[ P - Pre-Teen ]

Tom, carrying Manic, hurried to the house along with Sonic and Sonia.

Maddie opened the door. “How’d you get here so quickly?”

“No time to explain that.” Tom said, walking to the kitchen. “Can you help him?”

Maddie followed Tom, Sonic, and Sonia into the kitchen.

Tom laid Manic on the counter.

Maddie gasped. “Oh, poor baby.” She said softly as she checked Manic’s injuries. “I don’t have any way to treat him here.”

Sonia handed Maddie a ring. “Then use this to get him to your office.”

“Please help our little brother.” Sonic said.

 “Of course.” Maddie said.

“You and Tom can go with Maddie, sis.” Sonic said. “I got this. I can’t let anyone else get hurt because of me. Besides, Manic needs you.”

Maddie looked at Tom. “Stay with him, Sonia can go with me.”

 Sonia picked up Manic.

“So Sonic got super speed and you got super strength?” Tom asked.

“Yeah, hard to say what Manic has.” Sonia replied. “Okay, Maddie, just say or think of where you want to go and toss it.”

Maddie tossed the ring. She stepped through the portal with Sonia as soon as it opened up.

“Now how are we getting those rings?” Sonic asked.

“Does Manic have rings?” Tom asked.

“Yeah, why?” Sonic asked. He smacked his hand over his face.

“It’s fine.” Tom said, leading Sonic out of the house. “It’s hard to think clearly when a psycho scientist is trying to kill you.”

Tom and Sonic got back into the truck.

Sonic crossed his legs. “Okay, so why don’t you grab your bags while I go and get my rings?” He asked. “I’ll meet you back in Green Hills.”

“Okay, but you need to get some shoes.” Tom replied. He handed Sonic some money. “I think you can get in and out without being seen.”

“Thanks.” Sonic said, stuffing the money into his hoodie pocket. He pulled Manic’s ring bag out of his backpack. He pulled one ring out and stuck it on his finger. “You take the rest. I only need one in case of an emergency.”

 “Be careful.” Tom replied.

Sonic started climbing out the window. “Heh. No promises.” He said. He raced off.

Sonic ran through a shoe store and quickly tried on every pair in his size. He finally settled on a pair of red and white slide-on sneakers, placed the money on the counter, and ran off. “Keep the change.” He called over his shoulder. He ran all the way to and up the Transamerica building and grabbed his rings. “This was too easy.”

Robotnik’s aircraft and drones eased behind him.

Sonic sighed. “Spoke too soon.” He said, turning around. “Don’t you have better things to do? Like maybe do something about that mustache?”

“How dare you insult my beautiful mustache, you overgrown porcupine.” Robotnik said.

“I’m a hedgehog, Ro-butt-nik.” Sonic retorted. “Kinda sad you don’t know your spiny mammals, doc.”

“It’s gonna be sad when your freaky little friends go to your funeral.” Robotnik said. He fired missiles at Sonic.

Sonic dodged a couple, then grabbed two and flung them at the drones.

“I’d be livid if I actually paid for those.” Robotnik said.

Sonic raced down the side of the building.

The airship and drones easily kept up with Sonic as he dodged the drones’ lasers as well as traffic.

“How is he doing that?” Sonic asked. “Wait….”

Sonic jumped onto a car, then turned and leaped onto a drone. He hopped across the drones to the airship. He looked in the console and saw his, Sonia, and Manic’s spines in capsules hooked to the console. “I knew it!”

“Did you know about this?” Robotnik asked as he pushed a button.

The windshield wiper smacked Sonic off the ship and onto a nearby mattress in the bed of a truck.

“That was convenient.” Sonic said, getting up. He raced off to Green Hills.

Robotnik turned the airship around and followed Sonic.
