Actually, this fic has been on FF.net since January of '03. It is mine, but I can't remember my FF.net login, so I'm re-posting it here. ^^ Hope everyone likes it!

Disclaimer: I unfortunately do not own Sonic the Hedgehog, or any of its characters. If I
did, I’d be a very rich girl.

Endless Waltz
------------------------

The mystic sound reverberates off the walls as I watch her. She moves like an
angel within a sea of color; easily spotted in her pale lilac gown. To the mist that is
music, I wish to join her in an endless waltz, but it is forbidden for me to be seen by
outsiders. I am a mutate; An experiment gone wrong. I have been out cast, thrown
aside, by the ripples of unfamiliarity and misunderstanding.

I feel so alone up here in the darkened overlook that is the balcony. I lean over the
cast iron railing staring at the dance floor graced with her presence and belaiden with
outsiders I do not recognize. I have caught her attention-- completely by accident on my
behalf-- as she spins away from the human she is dancing with. Though there is a distance
between us, I can still read her gentle face as she glances at me. She feels guilty about
leaving me alone up here to watch.

The music stops, cascading the dancers in a fall of silence. And beautiful Maria,
my Maria, smiles to the human she had been dancing with before leaving his side. I can
sense that she will be coming for me. The Professor does too, and he glares a warning at
me from his place on the dance floor below. This is my cue to sonter back into the
shadows I blend so well with. I hear Maria coming up the stairs now, and I am afraid. I
do not wish for her to get into trouble with her grandfather, the Professor.

Maria joins me in the shadows of the balcony as the next song begins to play. I
catch my breath at the sight of her. She is beautiful. Her usually cascading blonde hair is
done up in a way I have never seen before, and her deep blue eyes shine like stars behind
the make-up she wears. She smiles her warm and comforting smile before extending her
hand to me.

"May I have the honor of having this dance?" she asks, her misty voice barely
above a whisper. I move my dumb lips to answer, but the sound is caught in my throat, so
I am forced to nod. Maria laughs softly and takes me by the hand into the lighter part of
the balcony.

She positions my black arms so that my hands are placed properly: one on her hip,
the other in hers. She then-- leaning forward-- places her other hand on my shoulder. I feel
uncomfortable making her stoop down to my height, so I make my air shoes kick in. This
surprises her and she smiles as I come to the right height for her.

I have never danced before. Maria knows this, so she leads. I follow, trying to
imitate her movements. We spin around on the small balcony and I feel like I am in
heaven. I smile; a rare occasion for me.

The song ends too quickly for my taste, and Maria senses my disappointment. She
continues with the dance even as I stare in horror at the Professor as he slumps out of the
shadows. My air shoes immediately cut off and I drop to the floor quickly, yet silently. I
stare at the ground in shame. I have disobeyed the Professor. Maria turns to look behind
her and I can tell she regrets her action in doing so. She may love her grandfather dearly,
but she hates to disappoint him. She releases my hand and looks at the ground.

The Professor orders me away. Not wanting to enrage him further, I bid Maria a
good night and quickly and silently leave the ballroom. I sonter to the forth floor laboratory
that serves as my room. I snuggle up to the pillow on my bed-- a small cot in the dark
corner of the room-- and close my eyes. Tonight I will dream of endless waltzes amungst
the stars.
