Chapter 4--Into The Rabbit Hole

"Let's do this thang!" Siruis shouted, mirroring Sonic's enthusiasm. "Alright, so how do we get

into the hole?"

Apparently, no one had thought about this yet. It was a pretty good question. After all, how do

you safely and quickly go straight down into a dark void that goes hundreds of miles straight down, almost

to the center of the Earth? "uh..."s and "hmm..."s were heard from everyone for several minutes, when...

"Duh!" Shadow exclaimed, hitting himself on the head. "We can use the chaos control! Why

didn't I think of it before?" Shadow was acting completely out of character. Everyone stared at him,

shocked at his sudden change of attitude. "What?" the confused hedgehog asked.

"Nothing," Sonic replied, chuckling. "It sounds like a good idea to me."

"How can you laugh at a time like this?" An angry Eggman yelled. "In case you haven't noticed,

this whole planet is going to explode in a matter of hours!"

"Relax, we have until tomorrow, egghead!" Sonic responded, annoyed. "But we should get

moving, I'm getting bored."

"All right, then..." Shadow takes the chaos emeralds from Knuckles "...CHAOS CONTROL!!!"

With that, the whole group disappeared in a flash of light. Flying down the hole at warp speed

was overwhelming for some, intense for most, and thrilling for all. Shadow was used to it, but he had never

gone this far before. It took them almost a minute to get to the bottom of the hole. They looked around, it

was nearly pitch black in the large room that they had landed in. Under layers of dust and decay, a few of

the monitors that still worked were on, providing the only light in the room. Tails went up to them, and

wiped the dust away from one. His eyes widened when he saw the message "DESTRUCT SEQUENCE

ACTIVATED: 22:19:48:37" After figuring out why the numbers were going down, he figured out that it

was an 'hours : minutes : seconds : milliseconds' timer and then realized that it was counting down to the

detonation of the bomb. He told everyone else about it. Siruis walked up to the control panel beneath the

monitor.

"Maybe I can disable the bomb from here." Siruis was about to reach for the panel, when a laser

shot from somewhere in the darkness in the back of the room destroyed the console.

Almost immediately, the room was flooded with dim red light from the ceiling as a computer voice

very loudly said, "Security Breach! Security Breach! All units report to sector B-7!"

The group looked around in shock. "What did you do??!" Knuckles shouted at Siruis.

"Nothing! Before I could do anything, something blew up the control panel, and then all this

started!" A very upset Siruis shouted back.

Suddenly, doors on all sides of what was now revealed to be a huge hexagonal room flew open,

and armed robots entered the room. They began shooting at everyone. Sonic and Shadow went to work,

destroying a few of the robots. Knuckles went Mike Tyson on a few of the unfortunate machines. Rouge

pulled a pistol from the holster of one of her boots and began shooting at what looked like the heads of

some of the robots. Eggman also pulled out his blaster (the same one he took Amy hostage with back on

the ARK) and began to put holes through a few more robots. Siruis provided cover for Amy and Tails with

the blasters on the gauntlet-like battle armor on his arms. he was mowing robots down, one after another.

Apparently realizing him as a threat, the majority of the robots began firing at Siruis, who engaged the

deflection shield that was part of his armor. It protected him, but Tails and Amy were still very vulnerable.

"AAAaahhhh-haaah-haaahhh-ahhh" Amy screamed/cried as several shots whizzed past her head.

She and Tails had taken cover between Siruis and the wall. The robots weren't exactly crack-shots, so they

missed a lot, causing much unnecessary crossfire. Siruis grew worried about the defenseless creatures

behind him, and tried to make his shield take al the hits. Unfortunately, his fears were confirmed when a

shot grazed Tails's arm, causing him to howl out in pain. No sooner had he been shot then a grayish-white

flash came out of nowhere and carried him off to wherever it had came from.

"TAILS!!" Siruis and Amy screamed in unison. Everyone else was too busy fighting to even

notice what had happened. In a fit of rage, Siruis rapid-fired his blasters across the swarm of robots, taking

down most of them.

All of a sudden, the computer voice came back: "Threat level analyzed. Move to containment

level 3. All guard units retreat. Standby to activate secondary emergency defenses." With that, all of the

robots that could still move went back into their doors, which closed tightly. The digital voice then

announced: "All active units clear. Activate secondary emergency defense mechanisms."

The group looked around, exhausted and confused. they could hear a deep, rumbling sound.

"What's that noise?" Knuckles asked.

"Hey, Where's Tails?" Sonic wanted to know.

"I don't know. Tails was here, got shot, and the next thing I know, he's gone." Siruis replied.

"I saw something take him; I think." Amy said, cautiously.

"What was it?" Sonic asked. He sounded desperate.

"I don't know. It was moving so fast, it was all a grayish-white blur. It was gone before I saw that

it took Tails."

"Tails...Where are you, buddy?" Sonic asked. He had fallen to his knees. His eyes watered as he

thought: >Could Tails be.........NO!...He's alive...He must be...Somewhere.<

"Sonic?..." Shadow came up to the blue hedgehog. "Believe me, I know what it's like to lose

someone you care for." He said as he thought of Maria. He understood the pain. Yet, somehow, he felt

hope--for the first time in years--hope. He knew that they would find Sonic's semi-adopted brother and best

friend.

Shadow was about to say something else, but before he could, Rouge announced, "Hey, I think I

found the source of that noise!" Everyone--well most everyone; Sonic didn't move--looked over at Rouge

who was staring at her feet. They were wet, and seeing this, everyone else looked down to see that the

room now had several inches of water in it, and it was rising. Until now, Sonic had been too distraught to

notice, but he stood back up saw that all of maybe 50 or so small holes in the wall were gushing out water.

Siruis looked at everyone and, in a worried tone, said, "Guys, I think we'd better get outta here!"

He then located a ventilation duct on the wall. "Time to use an old cliché escape route," he said to himself.

He blasted off the panel, firing a shot into each screw. The panel hit the floor with a sploosh-clang

noise that got everyone's attention. Climbing into the conveniently large duct, He signaled the others to

follow him. They did, and by the time they had all climbed about halfway through the duct, they heard a

far-off computer voice say: "Activate hydro-electric defense mechanism." They heard the sound of

electricity surge through the water, destroying all of the consoles and monitors; some of which exploded,

while others simply fizzled out.

"Whew! That was too close" Knuckles exclaimed. Somehow, the water had not made it up to the

vent, providing a safe place for the team.

"Tails..." Sonic said quietly to himself.

Amy managed to go over to Sonic, or at least somewhere near him--it was dark in the vent--and, in

a consoling voice, said, "Sonic, don't worry. We'll find him. I'm sure he's okay"

"If that little fox was able to beat me, he must be tough." Eggman said, in a gruff tone.

Seeing an opportunity, Knuckles sarcastically said, "I don't know, Doc. Beating you isn't exactly

saying much." The echidna burst out laughing, while a large, disgruntled Eggman fumed in the darkness,

mumbling something. Hearing this only made Knuckles laugh harder, even though it wasn't that funny.

Rouge broke in, saying: "Would you two stop it? Can't you see that Sonic's depressed? Shame

on both of you."

"I've been depressed this whole time, and no one else seemed to care. That doesn't sound very fair

to me...Not that I care, or anything." Shadow said to the group, which couldn't tell if he was joking, or being

serious, or something else all together.

Seeing that he needed to put a stop to this, Siruis very sternly said, "Okay, that's enough from all

of you. Knuckles, stop making fun of Eggman, it's not his fault."

"Hey!" Eggman said.

Ignoring this, Siruis continued: "Shadow, we might feel bad for you if we knew why you were

depressed. And Sonic, I'm sorry about Tails, but I have a feeling that Amy and Rouge are right. We'll get

Tails back, but right now we need you to focus on the task at hand. We've still got to do something about

this bomb. Now, come on."

After searching around for an hour of so, the group finally found a way out of the air duct.

Unfortunately, even after all that searching, they had only found their way down one floor. It was another

large room. This time, the lights were already on. dim as they were, they still seemed too bright after

crawling around in near solid darkness, seeing only what could be illuminated by the flashlights on Siruis's

armor.

"This place gives me the creeps" Amy said.

"Why didn't I think of any of these traps before?" Eggman said to himself.

Shadow looked around and said, "This place is pretty big. I wonder what they use this room for?"

A few seconds passed as the team climbed out of the air duct. Then, an all-to-familiar voice came

from an image on the monitors near the ceiling. It was Professor Gerald Robotnik.

"It would seem that the computer has found intruders in this room, and therefore activated this

program. Whoever you are, you have invaded, and will now be destroyed. Prepare to face one of the

deadliest machines that I have ever devised."

Siruis said, "Seeing that Professor again can only mean one thing--trouble!"
