GUIDE TO DUBBING SAILOR MOON

Thank you so much for your time and energy involved in this project. Please use the following as tips and guidelines to help with a proper translation and most importantly, editing of the original Japanese script.

1. The target audience for Sailor Moon falls somewhere between the ages of two and seven. No one over that age watches this series, so therefore that is the age we must keep in mind when editing and dubbing this show.

2. Japanese names are too hard to pronounce. Therefore, please use this guide to create a dubbed name for each character. We have provided two examples below to help you.

Example one: Michiru

Step one is to look at the name and try and choose a familiar name that appears similar, though not necessarily pronounced alike. In this case, the name "Michelle" looks like "Michiru."

Example two: Setsuna

Sometimes when there are no names which look like the Japanese name. In this case, pick the first name that comes into your head. I think "Trista" is a good replacement for "Setsuna," don't you? Granted both of these examples leave you with two extra syllables, as these characters are referred to "Michiru-san" and "Setsuna-san" by most of the cast, but I'm sure you'll think of something clever to deal with that.

3. In reference to the last guideline, never use the endings "chan" "san" or "sama" at the end of a character's names. Small North American children have no idea what these endings mean and if they hear them, they may become confused and think this is a foreign animated show.

4.When they henshii (change from people to Sailor Soldiers), Sailor Moon characters may utter such phases as "make-up." Cut this out. It sounds bad, and doesn't make any sense. Should that leave you with an extra two lip movements, you may replace with such phases as "Let's go!" or "Transform!"

5. Any consumption of an alcoholic drink shall be referred to as "drinking juice." A drunken state should be referred to as "having too much juice."

6. Whenever the characters Haruka and Michiru or Uranus and Neptune appear in a scene, the word "cousin" must appear that leave five times in the script of that scene. It is imperative that ever character of the cast know that these two are cousins, even if they have never seen them before.

7. Small children do not know what coffee is, nor do we want them to hear about it because they may become addicted to caffeine at an early age. Please replace the word "coffee" with "hot chocolate" whenever it appears.

8. We want the characters of Sailor Moon to talk modern. When choosing a word, use cool up-to-date phraseology. In the case of exclamations of excitement you may use "Groovy!" Girls who find a male attractive may refer to him as a "hunkasaurus." Finally, if every a character is questioning another's sanity, they may apply the term "trippin'."

9. If there seems to be a developing of romance, even if the form of a childhood crush, between a questionable pair of characters, such as Chibiusa and Helios, make sure the audience knows they are simply "special friends."

10. The choosing of proper voice actors is important. Remember, that Usagi's character is somewhat of a baby. For this character, we will need someone who can give you the most high-pitched whiny voice you can find. Haruka is tomboy, so pick someone who can speak in a low, very-masculine sounding voice, even if you can't understand a word she says when she talks in that tone. Setsuna's voice is described as "deep and husky," but that might be intimidating, so just anyone with a light bubbly tone will do. Luna is the guardian cat, therefore choose someone with an older voice so she sounds more like she's in charge. (We will deal with the dubbing of the S movie scene where she appears as a young lady when we get there.)

11. If a female character's has too much of their chest exposed, simply zoom in on the face of the character. Trust me, no one will notice.

12. We want the show to be free of violence. Anytime a character strikes another character, this needs to be cut, regardless of the reason, severity, or lack thereof for the striking.

13. If any attack names sound questionable such as "Dead Scream" please adjust them accordingly. We may have further incidents of this kind of thing if we try to dub and edit the Stars series. I will update you with further details.

14. It is okay to change character's genders, as long as the audience has no way of telling the gender was changed.

15. Remember, characters do not die. They may get "pulled into the negaverse" or "knocked out," but they do not die. (This is too violent.)
