'The single most amazing thing about people, I believe, is the fact they can ask why?'

Qustions that pass my mind.
By:pan-pan

Damn..
What was he thinking?
I can't think of any reason that he would do this.
Was it anger?
Jealousy,
or was it the fact he wanted to be needed. But wasn't?
It was a week after things had settled down and I had just gotten a few things in my head straightened out.
"Mr. Vash! Are you going to come down for breakfast?"
The sound of Millie pulled me away from where my mind was.
"Oh course." I said smiling, "I'll be down in a minute or so."
"Alrighty then. I'll see you downstairs."
The click of the door and I was alone in thought once more.
I thought back.. Back to when all of this had happened.....before Millie, before Meril, before Rem even......?
There was a consciousness, I could tell what I was, and who I was, I knew someone was besides me.
"Vash?"
"Hmm?"
"Do you see that ahead?"
"A ship?"
"Yes, let's go with them."
"What?"
"Have some fun and meet people."
"Fine."
The next thing we knew we were on a ship.
Some people wanted to kill us, but then another wanted to save us.
And she did.
This person? Rem.
Growing, changing, we matured to quickly for their tastes.
Knives said they were afraid, and that we should be in charge. I didn't know why. They seemed alright to me, especially Rem.
I don't think knives liked it. After all, he said that he would watch me...
Fast forward, through the landing past the fight that caused us to split.
I remember, walking there in the desert and then falling on the ground, from tire, fromexhaustion, from just no longer caring.
I thought, maybe I could end it there, but I couldn't. I continued on.
A bit further, only to fall once more.
"That's it." I remembered croaking, "I quit."
I had stared into the gray skies as they turned to night.
"You can quit yet."
I turned my head.
"You can't quit."
"But I have nothing left."
The shape of Knives appeared.
"I'll protect you."
"But you want to kill me!"
"No, only to see the light. Come with me."
"I"m sorry. I can't."
"That's alright. I'll try later."
I remember the shape fading, and I seemed to black out then.
I woke up later in a saloon..... someone had saved me.
"Vash! Get down here this instant or I'll eat your pancakes!" Meril shouted.
"Oh coming!"
I jumped out the door and down the steps to the breakfast that awaited me there.
The talk was light and loose.
Now that Knives wound was healing and after having talked with him, he almost seemed like a good person, almost....
I looked at him a moment and noticed, he still looked a lot like he did when he was a child.
It cause a memory I hadn't thought about click into motion.
We had just gotten used to earth and had found ourselves in a town.
Knives stared at a stand that sold bread hungrily.
"How much money do we have left?"
"Enough for a loaf and a half. After that we have to work."
"Fine, hand me the money, let's at least enjoy what we can before the humans force us into labor."
I stared at him.
"They won't force us!" I had exclaimed.
"Really now?"
"I..they..." I had stopped and handed him the money.
He went and bought a loaf and a half.
He came back and tossed me the whole loaf only taking the smaller one.
"You should take the larger piece since you're youngest." he had muttered.
I only stared at him.
He hated the humans,
and yet though he was cold he had given me the better half.
I stared at the bread, as though it were a symbol..
"Vash..are you going to eat that?"
I glanced up from the pancakes.
"Oh, go ahead Knives, I'm full. I gotta get some work done. I'll see y`all later."
As I walked out the door Knives turned to Meril.
"Was he always like this?"
"No, actually, he's normally rather annoyingly cheerful. He seems deep in thought today." Meril
"Would someone pas the syrup?"
"My goodness Millie, how can you eat that?" Meril asked.
"Give her a break, she's eaten for two." Knives said protecting her.
"Thank you Mr. Knives!"
They started laughing over nothing.
The laughter reached my ears from outside.
It hurt.
It wasn't as though I didn't like it, but, it only triggered memories.
I could only remember him laughing at causing others pain.
"Now we have enough Vash. Now we can some decent clothes for ourselves!"
I had only stared at him.
"But you stole that money from them!"
"Look, it's a rough world and it's overrun by nothing but idiots nowadays. Do you want us to starve and die?"
I stared at him.
I didn't. So I had followed.
I had been bought simple, but new clothes that were more than my share of the money.
Knives only bought himself a plain simple used outfit with a hole in the shoulder.
"You can have mine instead."
"No I don't need it."
I sighed.
Somehow, I still wondered what he had been doing.
But what hurt worse was when I had decided to leave him for good and not come back.
"What? I've taken care of you! You need me! You can't leave! Into that world of humans? Are you insane?"
Knives had exploded.
A fight had ensued, me barely getting away.
I remember the next time I had seen him, he had been with Legato.
Legato....
Legato....
Had he taken Legato because of the fact that he had no one to care for?
"Hey, Vash. Can I talk to you?"
Knives sat down next to me.
"How did you find me?"
"We're brothers. Plus the fact your jackets hanging over the roof."
"Oh." I said, laughing to myself, "So, what did you want?"
"I was wondering, is something bothering you?"
"I want to ask you a question. When did you get Legato?"
Knives thought a moment.
"Possibly a week after you left, not too long. Why?"
"I was just thinking."
"Not too hard, you don't wanna blow something." he teased.
"See, I'm starting to wonder if maybe it was Legato."
"What?"
"If Legato did this. When you were with me, you just couldn't stand humans, but then after I left, and you found Legato, you started wishing to destroy humans. Then you actually started it.
He died and you seemed to lose it. And now.... and now.... you seem like your old self somewhat."
I sighed.
"Well, I don't know. the man was a strange one, he had the ability to do as he wished, and make people do things. Who knows, maybe he had control of me the whole time when you were gone. I'm just glad that it's over if he did." Knives said, following a bird as it flew.
"Knives, why did you want me to stay?"
It was silent, Knives thinking of how to answer and me waiting for it.
"Because, I wasn't ready to be on my own like you were. I still needed someone to watch me." he said, he looked at the clock.
"Let's go get some donuts. I'll buy." Knives said hopping down.
So that was it.
Was it really that he needed me and not the other way around?
Did he know deep down that if I left, he might make a mistake?
And was it possible, that somehow, in some strange way, Legato could have been the reason for all this?
That he had found Knives even before Knives had found himself?
The questions buzzed about in wish to be answered.
"Are you coming or not?" He asked.
I smiled.
I guess they'd have to be answered later.
All I knew know was that we were going to have to make up for a lot of lost time.

END.....
