head. "Bloody goody-two-shoes, the lot
of 'em. Usagi's just a ditz. Makoto would be cool if she wasn't falling
all over the place for this guy or that guy. Don't even wanna get me started
on Ami. Only cool one in the bunch of 'em is Minako. I spent some time with
her in London."

"That would explain the accent and the British platitudes," Kathrine
laughed out.

The girl chuckled lightly. "Aye, s'pose it does. 'Ow 'bout you?
You ever been anywhere else than Japan?"

As the pair walked through the gates of 10th Street Junior High,
and Usagi et al spotted Kathrine, Nagiko waved and made a hasty retreat
after a small wave from Minako, who had recognized Kathrine's companion.
Kathrine joined the group and they went inside together.

Kathrine's palms felt extremely sweaty as she approached her next
class. It was band, and her clarinet case hung at her side, gripped by her
hand, though it willed itself to slip off. She had heard that the Japanese
were so much better at instruments than Americans were. If this was true
she'd be resigned to simply play the instrument at home. Music had always
been a sort of refuge, though it would cease to be if what she heard was
true.

Kathrine swallowed and walked through the door. She was immediately
blasted by sounds from all the instruments. The conductor was not in sight,
and the dissonance raged on. One by one, pairs of eyes turned towards her
and the music stopped. The music was quickly replaced by hush whisperings
and in it she thought she heard a familiar voice.

Her instincts were correct as she turned to see a violet haired
girl playing guitar. "Yo, Kath. Welcome to band."

Kathrine blinked and looked around. "Where's the director?"

"Oh? Yamaguchi-sensei is probably in his office. You see, we
do whatever for half the time. Y'know, practice whatever we want, hell,
we can even trade instruments, or compose pieces. Now, when that time is
up, we all play together like a normal ensemble. Now me, I'm only here for
the jazz and rock pieces, otherwise I sit back and relax," Nagiko explained.

"Sure you don't want eat outside?" called Minako.

"Nah," replied Kathrine, "My allergies will kill me, I'll just-"

"THANK GOD!" cried a voice, whose owner hugged Kathrine tightly.
"Kathrine," he let go, and Kathrine could see it was her brother. "I hopped
a plane from Dallas and-"

"YOU DID WHAT? How the hell did mom let you get away with that?"
shouted Kathrine. By this time people were staring. Kathrine blushed and
lowered her voice. "How did you get this past mom?"

Kevin's eyes died as she repeated her question. "Mom's gone, Kat,
she's totally gone. I told her I was flying to Tokyo and using her credit
card, and what did she say? 'Have a good time, honey, say hi to your
grandparents for me.' She then went on to mumble about butterflies! She's
been like this for days. I just couldn't stand it anymore. I'm sure Dad's
parents already found out and are on their way. I just need to tell you
that... we... we lost her, Kat." He shook his head.

Kathrine's mouth twitched slightly. The tray in her hand made a loud
crashing noise as it slipped out of her limped hands and bounced on the floor
below her. It was about that time all hell broke loose.

At least the place wasn't crawling with rats. At least it wasn't
cold or damp. Hell, pending the outcome of the trial, Nephrite was assigned
VIP quarters. Far beyond adequate, far too lavish. Yet, still, it was a
prison cell, and everybody knew it. He was a prisoner of some new Japanese
Empire Sailor Moon had created. This was obviously all to make him feel
better before he was sentenced to die and was executed in the public square
for all the masses to see. "This is an absolute monarchy, isn't it?" he
mumbled outloud to no one in particular.

"Frankly," came a voice from one of the adjoining chambers that held
a door out to the corridor, "If you think you're going to be tortured or
executed, you can forget it. For your kind we use love and forgiveness.
Truly horrible punishments for such as you."

He waved a hand at his guard, the newly made senshi, Sailor Aries.
"Oh, go screw yourself, Aries."

"Hey, you know me, Nephy-baby," she leaned over so that her face was
close to his. "I would, but I might mess up the fuku, and it costs the
equivalent of a developing nation's economy to get one of these things
dry-cleaned."

Nephrite clapped slowly and sarcastically. "To quote a friend of mine,
'your humour is like a dull spoon inserted up the rectum.'"

Aries frowned. "What a truly delightful image..."

August 20 1996 12:00 PM NST

No sooner had Kathrine dropped her tray, than a giant swirling
mass of black cloud appeared at a corner of the cafeteria. A voice rang
out, "I am the Doctor of Destruction. One of you has contracted a deadly
disease and must die... Kathrine Blair Callahan."

"I tend to think not!"

The monster turned from Kathrine to face the voice.

"I am Sailor Pluto and I cannot allow you to harass this girl
or the Sailor Senshi. DEATH SCREAM! TIME PORTAL!"

Black.

August 20 2999 3:00 PM NST

Kathrine rubbed her eyes and stretched. Obviously she had been
sleeping. It must have been just a dream. 'Crap,' she thought, 'now I'll
have to go to school again.'

"Oh, good, you're awake."

Kathrine blinked and opened her eyes. This wasn't her room, this
wasn't her house, and that was definitely not her grandmother. "Wh, where
am I? Who are you?"

"You are in the fifth VIP quarters on the 32nd floor of the
Crystal Palace located in Crystal Tokyo, Japan, Earth. As for who I am,"
Kathrine blinked more and the figure began to clarify into a woman with
long violet hair who was dressed in a black pinstriped business suit.
"I," she continued, "am Hanashi Nagiko, also known as Sailor Gemini, Neo
Queen Serenity's Minister of Formal Affairs."

"Neo Queen whatyhoo?"

"Usagi."

"You're kidding?"

"Sometimes I wish I was."

August 20 2999 4:25 PM NST

"This Court will come to order. The Honorable Sailor Mesthos
presiding," yelled the bailiff, "All rise."

A woman with silver hair and a white fuku walked in carrying
several data pads and hand link. She walked up the stairs to her
crystal desk. "You may be seated." When everyone was seated she flipped
through the data pads. "Now, I've read your opening statements and I have
to agree with the prosecution that the defendant must be locked up without
possibility of bail."

"Objection," called Sailor Pluto, "My client has nowhere to run
that can not be tracked down. He is not a flight risk. Where would he
have to go?"

"While I respect your professional judgment, Sailor Pluto, I
must also respect mine, and mine comes first. Defendant is remanded to
custody without bail. Next Case."

August 20 2999 4:45 PM NST

Usagi slumped up against a wall. "We're going to die in here."

"Really, Usagi," replied Ami, "we'll find a way out of here. Have
you tried transforming?"

"No use," said Makoto as she walked up to Ami. "There's something
in the air that's stopping it. I'm not sure where we are, or why we're here,
but I remember seeing Pluto before I blacked out. Maybe she saved us."

"Or maybe we've been captured."

"I doubt that, we would've been fried senshi dumplings. No, this
has a familiar look about it."

Usagi smiled. "At least Rei isn't here."

A door creaked open. "She'll be along shortly."

"Nagiko?" asked Minako.

"You know who I am?" inquired the new arrival in the pinstriped
suit.

"That long hair and perfect accent may fool some people, but not
me."

"Well... This is odd..."

August 20 2999 4:50 PM NST

One level below, Sailor Pluto cursed mightily, thanking the time
stream that she was alone. This whole thing was turning into shit. It was
like a Peter David novel she once read...

She got up and staggered over to the console after throwing her
scotch on the rocks back into the assembler, where it promptly smashed and
dissolved with an irritated whine. She stabbed at a big yellow button and
a screen blinked to life. A brunette who looked to be in her early twenties
yawned. "Pluto, the hell is this for? I was just about to stop a-"

"Shut up, Kathrine, now."

"You're drunk. I can smell it through the screen."

"What of it? No, just listen. I forgot about the dual Magic's in the
same time stream. Minako, the one from 1996, knows the 1996 Nagiko, and I was
stupid and had Gemini guard you and and..." she stopped and threw up before
passing out onto the carpet.

"Shit," came from the console before the screen blinked off.

August 20 2999 5:00 PM NST

The brunette strolled lightly into the room and looked around. Usagi,
Ami, Makoto, Minako. No Rei though, but her sources had told her as much.
Nagiko was in the corner with a bewildered expression on her face. "Hello.
My name is Kat. Sailor Gemini, under orders of Sailor Pluto, please vacate.
I'm taking over here."

"Uhm, you do have pro-"

"Code 4-97DKIHFDHJ98JE7."

"Aye, Sir."

When she exited and the door had closed, Kat turned back to the group.
"You've been here before. However, that's not for another six months. This
will get confusing so bear with me. You are here to testify for or against
General Nephrite, who stands accused of war crimes against humanity. We can't
use your future selves, here and now, because their memories are more than a
thousand years old. Yours are only about a year old. Rei is not here because
we could not track her. We think it has something to do with her psychic
energies, but we do not know. We have a team in 1996 looking for her the old
fashioned way. Any questions?"

Ami was the first to snap out of the shock and asked the main question
hovering about in the room, "But I thought Nephrite was dead. Are you saying
that he is, in fact, not dead?"

"I am saying precisely that," answered Kat. "He is alive and well on
one of the other floors of the palace-"

"I thought this place looked familiar," cried Makoto, "This is the
Crystal Palace. Duh, I should have realized that. So I was right, Pluto did
save us... Say, where's Kath?"

Kat repressed a grin. "She's staying here with us. She's too young and
too weak yet to fight with you. She needs training that Chibi-usa had
inherently. She'll meet up with you at the trial, but when you are sent back
to 1996, she won't be going back with you. She'll be staying here to undergo
the training I spoke of."

"Ahem," coughed Ami, "I hate to break up your plan, but don't you
think that her grandparents will notice their granddaughter is gone?"

"What granddaughter? It's not as easy to erase a person as it is to
create one, like we did with Chibi-usa, but it can be done. No one will miss
her besides you. I'll have to deal with her brother though, he unfortunately
made the trip as well, as you may remember."

They hadn't remembered that little detail until it was brought up.
"What about him? He certainly can't be trusted to keep a secret."

"I thought of that. He's not awake yet, or wasn't at last report, I
should be able to send him back to the USA without trouble. I think he'll
dismiss the entire plane trip as a dream. Besides, his grandparents will
never believe his mother. Now, come along, I have to escort you to your
real quarters, then we can discuss what will be expected of you during the
actual trial. Come along."
