In the kingdom of Mobotropolis, Sonic (the oldest of the royal triplets) raced through the palace’s famous Hanging Gardens to pick flowers as a gift for his mom Queen Aleena.

 Sonic climbed back through the window of the palace, where his younger siblings Sonia and Manic were drawing in their playroom floor.

 “Mother and Longclaw said we’re not supposed to go out.” Sonia scolded. “The bad guys are out there.”

 “Ah, they can’t catch me.” Sonic said, waving away her concerns. “I’m the fastest thing alive.”

 Sonic held up flowers. “I picked these for Mom.”

 An arrow flew through the window and landed in the wall.

 Sonia screamed.

 Longclaw and Aleena rushed into the room.

 Longclaw shielded the royal family as Aleena scooped up the triplets.

 An arrow pierced Longclaw’s side.

 “Longclaw!” Sonic cried.

 Manic and Sonia sobbed hysterically.

 Aleena ran out of the room with her triplets clinging to her. She made it to their emergency shelter and shut the door. She pulled three small bags out of a cabinet and handed a bag to each triplet. “Just in case you need to escape elsewhere.” She said, fighting back tears. “Don’t waste them and try to stay where I send you for at least a week.”

 The triplets nodded.

 Aleena put the triplets’ backpacks on their little shoulders and their medallions around their necks.

 “Where are we going, Ma?” Manic asked. “Aren’t you coming with us?”

 “I’ll do my best to join you, my little angels.” Aleena said, voice shaking. “But I have to help our citizens, okay? I just want you to be safe. I love you.”

 The triplets hugged their mom. “Love you too.”

 Aleena pulled a ring out of another bag on the counter and tossed it into the air. 

 A portal to some forest opened up.

 Aleena nudged the children through the portal as the echidna army started to beat down the door. She pressed her back against the door as her children stepped through the portal.

 “Mom!” Sonic cried as he heard the commotion on the other side of the portal.

 The portal closed before he could step through it again.

 Sonia started crying harder while Manic was in shock.

 Sonic hugged his siblings and led them away. He found a little underground cavern and decided it would be a great place to spend the night.

 The triplets sat on the floor of the cavern.

 “It’s my fault.” Sonic said. “I shouldn’t have gone out to the garden.”

 “You were only in the garden?” Manic asked. “Ma said it was safe to go out there, but you were supposed to ask if you could.”

 “I know, I just wanted to surprise Mom with flowers for Mother’s Day.” Sonic replied.

 “Then it wasn’t your fault.” Sonia said. “Sounds like no one knew the echidnas were around.”

 “Maybe Ma will come to stay with us or take us home.” Manic said. He looked around. “We can fix up the place while we wait for her.”
