Sonic curled into a ball and threw himself at Knightshade.

Knightshade blocked Sonic with his sword, slicing Sonic's back and knocking him to the ground.

Sonic cried out in pain and uncurled. He noticed his fur slowly turning back to blue. "What?"

Knightshade stepped closer.

Sonic noticed and quickly rolled away as Knightshade plunged the sword into the ground, narrowly missing the hedgehog.

Sonic scrambled to his feet. "Sonia! Manic!"

Sonia noticed her armor had stopped shimmering and raced over to Sonic.

Manic thought he heard Sonic and glanced to see if something was behind his shoulder.

Knightshade rushed over to Manic and jabbed his sword at Manic's chest armor.

Manic jerked away and tried to attack Knightshade with his own sword.

Sonic ran over and pulled Manic away.

Manic noticed a huge gash in the armor and checked himself for injuries.

"Oh, that was close." Manic sighed in relief.

Tails looked around, trying to find the Master Emerald in the mayhem.

Aleena saw the battle starting to turn in favor of the echidnas through the portal mirror and transformed into her super form (where her fur and spines turned a light purple with gold sparkles; her eyes turned gold).

Aleena took a step toward the mirror as the mirror slowly began to fizzle out.

"No!" Aleena screamed. "Sonia!"

The mirror shut off.

Tails finally spotted Knuckles holding the Master Emerald, which was now glowing, then looked in the direction that Knuckles was facing.

"Sonic!" Tails cried.

Sonic blocked an attack from an echidna warrior and ran over to Tails. "What….?"

Tails pointed to Knuckles. "The Master Emerald works as a shut-off. That's why you're depowered."

Sonia and Manic ran over to Tails, which drew attention to the fox's little hiding spot.

The echidnas got ready to fire arrows at them.

Sonia ran over to Knuckles and fell to her knees. "Help us, please, Knuckles." She begged. "Now's your chance to make things right. I'll put in a good word for you in Mobotropolis. My mother is Queen Aleena."

Knuckles looked down at the Master Emerald, then to Sonia. He threw the emerald onto the ground.

Sonia shielded her eyes as the Master Emerald shattered, sending shards of the large emerald and the multi-colored Chaos Emeralds flying.

"Sonic!" Tails cried. "Those are more powerful!"

Sonic and Manic rushed over to Sonia.

Sonic quickly gathered the Chaos emeralds as Manic grabbed Sonia's and Knuckles' arms and ran for cover.

An echidna fired an arrow in Manic, Knuckles, and Sonia's direction.

Manic shoved Sonia out of the way and was struck by the arrow in the place where his armor was ripped open during the fight.

Manic's super transformation had completely faded away.

"Manic!" Sonia cried.

Sonic looked over at Manic and Sonia.

Sonia was cradling Manic, who was weakly holding her arm.

Manic weakly tried to stop the bleeding by pressing his hands over the wound.

Sonic looked down at the multicolored Chaos Emeralds in his hands.

The Chaos Emeralds began to glow again.

"This ends now." Sonic said, his fur turning a glittering gold. Lightning like streaks flashed on and around him

Sonic sent a blast of fire and electricity at Knightshade, disintegrating the super powered echidna.

Sonic fired a larger, more powerful blast of fire and electricity at the rest of the echidna tribe, scattering them.

Suddenly, Aleena (back in her super form) showed up in a flash of sparkling violet light and finished off the remaining echidnas with a blast of sparkling blast of electricity.

Sonic turned back to normal, then ran over to check on Sonia, Manic and Knuckles.

Knuckles was trying to bandage Manic's wound with an old scarf.

Someone, Sonic assumed it was Sonia, had broken most of the arrow off in an attempt to pull it out of Manic's chest.

Manic's breathing came out slow and labored.

Knuckles looked at Sonic and slowly shook his head.

Aleena, now depowered again, hurried over and gasped.

"Thanks for saving me, Manic." Sonia said, stroking Manic's spines.

"You're… welcome." Manic replied.

Sonic scooped Manic up and raced to Knothole, hoping the town doctor (his and Manic's Uncle Chuck) could save him.

Manic weakly held onto Sonic.

Sonic finally made it to Uncle Chuck's house in Knothole. "Uncle Chuck!" He screamed. "I-"

Uncle Chuck opened the door. "Sonic? What-"

"No time." Sonic said, carrying Manic inside. "He needs help."

Uncle Chuck shut the door behind them. "Lay him on the table."

Sonic laid Manic onto the table. "You'll be okay. I won't leave you." He said, holding Manic's hand. "I'm so sorry I got you into this."

Manic was barely breathing. He looked at Sonic; his eyes dull. "'S okay…. Love… you…."

"Love you too." Sonic said, gently squeezing Manic's hand. "You're gonna be alright. Just hold on."

Uncle Chuck walked over and checked Manic's injury.

Manic drew his last breath.

"No, no." Sonic said. He gently shook Manic's shoulder. "Wake up. Hang on, we-"

Uncle Chuck checked Manic's pulse. "He's gone, Sonny boy." He said sadly.

"Can't you revive him somehow?" Sonic asked. "Please? He's my little brother and we only reunited a couple of months ago."

Uncle Chuck sighed. "I'm sorry." He replied. "There's nothing I can do."

Sonic wiped tears out of his eyes. "I'm so sorry, Manic."

"I'm sorry this is how we meet, Manic." Uncle Chuck said, brushing Manic's spines out of his eyes.

Uncle Chuck gently took Sonic's arm and walked him away as the undertakers carried Manic's body (covered by a blanket) out.

Sonic furiously wiped tears out of his eyes as he never liked for anyone to see him cry.

Sonia, Queen Aleena, and Knuckles met Sonic and Uncle Chuck outside the house.

Sonia looked at the blanket Manic was under, then to Sonic, who was wearing Manic's necklace. "Is he-"

Sonic nodded.

Sonia started crying on Knuckles' shoulder. Queen Aleena hugged Sonia.

Sonic sat down on the street. "I never should've volunteered him for this." He said, fighting tears. "I shouldn't have left him in the forest either."

Uncle Chuck sat down beside Sonic and put his arm around his shoulder. "You didn't know that would happen."

"He wouldn't blame you." Sonia replied. "He died saving me. He didn't have to take an arrow for me."

Sonic stood up. "Uncle Chuck?" He asked. "Could you go talk with the mortician? I'll pay for his funeral. I have to do something real quick."

"Go ahead." Uncle Chuck replied.

Sonic raced off for Tashistan, using that opportunity to cry over his brother.

Sonic arrived in Tashistan and found Jade in the town square, buying a linen robe.

Jade grinned. "Sonic?" She asked. "I heard you all defeated the echidnas. Where's Manic?"

Sonic sighed. "He was killed in battle." He said. "I'm so sorry."

Jade started crying.

"He must've left quite an impression on you." Sonic said.

"He had been to Tashistan before." Jade said. "He was passing through, on his way to Knothole from Hamarapi, and saved me from a couple of creeps. But he stayed for quite a few days because of me."

"Do you want to go to his funeral?" Sonic asked. "Trust me, I can take you there and back here quickly."

Jade glanced back at her house. "Okay, just let me tell my family."

"Sure, I'll wait right here." Sonic replied.

Sonic brought Jade to the mortician's home and introduced her to Sonia and her mom, Uncle Chuck, and Knuckles.

"Jade, you can see Manic with Uncle Chuck." Sonic said. "We have to check in at the palace."

Jade nodded.

Sonic picked up Knuckles and Sonia before racing off to the palace.

Sonia, Sonic, and Knuckles arrived at the palace and bowed to Sally and her dad.

Sally and King Acorn got up.

"An echidna?" King Acorn asked.

"Knuckles is on our side, your majesty." Sonic said. "He helped us win the battle by shattering the Master Emerald."

Sally looked them over. "Where's Manic?"

Sonic grimaced, tears forming in his eyes.

"He sacrificed himself to save Sonia." Knuckles said sadly.

"He's also Sonic's long lost brother." Sonia added.

Sally looked to her dad, who nodded.

"We'll pay for his funeral." Sally said. "It's the least we can do for someone who was brave enough to fight the echidnas."

Sonic, Sonia, and Knuckles went to Manic's funeral in Mobodoon along with Princess Sally and her dad, Uncle Chuck, and Jade. Queen Aleena would've come to the funeral, but she had urgent matters to attend to in Mobotropolis.

Sally held Sonic's hand as they walked out to the cemetery for Manic's graveside service.

Sonic walked over to Jade, who was still at Manic's grave.

"Would you like me to take you home now?" Sonic asked.

Jade turned to face him. "I suppose so. I'm sure my family's worried about me."

Sonic picked Jade up and raced back to Tashistan. He sat her down at the town's gate.

"Thank you, Sonic." Jade said.

Sonic handed Jade the necklace Manic had. "It's Manic's. I think he'd want you to have it."

"Thanks." Jade said, putting the necklace on.

"You're welcome." Sonic replied. He raced back to Knothole, but not before buying a diamond ring for Sally.
