Chapter 6--Wait A Second, What?

Time Until Detonation: 18 hours 47 minutes 56 seconds

They had been walking for hours. Most of it was trying to keep Knuckles on his feet. The dart

had been pretty potent, but it seemed like it was finally wearing off. The stairwell they were in seemed to go

nowhere. It was poorly lit, so the gang had to carefully find their way around. Everyone was tired, and poor

Sonic was sore from his injuries.

"I'm hungry...Anyone got any food?" Amy whined.

"Yeah, let me just grab some thin air, here, and I'll whip you up a five-course meal!" Knuckles

responded, annoyed. He was still in a bad mood thanks to Siruis. Amy's complaints weren't helping.

"How long have we been in here?" Rouge asked, not to any one person in particular.

"Trust me, you don't wanna know." Siruis replied.

"You've been quiet for a while. What are you up to Siruis?" A suspicious Eggman asked.

"Tetris." Siruis said. "You think this visor's just for seeing through?" He added, pointing at his

head. "It really passes the time."

"Is there anything that armor of yours can't do?" Shadow asked, barely audible.

Siruis thought for a moment, and answered, "It can't make cheese."

Shadow rolled his eyes. "Hey, Sonic, how're you holding up? You got pretty beat up back there."

"Don't remind me. The pain does a pretty good job of doing that by itself." Sonic replied.

Eggman nearly dozed off leaning against the wall while walking. Then, something bumped his arm.

He looked down, and saw a control panel. "Hey, take a look at this." Everyone walked up to him.

"Can you eat it?" Amy asked.

"Does it stop pain?" Sonic wanted to know.

"Is it more fun than Tetris?" Siruis inquired.

Eggman answered: "Don't be ridiculous. Nothing's more fun than Tetris. It's a control panel;

which means there should be a door nearby." He pressed a few keys, and a door opened on the inner side

of the curving stairwell-turned-hallway.

"Finally!" Knuckles breathed a sigh of relief.

They all entered the door, which closed behind them. This made them all a little nervous.

"I've got a bad feeling about this..." Rouge said quietly.

The group found themselves in yet another circular room. This one was barely lit, and

considerably smaller than the others. In the middle, a clear glass tube stretched from the ceiling to the floor.

Inside it, a certain orange fox stood, unmoving. He stared at Sonic and the others, but said nothing.

"Tails!!" Sonic shouted as he and the others ran up to the tube, and gathered in front of the two-

tailed fox. With his hands on the glass, Sonic continued: "Tails! I can't believe it's you!...What happened

to you?...How'd you get...here?"

For a moment, Tails said nothing. He just stared at Sonic and said, in a strange voice that was not

his own,: "I assume you are referring to the fox that was analyzed. This is merely a hologram constructed to

appear as your associate. I believe it will be easier for you to understand your fate if it is told to you by

someone that you know. I am not Tails."

As the hologram was saying this, Sonic had backed away from the tube, in disbelief.

"No...It...It...can't be..." The blue hedgehog was in shock.

Ignoring this, the hologram continued: "You will all be destroyed. The bomb has been activated,

and cannot be stopped. I will ensure that it detonates properly, and on time. Unlike the professor's ultimate

life form, I will not fail him. I am a machine. Perfect in every way. You are doomed to failure in your mission

to stop me." The image of Tails's head turned slowly, as if to scan the group that stood in front of it.

Shadow stood next to Sonic, trying to snap him out of his trance-like state. holo-Tails stared at them. "You

are project Shadow, result version 2.7, are you not?"

Shadow looked at the projection, and said, "What are you talking about? Project Shadow was that

giant lizard, and we destroyed it." He then thought to himself, >At least... I think that was project

Shadow...< Shadow then asked, "And what do you mean by 'result version 2.4' anyway?"

The hologram then answered: "I assume that you are referring to Project Shadow: result version

1.0. It was called 'Biolizard', and was the only successful prototype created before the professor's death.

Afterwards, professor Robotnik's colleagues began to secretly experiment with other animals. They did so

here, in this very facility. They had to be well hidden, especially after the shutdown of ARK, 50 years ago.

Some basic successes with failed prototype version 2.4 prompted further experiments on the mammal

commonly known as the hedgehog. Similar mammals were also altered. All were listed as failures. The last

recorded version entry before the economical collapse of this facility was Project Shadow: result number 3.0

Records indicate that the failed experiments were given false memories, and placed in various random

locations. Project Shadow has been officially classified as a failure, due to lack of control over the results.

All results had something to do with the chaos emeralds, which were originally created as power sources for

the failed life forms. When a result grew too strong, The scientists created the master emerald as a way of

removing the power from the chaos emeralds, thus keeping the projects under control. The biolizard was

the only success, as it did not have a free will of its own. It never disobeyed orders, and was thus stored

away for future use and study. Scans confirm that all but one of the living failed results are in this room.

The location of the other one is unknown, however its DNA has been detected in a blood spill on the top

floor of this complex. Result version number 3.0 was recorded as having been a blue hedgehog capable of

great speed. Being the last one, it was the most powerful of the failures."

Everyone stared in disbelief. The computer had just told them that they were all failed experiments

of project Shadow. (With the exception of Eggman and Siruis, of course.)

Sonic then said, "So...I guess that would make version three the ultimate life form, right?"

The hologram paused for a moment, and replied: "One could consider it to be that way, I

suppose."

Upon hearing this, Sonic then thought: >A blue hedgehog capable of great speed...sounds like

me. But...does that mean that...I'm the ultimate life form?< He immediately asked, "I'm the only blue

hedgehog here, and I can outrun anybody. So, am I result three, or what?!"

The hologram stared at him, and then responded: "Scans confirm that you are result number 3.0.

As you say, you are the ultimate life form."

Siruis thought to himself: >Something's not right here. Amongst other things, why does this

machine keep referring to itself as 'I'? And why is it explaining all that stuff?<

Eggman looked around, and asked, "Why are you telling us all this? It doesn't make sense."

The hologram smirked and said, "Two reasons...one: to stall for time. And two: so you wouldn't

notice the electrical stun guns that have extended from the ceiling and are aimed directly at you."

Before anyone could react, the weapons fired, and everyone was knocked out.

Fitting chapter name, eh?

There is an interesting thing I discovered on which I based a good chunk of this story. In SA2, and

SA2: B, if you dodge the biolizard's attacks during the "FINALHAZARD" battle, and don't attack it, you can hear some pretty neat radio messages; one of which is that Shadow mentions that Sonic might be the ultimate life form. You might have to fight (or rather, not fight) the last battle a few times before you hear it, but eventually you will. just switch places with the other hedgehog when you need to stay in the battle without attacking. For those that don't know how, you switch by flying above or below the lizard, and going past it.
