Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ I’m not your mom ❯ Short story ( Chapter 1 )

[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Surge poured coffee into her cup and scrolled through her phone.

“Babe?” Manic called. “Can you bring me my coffee?”

 Surge huffed. “Again?” She thought.

 “Babe?” Manic called.

“Are your legs broken?” Surge called. “Get your own coffee?”

Manic finally shuffled in. He gave Surge a puzzled look. “But you’re not doing anything.”

“Neither were you.” Surge replied. “Were you gonna rot in bed all day instead of joining us for breakfast?”

Manic groaned. “It’s Saturday. I worked all day yesterday and I wasn’t ready to get up.”

 “So did I.” Surge retorted.

“You were home all day.” Manic said, pouring himself coffee.

“I did the laundry, cleaned the house, and took care of Hip.” Surge replied. She glanced at the door. “I’m not officially his mom yet and I don’t mind, but it is a full time job.”

“Yeah, but I worked, then came home and cooked dinner.” Manic said, crossing his arms.

“We had two full boxes of leftovers that you hadn’t touched.” Surge replied.

“I didn’t want that.” Manic protested.

“So?” Surge asked. “Neither did I, but I’m not wasting food. I’m not adding to the leftovers. Are you that spoiled?”

Manic narrowed his eyes. “Hey, I am not spoiled.” He replied. “I was in foster care too, so I-”

“But you lived with your Ma longer and she got you back.” Surge said. “I aged out. That’s not even the point.”

 Manic scoffed. “Whatever.”

Surge huffed. “Yeah. Whatever.” She muttered. “I’ll be back later. I gotta get some air.”

Surge grabbed her phone and coffee cup. “Love you.”

 “Love you too.” Manic replied.

Surge left the house, texting Sally and Sonia about meeting them to talk.

Once Sonia invited Surge and Sally to her place, Surge ran for Sonia and Shadow’s house.

“So that’s what happened.” Surge said.

“Oh, Sonic kinda did that before.” Sally muttered. “But he got sheepish and apologized later after Aleena talked to him, I guess. Then he actually did the work to grow and change.”

“Shadow never did anything like that.” Sonia said. “We divide the house work sorta equally. I take care of the indoor house work and he does the outside, but we help each other with either of it whenever we need it. We cook together and eat leftovers throughout the week. He barely lets me take care of him when he’s sick.”

 “Lucky.” Surge and Sally replied.

“I don’t get Manic.” Surge said. “I love him, but he turned into a big baby once we married. Does he think he can get away with it?”

 Sonia and Sally shrugged.

Shadow walked out of the storage shed.

“Did Aleena raise him that way?” Surge asked.

“Oh, heck no.” Sonia replied. “She made Manic do his own laundry and wash dishes as soon as he could do it himself.”

“But I guess she didn’t make them eat leftovers.” Shadow said.

 “Oh, her too?” Surge asked.

“Mother made us eat leftovers.” Sonia replied. “I dunno, we didn’t always want leftovers and I guess we thought we could get away with not touching any when we grew up and got out on our own.”

Sonia took Shadow’s hand. “We had a good talk about it and made adjustments.”

“Should I tell Aleena what Manic is doing?” Surge asked.

 “Hmm, yeah.” Sonia replied.

Shadow and Sally nodded in agreement.

“Alright, thanks.” Surge said, getting up. “See you at the cookout next week.”

Surge left the house and texted Aleena to let her know she was coming over as she walked to her house.

The next day, Surge and Aleena stood in the kitchen while Hip colored in his coloring book at the table.

“Babe?” Manic asked. “Can you bring me my phone and coffee?”

 “Are you sick?” Surge asked.

Manic groaned. “Again with this?” He asked. “C’mon, you’re already up.”

Aleena seethed. “Manic Edsel Hedgehog, get your tail in here now.”

 Hip laughed.

Manic walked in, wide eyed. “Ma?”

“You are not a baby and she’s not your mother.” Aleena said. “I didn’t wait on you hand and foot and I am your mother. She works as hard as you do. It won’t kill you to eat leftovers.”

 Manic hung his head.

“Now, I don’t mean to embarrass you.” Aleena said.

“No, you’re right.” Manic replied. “I’m so sorry, babe. That was lazy of me.”

 “I forgive you.” Surge said.

Manic hugged Surge. “I love you.” He said. “You worked hard too, you deserve a treat. You want to go out for breakfast?”

Hip looked up. “Can I go?”

“You can stay with me and I’ll teach you to make animal shaped pancakes.” Aleena said.

 “Babe?” Manic asked.

 “Yeah, sounds good.” Surge replied.

“Have fun, you two.” Aleena said.

Manic and Surge changed clothes, then left the house.
