Sonic Series Fan Fiction ❯ Sonic Underground 90s AU ❯ Flea Market ( Chapter 14 )
The hedgehog family walked to the car.
“Why do we have to get up early to go to the flea market?” Sonic asked.
“Because it doesn’t stay open long.” Aleena said. “We didn’t get up that early.”
Manic hopped into his car seat and drummed his fingers on his car seat as he waited on Aleena to buckle him in.
“You really love those fries, huh?” Aleena asked.
“They’re the best.” Manic replied.
The rest of the family got into the car.
“I don’t like the flea market.” Sonic said. “I wind up smelling like cigarettes every time we go.”
Brenden started the car. “Yeah, that’s the one thing I don’t like about it too.” He replied. He backed the car out of the garage and drove away.
*
Manic held onto Aleena’s hand tightly as they walked through the crowds in one of the outdoor aisles. He brushed into her to avoid being pushed out of the way by a grown man. “Ma?”
Aleena picked up Manic. “Oh, you’re heavy.”
“Sonic, slow down.” Brenden said.
Sonic walked slowly. “But this is boring.”
“We’re not bored.” Brenden said. “Be patient, Sonic.”
The family reached the live animal section.
Manic nearly jumped out of Aleena’s arms as a rooster crowed. “What’s that?”
“That’s a rooster.” Aleena said, trying not to laugh.
“They’re that loud?” Manic asked.
“They’re nature’s alarm clocks.” Aleena replied.
“I see why clocks were invented.” Manic muttered.
Brenden and Aleena laughed.
“Aww, look at the baby goat.” Sonia said, pointing at the baby goat in the stall. “Can we get one? Please?”
“No, we don’t have room for one.” Brenden said.
“What about a puppy?” Sonic asked.
“We’ll see.” Aleena said. “If we get a puppy, it’ll be from a shelter.”
“Can we go to one now?” Sonic asked.
“Wait until we get Manic his fries and we might go look at dogs.” Aleena replied.
*
Sonia frowned. “They didn’t have any toys this time.”
“Maybe next time.” Aleena said.
The family stepped up to the little food stand.
Aleena glanced at Sonic and Sonia. “Do you want anything?” She asked. “You know Manic won’t give you a bite.”
“Why can’t you make him share?” Sonic asked.
“Because your mother won’t share her fries with me.” Brenden said.
“Because you’d eat all of them.” Aleena replied.
“Stand aside.” Brenden said.
Aleena walked the kids to the other side of the window.
Manic looked at a nearby table and pointed. “Look at that giant Bugs Bunny plushie.”
Sonic raced over, then raced back. “He’s just five dollars.”
“Please, Ma?” Manic asked.
“We have more than five dollars put together.” Sonia replied.
Brenden stepped over and handed Manic his fries.
“Dad, can we get that giant Bugs Bunny?” Sonic asked. “He’s five dollars.”
“He’s bigger than you.” Brenden said.
“Please, Daddy?” Sonia asked.
“Fine, but you three are using your allowance to get him.” Brenden replied.
Aleena gave Brenden a look as they walked to the table.
*
Aleena carried the giant Bugs Bunny to the car as Brenden carried Manic.
A male cat glanced at Aleena. “It’s not Easter.” He said as he walked by.
Aleena sighed. “At least it wasn’t ‘what’s up, doc?’ for the thousandth time.”
“Dad, I’m hot.” Manic whined.
Brenden looked at Manic. “Your little face is red.” He said sadly. He gave Manic his water. “There, we’ll cool you down in a minute.”
The family reached the car.
Aleena stuffed the Bugs Bunny plushie into the car’s trunk as Brenden got the kids in.
Brenden and Aleena got into the car.
Brenden started the car.
“Ma?” Manic asked.
“Hold on.” Aleena replied. She turned on the air.
No cold air came out.
“Roll the windows down.” Brenden said, rolling his window down.
Aleena and the kids rolled the windows down.
Brenden eased the car out of the parking lot. “We’ll be on the highway in a minute.”
Sonia fanned Manic with her paper fan.
Brenden pulled the car out of the lot and drove down the highway.
The breeze picked up.
“That’s better.” Manic said, grinning.
Aleena glanced back at Manic. “Let me know if you feel sick, okay?”
“Okay.” Manic replied.
“Can we go to McDonald’s and get grilled cheese?” Sonia asked. “Please?”
“They don’t have that at McDonald’s.” Aleena said.
“Yes, they do.” Brenden replied. “I got her one the other day when she went to the grocery store with me.”
“Well, what do you want to do?” Aleena asked.
“Not today, Sonia.” Brenden replied. “I’ll make you one at home.”
“Okay.” Sonia said.
“Besides, I gotta fix the air conditioner before I take you and the kids anywhere.” Brenden said.
“Now you’re concerned about my comfort.” Aleena muttered.
“What does that mean?” Brenden asked.
“Why did you let them get that?” Aleena asked.
“It’s a great deal.” Brenden replied. “Besides, it’s kinda cool.”
Aleena leaned on the door. “You didn’t have to carry that thing around.”
“I’m sorry, Babe.” Brenden said. “I only let you carry him because he’s lighter.”
“Well, I appreciate that, I guess.” Aleena replied.
*
Brenden and Aleena got the kids out of the car.
A small dog barked.
Aleena looked around as Brenden got the plushie out of the trunk. “Where’s that coming from?”
A little brown puppy shuffled out from one of the shrubs in front of the house. He kept his head down and his tail low, but wagging, as he approached Sonic.
Sonic petted the puppy’s head before Aleena could stop him. “Aww, hey there.”
The puppy wagged his tail.
“At least he’s friendly.” Brenden said.
“Can we keep him please?” Sonic asked. “He doesn’t have a collar.”
“We’ll feed him and walk him.” Manic said.
“And bathe him.” Sonia added.
“He’s technically a rescue.” Brenden said.
“Okay, but he’s the family puppy.” Aleena said. “We all do our part to care for him.”
The triplets agreed.
“C’mon, Muttski.” Sonic said, petting the puppy. “Let’s get you inside.”
Brenden led the family up the walkway.
Muttski trotted alongside Sonic.
Brenden let Aleena, the triplets, and Muttski inside. “I’ll be right back.” He said, handing the plushie to Aleena. “I’ll go to Walmart and pick up a few things.”
Brenden kissed Aleena. “Love you.”
“Love you too.” Aleena replied. “Be careful.”
Brenden left the house.
Aleena shut the door behind him. She set the plushie on the couch and followed the kids into the kitchen.
The triplets sat on the floor and petted their new puppy.
Aleena got the puppy some water, then sat down with her kids. “He is pretty cute, isn’t he?”
“Where’s Dad?” Manic asked.
“Getting things for Muttski.” Aleena replied. “He’ll be home soon.”
Muttski fell asleep on Sonic’s lap.
Sonic petted Muttski’s back. “Thanks, Mom.”
Manic and Sonia hugged Aleena. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.” Aleena replied.
