Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Chronicles of Mobius book 2 ❯ Sonic meets Nikós ( Chapter 4 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Sonic and Sally sat in the throne room, listening to the daily report for the kingdom of Knothole.

Sonic slumped in his seat and drummed his fingers on his throne's armrest as Bunnie prattled on with boring stuff, at least he thought it was boring.

Sally gently nudged Sonic's side. "I know, but pretend to be interested." She whispered.

Rotor came in and bowed down.

"You have a message for us, sir Rotor?" Sally asked.

"Yes, your majesty." Rotor replied. "A citizen from Tashistan has an urgent message for you and king Sonic."

"Bring him in." Sally said.

Rotor quickly left the room and brought back Nikós.

Nikós bowed down. "Your majesties."

Sonic softly gasped when he saw Nikós. "He looks like Manic." He thought.

Sally glanced at Sonic and realized he was too lost in his thoughts to say a word.

"What brings you to the palace, sir?" Sally asked. "What's your name?"

"Nikós, your majesty." Nikós said, straightening up. "Tashistan is being overwhelmed by these… metal creatures."

"Metal creatures?" Sonic asked.

"Yes, your majesty." Nikós replied. "They all have a strange insignia engraved in them and they look kinda like you, king Sonic."

"You don't have to be so formal." Sonic muttered.

Sally subtly nudged Sonic.

Nikós pulled out a leather pouch and held it out to Sonic. "I carved a picture of it, your highness."

Sonic and Sally looked at the drawing.

It was a face with a mustache.

"I don't recognize it." Sonic said, taking the pouch from Nikós. He handed the pouch to Sally.

"We'll have to check with Queen Sonia and see if she knows anything about it." Sally replied.

Sonic nodded. "You do that, I'll talk to him."

Sally got up and walked away, to hers and Sonic's bedroom.

Sonic got up and stepped down from the throne's pedestal.

"So, Nikós." Sonic said. "Tell me about your family."

"My dad died before I was born." Nikós replied. "Ma told me to come here. I don't know if she's still alive. The metals were about to search the alley we were hiding in."

Sonic gently patted Nikós on the shoulder. "I'm sorry."

Nikós rubbed the back of his head. "Do you think we have a chance against the army?"

"The Master Emerald and the seven most powerful Chaos emeralds are in the Mobotropolis palace." Sonic said. "I think we have a great chance."

Nikós nodded. "I'm willing to serve in your army, your highness."

Sonic shook his head. "I appreciate your willingness, but Knuckles and I can handle it." He replied. "And you don't need to be so formal."

"Alright, anyway royalty is more valuable than I am." Nikós said.

Sonic sighed. "I can't let you go." He thought.

"Nothing you say will make me change my mind." Nikós continued. "I want to make sure Ma is okay."

Sally finally came back into the room. "Sonic?"

"Let me talk to her for a moment and I'll think about it." Sonic said. "You look hungry, kid. Bunnie will take you to the dining hall."

Bunnie walked over to Nikós. "You do look like you could use a good meal, Sugar hog." She said, taking Nikós' hand. "Come along, we'll have the chef make you whatever you want."

"Yes, ma'am." Nikós replied.

Bunnie led Nikós out of the room.

Sally held Sonic's hand.

"He never mentioned exactly who his parents are, but it does seem like Manic could be his dad." Sonic said, slumping his shoulders. "He wants to help us fight the metal creatures. I got Manic killed; the least I can do is keep his kid safe."

Sally gently squeezed his hand. "It wasn't your fault." She replied. "He chose to take an arrow for Sonia and there was nothing anyone could do to help him. If you hadn't gotten him to take the deal, he would've been executed for trespassing and robbing the palace. That's a no-exception law that I wasn't allowed to change at the time and I couldn't have pardoned him either."

"So what did Sonia say?" Sonic asked.

Sally sighed. "She didn't recognize the drawing, but Aleena saw the metals in Mobodoon." She replied. "She said Shadow the Hedgehog is leading them. He's a former echidna slave, set free after you defeated the tribe. He has been vocal about Aleena allowing Sonia to marry Knuckles and letting them take the throne in her place as she recovers from her illness. He stormed out of the coronation."

Sonic nodded. "I noticed Sleet and Dingo haven't been mentioned by anyone lately too." He said. "Go tell Sonia to have Knux and Tails meet me in Mobodoon. We'll investigate. I think we can take those three without an army."

Sally folded her arms. "You're still arrogant. You've learned nothing."

"I have." Sonic said, glaring at her. "I've learned I don't want to risk anyone's life for something I can do myself."

"You're risking Knuckles and Tails." Sally replied.

"He's naturally super powerful while our armies are not." Sonic said. "He's as stubborn as I am. Oh, and Tails is extremely smart and has an arsenal of Chaos Emeralds."

Sally smiled weakly. "Just be careful."

"Of course I will." Sonic said, hugging Sally.

Sonic headed to the armory and was about to pass Nikós in the hallway.

Nikós stopped, then turned around to follow Sonic. "Hey, you're going without me?"

"Yes." Sonic said.

Nikós picked up his pace and stepped in front of Sonic. "No. I told you that I am not taking no for an answer." He said. "Tell me why you don't want me to go with you."

Sonic sighed. "Because… I'm your uncle." He replied. "Manic is my little brother."

Nikós gasped. "What?"

Sonic dipped his chin to his chest. "He would've been executed for breaking into the royal palace if he hadn't taken the deal to go with me and Sonia to fight the echidnas." He said softly. "His armor got ripped in battle and he took an arrow for Sonia. That stupid arrow had to hit right in the hole."

Nikós wiped tears out of his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Nikós." Sonic continued. "I'm the one who offered him the deal. At the time, I didn't remember he was my brother. We were separated at three years old because of an echidna raid."

Nikós hugged Sonic. "I don't blame you, Uncle Sonic."

Sonic hugged Nikós. "Now, do you understand why I can't allow you to go." He said, letting Nikós go. "I owe it to your dad to keep you safe."

"I owe it to Ma to rescue her." Nikós replied. "I'm sure Shadow and the metals captured her."

"Nothing I can say will change your mind?" Sonic asked.

Nikós shook his head.

Sonic sighed. "Alright, but you do exactly what I tell you to do."

Nikós shook Sonic's hand. "Deal."

Sonic handed Nikós a set of black armor, which happened to be Manic's backup armor. "Here, this looks like it'll fit you." He said. "It was supposed to be your dad's."

Nikós grinned. "Thanks."

"You're welcome." Sonic replied.

Nikós' black shell necklace slipped out from under his shirt as he put on his armor.

"Jade's your mom?" Sonic asked.

Nikós froze. "You knew my mom?"

"Yeah." Sonic said. "I gave her your dad's necklace because I was sure he'd want her to have it. I didn't know anything about you until recently."

"It's okay; I'm sorry she didn't tell you." Nikós replied. "I think that was because we were shunned by family and society because Dad was a thief and Ma wasn't married to him. I have to steal to put food on the table."

Sonic shook his head. "I wouldn't have shunned you." He said. "You're family. You and your mom are welcome to stay here and serve in the palace."

Nikós grinned. "Thank you so much."

"You're welcome." Sonic said, putting on his armor. "Hurry up and get ready. I'll tell you some stories about your dad on the way."
